In my opinion the problem is very simple: it doesn't feel organic
It doesn't feel at all like a Sportscast.
An example last night was Cesaro's return. Let's pretend it was a basketball game. It's two minutes left in the game and suddenly a player that was out for the season suddenly takes off his suit, revealing he's dressed for the game and checks in. A sports announcer would make it feel like "a real moment in history". Cole and JBL make it feel like "Ah hey it's that guy again". There's no surprise in their voice. No shock. Just canned bullshit responses.

Imagine a show where you're building up to a climax, then suddenly a guy who was put in hospital in episode 2 of the season shows up to face the bad guys. Is there any show where they'd just go "Oh, he's back, cool" and move on?

I think Cole did a good work. JBL needs to be fired though, and I was a fan of his commentary in 2006.
Heel Lawler and Mauro were awesome though.

I actually cant remember hearing a single word they said on commentary on Sunday.
I've magically trained myself to block out the annoying sound of todays commentators. Plus I was concentrating on the baseball at the same time so that helped drown out the clowns on commentary.

Right; it's like they've internalized all the ridiculous tropes that pro wrestling has built up over the past 20 years, so anything seemingly "shocking" that would happen is just "hey, here's a thing that happens a lot, so who cares!"

Cole is/was fine, Jibbles is terrible and Byron is a bottom five commentator of all time.
