that will cause the PS3 to automatically brick itself on January 1, 2018?
In exchange, current PS3 owners would get unlimited games/network access, and maybe other stuff, for free. And when the system bricks itself, it could be traded in for X amount off a new PS4.
This would help people upgrade to the PS4 without screwing them over.

f*** that noise. I have a PS3 and PS4. PS3 has FFVII. Not the shitty PC port that the 4 does.

No! Even old consoles are being played today.
Bricking all systems would suck big time.

Why are there always really terrible console questions around here?
"Should/will Nintendo only develop software?"
"No."
"Should Sony brick everyone's PS3s?"
"No."
"Okay, but should Nintendo go only software?"

Seeing as I have no intention of ever buying a PS4 even if my PS3 broke down, I'mma say f*** no. I'm pretty much out of the console world nowadays anyhow, nearly all the gaming I do now is either on the Internet or on my iPad.

Also, I think if they did that, they'd probably get sued.

What if the bricking date was put out to January 1, 2030, and instead of free, it becomes a 20% discount instead?

What if the bricking date was put out to January 1, 2030, and instead of free, it becomes a 20% discount instead? If a console is designed to brick itself at all, it's not getting bought. Period.

There is no way that this wouldn't lead to a class action law suit so large Sony would pull out of video games.

I somehow don't think bricked consoles would get you a lot of trade-in money. I mean, I traded in a perfectly fine Xbox once and got $40. You're saying if I permanently disabled it, I'd have gotten more?
