I'm sorry, but I'm one of those that like keeping the characters just the way they are. Do you object to productions of Shakespeare's plays with non-white cast members? For me, whatever a characters origins are is what they should stay. If a character is white, they stay white. If they're black, they stay black, Asian, Spanish, etc. And why is this thrown out as if this is only white people being upset about race? When they made the Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds African American people were complaining that they had switched the Green Lantern from black to white not knowing that there were multiple Green Lanterns and that Reynolds was playing Hal Jordan and not the African American John Stewart.

Here they have a chance to make an original character that could have legitimately added a minority character to the Spider-Man mythos... and they f***ed it up. And now we have to hear the inevitable cries of bigot from the loud Twitter types whenever anyone raises an eyebrow. I really shouldn't be surprised.

My biggest problem with the whole Human Torch debacle was always Fox/Marvel/whomever getting in my face screaming at me that I was a hate filled bigot nerd racist and that Micheal B. Jordan was going to be the black Human Torch whether I liked it or not. When I asked who they were going to cast as his sister, the black Invisible woman, the studio made up some dumbass pointless story about adoption or some bull crap for no reason. Johnny and Sue Storm are blood brother and sister. If we wanted diversity, making them both black would have been an excellent step in the right direction. For whatever reason, the studio chickened out doing that and made themselves look like hypocrites, assholes, and even a little like racists themselves. To be fair, how many adopted brother-sister superhero teams can you name with motion pictures? Professor X and Mystique in First Class. Thor and Loki(Sister in comics at least). In TV we have The Flash and Iris West. Not too many Brother/Sisters anyhow. Only others I can think of are Flash and Scarlet Witch.

Woke up to the expected kind of news about this...people on reddit claiming it's false, Dan Slott making a spectacle of himself on Twitter regarding it, anti-MJ fans bemoaning the decision and demanding Felicia appear instead.
Usual cup of joe.

If her hair is red, sure why not I guess? If they take away MJ's defining physical feature, I'm calling bullshit. She can pull it off. Another picture of her with red hair

I don't care if this actress plays her, I don't know enough about her to comment.
I HAVE heard rumors she's going to play MJ as a shy nerd which I really don't like. MJ is a super confident firebrand of a woman. THAT'S the MJ I want. Nervous, goofy Spidey contrasted by this ultra confident woman around him.

MJ was pretty much a nerd in the Ultimate Spider-Man comics, and later on in the run (shortly after Peter dated Gwen), Bendis made her really nerdy, with glasses and everything. She kind of went back to her old look when Peter came back to life and they eloped though. I heard this movie is very heavily influenced by USM and the Spidey Loves MJ comics (where she and Peter fell in love as study buddies)

This is Spideys 3rd go round and MJs 2nd (3rd if you count her getting cut out of Amazing) do something different with the casting, works for me.
Still wish we were getting Miles Morales though, maybe a few movies down the line

Can we just get a Spider-man movie that doesn't involve Peter Parker's soap opera romance nonsense.
Just for two hours have him try to get a good photo for a young photographer Daily Bugle competition while fighting Vulture and Shocker who are trying to rob every jewellery store in Manhattan.

Her dying her hair might make this easier to accept, but MJ should NOT be a nerd. She's supposed to be a model, not just the most popular girl in school. I really hope they reject that characterization.

Nick Fury, Deadshot, Johnny Storm, now Mary Jane.
I think we need to make Luke Cage white to really even things up.

{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}She's playin MJ comicsalliance.com/zendayas-secret-spider-man-role-revealed/I don't know enough about her as an actress to speak on if she's suitable for the role, so guess we'll have to see. I'd like to think there won't be any weird backlash, but given the whole Michael B. Jordan as Human Torch thing of just last year.. well.. For whatever reason, the studio chickened out doing that and made themselves look like hypocrites, assholes, and even a little like racists themselves. I didn't have any problem with Kingpin, Heimdall, Ben Urich, Harvey Dent, soon Valkyrie, and now Mary Jane Waton being portrayed by black actors. I just don't like studios, social justice warriors, and critics lumping "all nerds" or "all comic book fans" into one big "racisisisisisisisisist" stereotype. I realize there are racist assholes out there, but don't assume all of us are just like them. Just my personal opinion, but I'd rather have "black Mary Jane" or "black Kingpin" over Mary Sue token "Miles Morales" any day of the week. I can't wait until the day when we're no longer bothered by these changes. I don't think everyone who objects to characters being altered is some kind of bigot. But those kinds of people DO exist, and I wish the decent people who have issues with these changes would still try to be understanding and supporting of them, for no other reason that visibility is important. Go ahead and brand me an "SJW " all you want. I'm all for this.

Hmm, wonder if it means we'll get their interpretation of Gwen.

Still wish we were getting Miles Morales though, maybe a few movies down the line Given how they introduce Rhodey and later Sam Wilson, I was hoping that would be the path that they'd introduce Miles into the MCU as well. Nick Fury, Deadshot, Johnny Storm, now Mary Jane. I think we need to make Luke Cage white to really even things up. Seeing how the MCU has been around for going on 10 years now and we're only just now getting a PoC led work, that argument doesn't exactly work.

Eh, few people voiced any problems with Marisa Tomei being Peter's aunt, despite Aunt May not being Italian-American (maiden name is Reilly) and typically older than fifty-one.

Marvel's usually good at casting so if they think Zendaya can be a good MJ, I'll trust them. Just hope they let her dye her hair red. This. I don't care about race or whatever, just make her have her red hair. And if she is playing her as a ratty nerd, that's kinda weird, considering the whole dynamic is that Peter's punching above his weight because he's a massive nerd and she's a hot popular gal. EDIT: Okay, now I do have a problem with the dude from Grand Budapest Hotel being Flash Thompson. Unless he's massively bulked up since then, he's like, the least bully looking person ever. Like, Peter should just be able to push him over and walk away if he kicks off. He's gonna have to pull off some amazing shit to be believable.
