As a fan of a terrible team (Da Bears) That hasn't been in the playoff in six years I really have no interest other in a new team holding the Lombardi Trophy. That being said when do you think the Pats hatred took off in earnest?

I may be too far in the New England forest to see the trees, but here's my best guess:
The origins of 'hatred' was the 3rd Super Bowl win, because fans hate when one team wins too much, and I would understand if someone says Tom Brady has a slappable face. Then it became full-on white hot hatred when Spygate hit.

For me it started with the Tuck rule. Patriots should have never been in that Super Bowl to begin with. As for the majority, I would say after the second title.

After the second Super Bowl title, it began and it just snowballed from there.

The Tuck Rule pissed off a lot of people. Despite being big underdogs against the Rams, the Pats didn't get a lot of love going into the Super Bowl.

The Tuck Rule pissed off a lot of people. Despite being big underdogs against the Rams, the Pats didn't get a lot of love going into the Super Bowl. Yeah, that plays into it. The rumors about the taping of the Rams practice really did not help. I started actively rooting against the team around that time (while still respecting Kraft himself just fine). Despite that, I did not develop a personal dislike for Tom Brady until his douchetastic behavior regarding Deflategate.

I don't hate em; but rooting for them now is like rooting for William Zabka in the Karate Kid etc.
I recognize their greatness even though I don't want to see them win anymore.
It's like, Tom Brady is the GOAT now. I don't know what argument you'd even make that he isn't given SEVEN Superbowl berths. But I'm not a fan even as I respect him.

I didn't like them but up until Spygate I was talking about how Brady was the best QB in the league. That changed my viewpoint (I'm a Rams fan mind you). I stone cold hated them the last 10 years since but I respect what they do and never underestimate them.
Hell our game this year against them was a moral victory to me.

The year they beat the Eagles. Obviously, it was rough on a Philly fan but the whole story was the classy Patriots against the brash asshole team from Philly...and those bastards would taunt after every big play. To this day whenever I see Tedy Bruschi on TV, I tell it to f*** off.

In addition, It would be a cute little story if the Patriots won the Super Bowl after 9/11 and all that. But then those f***s kept on winning, Belichick got more douchey, Brady got a lot more smug, the Red Sox, Celtics and even the Bruins bloomed, winning championships in their field, Boston sports fans got more sanctimonious, and 15 years later, you now see the malignant pile of filth that they are now. Hated or otherwise, their greatness is respected rather than discredited.

I've hated the Pats my entire life. No ill regard to them or their fans, but I've just always hated them. I hated that they couldn't just be called the Boston Patriots, but I also just hated the name 'Patriots' in general for having what I consider a condescending name, afterall my mom was the one who said, "Hmmm, Patriots...how could you root against a team that's patriotic?"
The real frustration for me is when they beat the Rams, something that just never sat right with me, and for good reason. The fact that they continue to be good year after year is annoying as well, as I do like when we have teams not qualify for the playoffs from time to time. It's the same with the Spurs...that dread that they may once again win another championship.
My reasons may be petty, but they're my reasons.

As a fan of a terrible team (Da Bears) That hasn't been in the playoff in six years I really have no interest other in a new team holding the Lombardi Trophy. That being said when do you think the Pats hatred took off in earnest? Jordan Howard is one hell of a running back and if The Bears are able to get a good QB, they might win the division next season. This is coming from a Vikings fan. To answer your question, I think either after their 3rd Super Bowl win or after deflationgate. When they won the 3rd Super Bowl in four years they became the Yankees and Lakers of the NFL. The team that always wins and your favorite team has to wait yet another season to win the big one. Spygate and then deflationgate made people think that the Patriots are cheaters and the only reason why they won so many championships was because they cheated. I personally like the Patriots, because every sports league should have an evil empire team.
