Anyone here play? I just started getting serious about it in the last few months and ordered cards for my swamp/mountain deck a few days ago. Here's what the deck will look like: deckstats.net/decks/92688/804879-judge-frollo-s-hellfireObviously, I have to improve my sideboard but I want to test out my main deck first at the card shop near me.

I loved this game back from Ancient Empires to right after Mirage launched. Green decks were my favorite.

I'm currently on a long hiatus from the game. last time I was hardcore into it was Innistrad, mostly because I loved the Hammer Horror feel. I'm sure something will pull me back in eventually.

I have a very large collection of magic cards since getting into the game back in the mid-90s from way back when Ice Age and Fourth Edition were the main sets. I mostly play with my friends running a cube for drafting. Which you can read about here: Oldhammer40kquest.blogspot.co.uk/2016/12/magic-gathering-cube.htmlThe actual cube I currently use is here www.cubetutor.com/viewcube/54129Wasn't terribly interested in Amonkhet or Hour of Devestation but Ixilan looks cool with the tropical island, pirates and dinosaur theme.

I'm the reverse. Amonkhet and Hour helped build my first deck but Ixalan so far doesn't seem to have anything that would help me. Deadeye Tracker has an interesting ability but being a 1/1, I really don't have any use for it.

I'd like to get into it but it seems like an expensive hobby and I don't really know anyone who plays it

Does that site help you with building a cube? I have an idea that I saw in a video and want to try for laughs... a cube of the worst cards in existence.

I played from when Arabian night's came out until not long after the release of Stronghold. Got to expensive to have to rebuild a deck every 4 months when stuff cycled out of being Type 2 legal.
Still got 3 decks built.
All white, lots of protection from black or red, lots of shadow and armageddons. Red direct damage with quick black creatures. Old school blue/white millstone control deck.
Got most of my old prosbloom deck from back when everyone played Necro.

This is pretty good: magic.wizards.com/en/new-to-magicOtherwise, going to the store and asking people before the event is good too. That's how I learned.

Not really, it's more a way of holding and keeping track of your cube. Help on building cube's depends on what you want from your cube with your friends. Mine is themed around a run through of magic history, focus on multiplayer and is very casual. This is a handy start point: legitmtg.com/cube-building-101/

The MTGsalvation forums are the best magic the gathering resource on the net no matter what kind of magic you play. So if you want Tournament tips, Commander deck building, draft theory or just ideas for a casual centaur tribal deck it's the place to look first. The best card database IMO is magiccards.info/ it has a great advanced search tool. The Tolarian Community on youtube is good for mtg focused videos: try this for starting magic www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzSz5RJ6gu0

Thanks to all the people who posted helpful links in this thread. I was looking to get into Magic a few years back, so someone gave me some stuff...but I just couldn't figure out how to play. At all. Felt dumb. Still feel dumb.
I'm going to give understanding it another try. I just have one dumb question for now...
I know that there are different editions and expansions and whatnot, but...can you use any cards from any edition together or against others? Or do you have to play a certain edition against the same edition?

If you want to play casual then there shouldn't be any restrictions to what card sets you are using... at our local nerd club we use cards from Unglued and Unhinged. If you want to play in any kind of tournament setting, then you'll need to find what sets you can use.

Or do you have to play a certain edition against the same edition? There's a bunch of different ways to play but the three main for tournaments are: Standard: What I play. You can use the current 8 (soon to be 9) sets: Iaxalan (Coming soon.) Hour of Devestation Amonkhet Aether Revolt Kaladesh Eldritch Moon Shadows over Innistrad Oath of the Gatewatch Battle for Zandikar Once Rivals of Iaxalan comes out, Gatewatch and Zandikar are ineligible for Standard. Also next year, they will be going to a new model (One core set and 3 expansions instead of two "blocks." Modern is more expanded. I believe it's basically all decks of the last 10 or so years minus the usual stuff that is banned. Vintage is pretty much any card from any set. Obviously this is the one that requires a lot of investment for a good deck. Certain cards are only allowed one copy because of their strength (like the infamous black lotus which lets you add 3 mana for no cost.)

I've never played, but watched an interesting documentary about it on Netflix, and read an article on cracked about a guy that would make counterfeit cards. All very interesting.

In terms of playing, make sure you understand the basic mechanics, card types, and the turn phases. You'll get the hang of it as you play.
Essentially, you are trying to generate mana and draw cards in order to cast your spells to advance a winning strategy. You win by reducing your opponent to zero life, decking them so that they cannot draw a card from their library when they are required to, or fulfilling a condition on the field like the enchantment Coalition Victory.
Oh, as far as cards from different expansions working together, the only things that truly differ are general card layout, the degree of explanation (newer cards generally explain abilities in detail), and common creature abilities getting official names, like fear.

I haven't been into the game since the Onslaught block. Didn't really like the Mirrodin sets and while some sets came out since that piqued my interest like Cold Snap, Planar Chaos, and Ravnica, I was never able to get back into it.
Still got a shoebox filled with cards, though. Think the oldest I have is either from Fallen Empires or 4th Edition. Might have a Revised in there, too. I might have a The Dark or Legends card or two, but I can't remember.
