I agree with hating things/fandoms purely because of the things they like is lame. There's a lot of things I don't care for, but if you do like it, good on you. My problem with fandoms is more with behavior within them more than anything. Lots of groupthink and ostracizing if you don't have the right opinions on certain ships or characters or episodes. There are also scumbags and outright dangerous people who lurk in the darker corners of some fandoms. How the communities handle such people goes a long way to shape my opinion of them. All of that is true, there can be dark aspects with any fandom. But I blame the root cause of that on the moral failings of people, not so much the works/IPs that spawned the fanbases. And like Eunos said, there's also positive aspects to take from them, like making friends and finding an accepting community. Groupthink can spoil that, but no collective is immune to that. Ask the corporate world.

I think that this might be relevant to the discussion, but can some of us agree the "sportsball" is a really dumb f***ing word?
When I see this word I think "Jeez did someone call you a nerd in high school and you won't let it go."
I was a theater nerd in high school. I always had my nose in a book. Yesterday I purchased 3 tickets for me and my two buddies to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
I have over 200 movies and over 100 books in my collection and I have watched every single movie and I have read every single book.
Yeah, I can say that I am pretty damn nerdy. And I love football! I'm devout Michigan State and Detroit Lions fan. You see you can like both "nerdy" and "non-nerdy" things and if hate the fact that their are people that like to watch football instead of anime or vise a versa: You are a asshole. Simply put. Let people enjoy the things that they like.

Agreed. Let's take the MLP fandom for example. I think that's a big enough fandom where it's hard to paint everyone by the same brush.
I like the little corner of the MLP fandom based here because I think our little group really embraces the core messages and values of the show. And I love that members of the fandom are actual parents who watch the show with their kids, and that it has universal appeal in the sense that it's something fathers and daughters can watch and bond over.
And then you have the many sleazy parts of the fandom, which I don't want to elaborate on. They're only a small part of the fandom, I reckon, but theirp presence has gotten infamous enough where it's tainted the fandom's reputation as a whole. And because the fandom itself is really decentralized by this point, there hasn't really been any effort to drum them out.

I think people who proudly boast how they don't watch a popular show or aren't into a particular movie franchise are the coolest people in the world Agreed. It’s one thing to be ignorant about something (even purposely so), but it’s a whole different ball game to boast about it. Until a couple of days ago I had no idea what Rick and Morty was. It doesn’t look like something that would particularly interest me, so I won’t be checking it out. That doesn’t make me cool or “better” than anybody.

Sadly a few bad apples in various fandoms spoils it all for some people. For example back in the mid 90s I got ostracized from the local anime fandom. All because I prefer Robotech to the three Japanese shows that it was made from.
Or how about back when Rhino released TF GEN 1 to DVD. I bought it and discovered the show didn't hold up that well for me. I was at a con digging thru DVDs. The guy next to me,who I didn't know, saw the Rhino TF DVD set. "Have you seen it?" He asked me. "Yea I bought it a few weeks ago. The show isn't that good. I guess I was letting nostalgia color my memories of it." The guy shook his head then said "Transformers is the best cartoon ever you better leave or I am going to punch you." I thought he was joking, then looked at him closer. He was turning red and he had his fists balled up. I walked away shaking my head and trying not to laugh.
But really in fandoms for every person that makes the fandom look bad there is 5 great people that make the fandom look great.

I think the impetus behind "sportsball" has less to do with the divide between nerdy & non-nerdy and more as a reaction to the implication that EVERYONE should be into pro sports of some kind. There can be a....certain level of disbelief/side-eye thrown towards people who don't. Anytime there's something like that - whether it be sports, superheroes, some tv show - people generally get a little incredulous and naturally there's going to be a reaction to that. but yes, it is an amazingly silly word that I wish could be un-invented.

I just don't like fandoms, I'm sorry. I don't agree with bashing them on YouTube or anywhere else though, I hate that kind of online bullying 'cringe' subculture.
ok nvm I evidently misunderstand the term

It's a classic example of collectivism. It gives the person slandering a fandom unearned self esteem.

It lets me know I’m the problem for not being interested in your stupid thing.

I don't bash entire fandoms but I will gladly mock the small minority of obsessive, creepy fanatics. especially when they do things like this:

I welcome to be proven wrong, but I can see Cuphead becoming the next franchise to get the "Toxic" labelled fandom.

I confess that I used to despise certain fandoms, and still hold hard feelings against one or two to this day. I remember back in the day, when MLP was THE hottest thing ever, non MLP threads would get buried in a matter of seconds by thread after thread after thread talking about MLP. Well, the mods on this board kinda put their foot down on that, and things are far better now. I don't hold any grudge against bronies or general MLP fans at all anymore. DBZ though, man, that's an easy fandom to hate. I just about dare any one to find a "who would win in a fight" thread or youtube vid, or whatever where some asshat isn't replying "GOKU COULD BEAT THESE GUYS!" even if absolutely no DBZ related character is involved in the battle. I know it's dumb in and of itself to argue over who would win in fictional character fights, but I just can't tell you guys how much it grinds my gears when these sorts of DBZ fans butt in and sabotage/take over what is other wise an interesting/fun argument. The DBZ fans on here are awesome and keep to themselves, and don't pull that kind of crap, but man, it does annoy me in other places.
I'll also say that I think it's okay to express your dislike of a fandom when the question is posed: "I THINK STEVEN UNIVERSE IS THE GREATEST SHOW EVER MADE BY MAN, WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?" "Meh, don't care for it." That sort of thing should catch anyone any grief, as long as they don't become jerks about it.
At the end of the day, all complaints aside, yeah, it's not nice to just hate on a fandom to be "edgy" or "cool" or to get a rise out of fans. You're just being a dick when you do stuff like that. Just leave people alone, you know?

I'm a lil bit of everything:
I'm the guy that says "I've never seen GOT"
I'm the guy that questions and laughs and mocks certain aspects of certain fandoms.
And I'm also the impassioned fan part of certain fandoms like Star Wars, wrestling, movies.
It's ok. You can take part in all. And if you love something so much, you shouldn't give a f*** what anyone says about it, positive or negative.

Like I said, people should just be left alone, if they're not hurting anyone. I'm aware that fandoms can become toxic, but that's steering the subject away from what I meant it to be about, which was people who take a fandom's notoriety as an excuse to bully others.

My take is that obnoxious fans of anything are obnoxious. However they never represent all fans of whatever it is.

Mockery is fine with me. To give or to receive. If people had mocked me and my Gilfriend while we were waiting for TFA for hours and she was dressed as an ewok, we'd laugh too. Cause all fandoms (even sports) are a lil silly and ridiculous . And if it's mean hearted, f*** em. As long as there's no violence, sticks and stones.

While I will never understand certain fandoms (looking at you, Bronies), I've never really cared. I have my own fandoms that most people don't get, so I understand them on that base level. I'll tease my friends and stuff, but that's usually it...
...And then Rick and Morty came along.
I am SO f***ing tired of being told "Oh, you just don't get it" or "You just need to see (insert unimportant random episode)" or "You just hate it because it's popular" or the million other things I have heard from these f***ing people. I have literally had people insult me personally simply because I don't like that show.
Now let me make this clear: I NEVER belittled these people for liking the show. Not one time did I make a snide remark about them or the show. The only thing I am guilty of is saying "I don't like the show, I don't watch it."
Which leads to that mock look of disbelief/disgust, followed by the inevitable variation of "Why?!", and me explaining every reason I don't like it (just to be clear, it's mainly Rick because he annoys me in every way and the whole constant burping thing is f***ing gross and unnecessary). And then it's some weird combination of them trying to convince me that I'm wrong while subtly insulting me for my opinion and talking down to me.
Sure, I've seen people like that in all fandoms, but Rick and Morty fans are the absolute WORST. Obviously I know not all the fans of the show are like that, but my personal experience has lead me to believe that the majority of them are. It has honestly driven me so crazy that if the show comes up in conversation, I walk away because I already know how it is going to end.
I have no problem with someone liking a thing. I'm not here to yuck anybody's yum. But on behalf of those of us who don't like your thing, leave us the f*** alone about it. And stop harassing McDonald's employees over a f***ing sauce you probably never knew existed before you heard about it on a god damn cartoon but suddenly can't live without.
