Specifically? Yes, it is. There is not need, nominally, to bash anyone for what they like. Or even that it applies here, as it really doesn't. However, on the broad concept of fandom, and it's inherent implications? Ehhhhhhhhhh... Let me preface what comes next: As a general rule I, and most people, don't have an issue with the thing other people likes. Barring the whole caveat of 'unless it harms others.' However, that doesn't mean I feel the concept and behavior behind fandoms, writ large, are entirely positive. Point of fact they are the inherent source of the problem of fandoms. Let's start with Fanatic. See the Merriam-Webster dictionary definition: "marked by excessive enthusiasm and often intense uncritical devotion"The reason this is important was because 'fan' as a word/concept is derived from 'fanatic,' as such carried a negative connotation. Of course, this was co-opted by 'fans' a positive euphemism for themselves. However, by making the word their own, it doesn't eliminate that the initial behavior that drove people to see parallels between fan, or then nascent fandom, behavior and outright fanaticism of different stripes. The reason for this is that second part of the definition: uncritical devotion. This is not non-criticism of the object, this is non-criticism of the devotion towards the object. I.e. the emotional investment, and the investment of identity, and the self in the object. That is the problem. Not that someone likes a thing. But the extent of how much one projects themselves into the thing. When perceived slights, or attacks, against the thing carry equitable weight, as an actual personal attack. But, at the same token, this investment, this personalization, is what makes fandom do good things. People involved become part of a greater thing, or perceived greater thing, and that inspires, and spurs them on. However, this is the same impulse that is darker. The same mechanism that inspires negative things as well. Because sometimes we haven't learned, or cultivated, internalized parts of our personality. That we only can relate other human beings based on pop culture, or topical things. Regardless of the why, it is that devotion that is the problem, as much as it is a boon. It's where the involvement with, and the relationship to, the object of the fandom matters. Are you someone who happens to be a fan? Or a fan of 'x' who is named 'y'. I am not saying abandon your shipping, or whatever, what I am saying is engage in some self-examination, and examination with what you are geeking out over.

Agreed. Hating on things people like is a stupid and juvenile thing to do. I totally agree with this because I have seen it happen far too often. When watching YouTube videos or when i've gone to read wrestling writeups on various websites I often see comments from people who HATE wrestling. For some reason they feel the need tell us wrestling fans that its "fake." Or they say other derogatory things like these guys should grow up and stop pretending to fight. I cannot understand why they can't just let people enjoy what they want to enjoy. And as for going out of their way to look for wrestling posts just so they can trash wrestling or wrestling fans how boring must their lives be if they have to resort to doing that just to amuse themselves.

I think the problem occurs when people become ridiculous about fandom. Case in point the Rick and Morty McD's situation. People acting like idiots because stores didn't get some sauce they don't even know what tastes like. Going in tirades I. Store and online swearing st people and basically making an asss of themselves. I feel like when you reach that level of ignorance you invite people to bash you and your fandom. It all goes back to if you don't want to be made fun of don't do something that makes you look like an idiot. Yeah, you can be a fan of stuff; we all are fans of something/s, but when that your entire life starts centering around what you're a fan of, sending you into actual rages/depression when things don't go like YOU think they should, it's probably time to take a step back and reappraise your priorities in life.

Nothing makes me laugh harder than non-wrestling fans who tell the actual fans the thing they watch is fake. Good news is it gives me an excuse to turn the Sarcasm meter up to 11.

Just ignore it.
I like Strictly Come Dancing. There might be people out there who hate it, and bash SCD fans, but I wouldn't know, because I don't read what those shitters have to say.

Aside from Miles Morales, I never liked Marvel's choices. Female Thor, Female Iron Man, Captain Marvel... But, going back to an earlier topic, I don't think I can ignore something. I'm a reactionary person by nature. I'll never insult your intelligence, but I'll happily insult the show. Sometimes you need to have the other side present, to show the Internet that its not a circle jerk. Because sometimes fandom's become echo chambers, and that's when crap goes down. Why does it have to be about "circle jerking "? I don't understand how when I tried to make a thread about people unfairly picking on people for being in certain fandoms, the subject automatically went to fanbases that can't police themselves. We're all aware that fandoms can become toxic, but I don't see that as an excuse not to be nice to people even if they're part of one. Maybe I haven't run into enough obnoxious fans in my lifetime. But I've had far more experiences where I've either been called awful names merely for mentioning my interests to them, or where I've seen others get attacked and labeled as a weirdo or loser because they're part of a fandom with a terrible reputation. Can we at least agree that isn't right, and ought to change? The sooner you accept that the internet is never going to be a nice place, the better off you get. That's from my experience. Obviously, you think differently & more likely won't agree with this at all, but I feel like people should not be forced to hold their voice.
