I saw it for a second time today, and I enjoyed it waaaaay more. I picked up on several little things that I missed first time around, like Kylo's feet leaving the red footprints on Crait but Luke's didn't, the Jedi texts being on the Millennium Falcon at the end etc...
I like that the main theme of the movie was failure. Finn and Rose failed in stopping the tracker, Luke failed Ben Solo, and the Jedi failed in a big way. The good guys don't usually fail like this in Star Wars movies.
I also loved that Rey's parents are nobodies, and I hope that was true. I don't think Kylo was lying to her at all (manipulating, sure). I like that Rey is important because she's Rey - not because she's someone's daughter/granddaughter/whatever.
The kid with the broom at the end leads me to believe that the title 'The Force Awakens' isn't talking about it awakening in Rey, it's talking about the Force awakening in general.
As for Kylo Ren getting redeemed, I'm torn on that. I'd like the bad guy to stay bad, but that doesn't seem very fitting for Star Wars. In the flashback sequence Luke said that it was Snoke that turned Kylo to the darkside, and he's obviously still struggling with everything. The way he flipped out at seeing the Millennium Falcon and Luke at the end shows that he still has a lot of Ben Solo in him that he's trying to bury. Either way, I doubt he's making it out of IX alive. I'm totally here for Force ghost Anakin bitching him out though.

I'm wondering what the deal is with that scene in "The Force Awakens" where Rey has that vision. One part showed Kylo killing another dude who was apparently going to kill her. Many assume it was something that happened in the past but I always wondered if it happened in the future. Since nothing like that happened in this movie I have to wonder if it will play out in the next film. Were those guys the "Knights of Ren" and if so where have they been these two films?

I have to say, I don't get how this movie is getting such great reviews. I mean, why kind of Star Wars movie has Pauly Shore and Stephen Baldwin trapped in a dome with Kylie Minogue? What were they thinking!?!?
EDIT: turns out I actually watched the 1996 movie 'Biodome' instead of 'Star Wars'. I'm not sure what happened there.

This movie has one of the most jarring differences I've ever seen between critics and audience on rottentomatoes.com. Critics give it 93%, while the audience score is 56% (!). For those that thing Disney is bribing critics, there is some ammo for you.

For those that thing Disney is bribing critics, there is some ammo for you. I think it's because some of the storytelling decisions in this movie are the kind of things that will split fan opinion. There are hardcore fans who are going to feel like it's trampling on their childhood memories. Me? I liked the story of Luke's failure, his guilt, and then going out with these huge feat of force use. I was one of those, "they better not kill off Luke" fans, but IMO they did it in the best way possible. I like the idea of Rey's parents being nobodies. It takes that cliché of being destined for greatness and flips it. Killing off Snoke was a good move. Episode 9 can now focus on Kylo Ren as the villain. I don't need to know more about Snoke. He was this new Emperor figure that rebuilt the Empire. Having the apprentice kill him and take over is way more interesting than having yet another Emperor Palpatine for the whole trilogy.

Saw it today. Loved it. Far better than TFA.
Loved
The theme of failure
Luke's plan
Kylos teased face turn by killing Smoke The hint that Hux has a light sabre and presumably force powers too? I expect something from him next movie
Rose was great
Kylo is a fantastic character. One of the best and most intriguing SW characters.
The penguin guinea pigs were cute.
Evil BB8 made me laugh.
The scenes with Rey, Kylo and Luke
Disliked
The opening smack talk by Poe. Felt out of place, wasn't all that funny and killed the scenes tension.
Poe still been in high standing despite almost f***ing everything up. Sure, demoted for his first screen up. Then he commits mutiny and not a word was said?
The code cracker guy was a irritating
The kid at the end. I presume he's a Jedi or force sensitive. But after young Anakin and young Boba, I don't trust kids in Star Wars.
All in all, great film.

Did I misread the Hux scene btw?
My first thought was he was going for a light sabre.

I have a feeling the stable kid will never been seen again and people are reading waaaaaaaay too into that scene.
Poe's mutiny... I think the lack of any consequence is a little bit of both "yeah, we expected you to do that" and "we've got like.. two dozen people tops left in this group, so we can't really afford to punish you".
And re: Luke dying, I'm honestly more satisfied that he died after basically over-exerting himself in a colossal use of force powers than actually going there in person and Obi-Wanning himself. People would have bitched either way. If he went there in person and sacrificed himself that way, people would have just complained it was too close to Obi-Wan.
And Disney bribing critics, really? I think it's still honestly just that Star Wars fans seem to be a relatively calcified bunch, and a film that's almost entirely set up around subverting fan expectations was naturally gonna piss people off. So much of it still comes off as "This wasn't EXACTLY how my headcanon/fan theory of what happens next played out, therefore it sucks!" logic.

Maybe they can bring Lando back for the 'ultimate sacrifice' in the next movie. Come on, Disney...come kill off some more. For what it's worth Oscar Isaac has said he, Hamill, Ridley, and Boyega have all asked J.J. to find a place for Lando in Episode IX. Yeah that'll be a priceless scene. Finn: "Welcome to the Rebellion, Mr. Calrissian" Lando: "Thanks! Hey, that's the Falcon! Wow. I bet Han is probably happy to get that back. Say, where is Han?" Finn: "He..uh... he's dead." Lando: "Oh...wow. That's awful. Uh, how's Luke doing these days?" Finn: "Dead." Lando: "Jesus. Leia has to feel bad losing both her husband and brother." Finn: "Well, uh...I think she's dead too." Lando: "Oh." Finn: "Yeah." Lando: "Ummm" Finn "..." Lando: "Well, good luck with your Rebellion. I'mma gonna get the f*** outta here before I get murdered as well. Chewy, you coming?" Chewy: *nodding vigorously* "Aaarg" Lando: "Let's go then! It was sure nice meeting everyone. Peace, bitches." Chewy: *double birds the Rebellion*

Hope so, but it seems odd to include that scene with the broom/lightsabre foreshadowing for no reason. True, they are a bit strapped for manpower. But Poe shit the bed twice. He lost all the fleets bombers to destroy a Dreadnought and then almost f***ed up the escape plan. I did like his arc in the movie though and how he learned by trusting Luke at the end rather than rushing out to help him and f***ing up again. Was a good character arc/ subplot. I liked Luke's death. Was well done.

Also add,
Loved that there was a sense that Rey would turn. I was expecting her to accept Kylo's offer and join him. Also liked that her parents are nobodies, that was a good twist.
The scene with Kylo destroying his wannabe Vader helmet was good. I've said it before but he is an excellent character.
Another dislike. Leia in space was too over the top for me. It was cool seeing her use the force but also seemed too silly.

Man, f*** that Leia Superman scene. To me that was a perfect way to kill her off. The only reason why I think they didn't is because they plan on redeeming Kylo (albeit probably sacrificing himself)

I think there are a number of reasons some fans are hating on this film:
1. People who are still angry they didn't just adapt the Thrawn Trilogy.
2. People who Grew up with the prequels and Clone Wars cartoon and are angry that it ISN'T like those.
3. People putting the original trilogy on a pedestal and ignoring it's flaws.
This movie may very well be the most flawed film of the Disney era but was it garbage or worst Star Wars film of all time? F no!
For example: Snoke. Who was he? They didn't say. No origin story. Guess who else didn't have an origin story? EMPEROR PALPATINE. Or should I say, "The Emperor". They never explained who he was or how he got there in the OT. he was just "The Emperor". They didn't even tell us his name. Only reason anyone knew his name and that he was once a Senator (pre-prequels) is because they had read the novels and EU material. I don't recall anyone complaining about him being as 2D character. If you suggest Snoke's origin will be revealed in a book or comic people fly into a rage about it.
Now I'm not saying they shouldn't have explained Snoke or the film wouldn't have been better if they did. Just that the idea that the OT didn't make some of the same mistakes isn't true.

Did anyone else notice that one of the disembodied voices Rey hears says "There is no emotion, there is peace"
A ton of things I learned on second viewing:
1. Those texts are on the Falcon. Rey had them with her the whole time. Yoda was right. Luke, once again, wasn't looking in front of his face. He was worried about something that wasn't there. No wonder Yoda laughed his ass off. Yoda does tell Luke that anything in that tree, she already has. I think Luke feels that Yoda was talking metaphorically. I sure did at first.
2. Everyone fails in their missions. Heroes and villains. Luke failed to teach Ben, Ben failed to kill Luke, Rey failed to turn Ben, Snoke failed to manipulate Rey and Ben, Hux failed to usurp power, Finn and Rose failed their mission to on Canto Bight, Phasma failed to kill Finn, do on and so forth. I guess the question going forward for each is "what did you learn?"
2. Admittedly, Rose's decision to stop Finn from destroying the battering ram is still very baffling. You just screwed everybody. Why? Because you're in love? What are you doing? It'd be interesting if they went the "Obsessed fan girl does crazy shit to get her idol's attention."
3. Didn't notice the rain water on Kylo's glove the first time around. I also have more questions about the Force bond. Snoke says he set it up but, Ren could still see her leaving on the Falcon after Snoke's death. Was Snoke just overestimating his own abilities?

The RT ratings says 56 percent, but the IMDB and deadline ratings are at 80 and 90 percent, respectively. It's just a movie that's going to divide some people.

Yeah, there's an obvious division. It's perfectly fine if you did/didn't like it. I lean more on the side of not loving it despite it having a LOT of stuff I did like..
I do think it's ironic that TFA is looked back negatively by many, yet upon first being released was WAY more liked than TLJ is right now.

I disliked it even more on the second viewing. It reminds me of the prequels. Are we sure George Lucas didn’t make this movie?
