Dave Meltzer took issue today with Sports Illustrated for doing a story on Miz with quotes that were done in character.
What's your stance on this?

Wrestling is in that weird area that it's all kinda dumb to cover.
We know it's not "real" but covering the insides of it is also kinda dumb, but there's also an audience for both.
End of the day who cares.

It is strange, but I guess I like it. Why not? Wrestling is the most fun when we l pretend it's real.

So, where do you draw the line? You think Ali meant all the over the top trash-talking he did about his opponents, or was he carnying it up to get more eyes on his fights? How about Chael Sonnen?
The only issue here is pro wrestling getting sports coverage at all in spite of not actually being a competitive sport, because the guys promoting themselves is identical all around.

I agree with Meltzer. You can be one or you can be the other but you cannot be both. Trying to be both only hurts what credibility you have. You want to keep kayfabe, do it, have fun with it, hell, I'll enjoy it but once you go down that Russo Road of "This is real but this over here isn't" you have zero credibility in both.

It's beyond stupid. Dave is right.
"Omg Dolph Lundgren threatened to break Sylvester Stallone!"
"Bruce Willis watches as Alan Rickman falls to his death!"

I think this is dumb in the age of social media ..oh lets go an incharacter interview but then go on social media 5min after and suddenly not in character.
If they want to play into kayfabe that much...it would be helpful if ya know there show did but they don't.
f***ing hell WWE choose a path and stick to it!

I think Meltzer is wrong here.
A kayfabe article doesn't harm the "real" sports website and it generates a lot more interest in seeing Miz and Bryan eventually wrestle than an article with Miz (the real person) saying how much he respects Daniel Bryan and what a cool guy he is.

I like it when wrestlers are still in character outside of the usual wrestling outlets. Wrestlers using other media outlets to try and push stories they want and creating a buzz is a really clever way of trying to get things to Vince without getting a pushback directly.
Meltzer should realize this.

“He doesn’t deserve to be in the ring with me. He’s not at the level that I am” — The Miz (Mike Mizanin) on Daniel Bryan (Bryan Danielson)
There, I fixed it for Dave.

I feel like trying to keep even the slightest notion of kayfabe is completely idiotic and a major part of why non-fans have such a hard time taking it seriously. There's a reason nobody responds to, I dunno, Game of Thrones fans with, "You know that shit's fake, right?"

There's a reason nobody responds to, I dunno, Game of Thrones fans with, "You know that shit's fake, right?" But that's also the reason that legit news outlets need to play along with kayfabe a bit. If you were to interview an actor in, say, Game of Thrones, you wouldn't ignore "Game of Thrones" in that interview and you would try to ask them to bring non-viewers up to speed about who their character is and what they did on the show. By the same token, if you're interviewing a pro wrestler, it's fair to have the wrestler play up their current storyline and feud for what they're currently doing on TV and why it's something you might want to pay attention to.

True, but in that case at least openly talk about it from the perspective of the performer, like, "How do you feel about this current storyline?" or something. A reporter asking Miz what he plans to do when Bryan finally gets his hands on him is about like if one of them asked Chris Hemsworth what he plans to do to stop Thanos.

I don't really care either way, to be honest, but what if they covered something that was a shoot? Also, would anyone have a problem with them posting the match results since that's part of the story and not real? I'm just curious on where people draw the line for things like this.

Unless this was OBVIOUSLY PRESENTED as in-character, Meltzer is completely right. I mean, they don't have to say "this is fake," but you should be able to clearly tell the difference in the presentation.
A kayfabe interview with "the Miz" works as an ad for WWE, and there's nothing wrong with that. An interview with Mike Mizanin about life on the road, what he hopes to be remembered for, etc., is more along the lines of what you'd expect out of "legitimate" journalism.
