"As I was hurt, I had time to sit back and watch the show, and was able to watch more wrestling than I have in a long time because I have been so busy in general. I was really sitting back and watching WWE Raw and studying it, and I noticed basically that it wasn't necessarily all killer. They have some great athletes, obviously, but they don't necessarily... they don't look like they should be there. I went backstage in one of their shows, and I said this in another interview on WWE.com, and I noticed that the atmosphere was a bit different than when I was first here. There wasn't any tension in the air. There was a lack of that competitive spirit backstage with each other. "Back in the day, WWE and WCW used to have this rivalry, and the reason why they were so good was because they had to bring their 'A Game' every single week until it closed. WWE had all these alpha males; they had the best of the best all fighting for the top spot, and made great TV for the fans and it grew the audience and that was a great thing about it, but now there is only a few people willing to fight for the top spot which means that we have 3 hours of Raw and 2 hours of SmackDown, that is a lot of open air of people who are just happy to be there and happy to be in WWE, and do what is asked of them, and collecting a paycheck. Now, whenever I look at the screen and since I've been doing this for a long time, I can look into their eyes and tell if they want to be here, and if they have that fire into their eyes, and when I don't see that it frustrates me. I know down in NXT there is about 100 people with that fire in their eyes who are willing to take that spot from them in that second, so I am here to start eradicating the people that don't want to be here, and to set an example for everybody and bring back the way things used to be." wrestlinginc.com/wi/news/2018/0523/641158/drew-mcintrye-says-wwe-talent-dont-have-that-fire-like-in-nxt-or/

That's dangerous thinking there, Drew. Make like your tag team partner. Embrace mediocrity, take the paycheck.

Having fire and passion is nice.
Go ask Bayley and Zack Ryder how all that fire and passion helped while being booked and written like garbage, Drew.

He's probably right but the main roster guys aren't rewarded for their 'fire' like the NXT guys are.

Yeah, it's a worthwhile question to ask what level of responsibility a performer has. But this 'pull yourself up by the bootstraps' you hear from wrestlers, often wrestlers with some degree of backing, can be infuriating.

I'm not sure if he's speaking in character or if that's how he sincerely feels...or both, but the sooner men can stop being pro-occupied with worrying about what a 'real man' is the faster we can evolve and not abuse ourselves and fall into an abyss of depression, self harm, or something even worse. Something that plagued a previous generation of wrestlers. And something currently plaguing countless amounts of young men on the internet who feel the need to be 'alpha males' like Drew described and act in a way that doesn't reflect actual reality.
I'm glad there is no tension, fighting, or bullying in the locker room. We have evolved and people with Drew's mindset belongs in the 50s.

The problem is that NXT is booked like a wrestling show and Raw and Smackdown are booked like bad variety shows that happen to take place in a wrestling company.

Yeah, the problem is, in WWE, "fire and passion" isn't what earns rewards. The only way to the top is "Knowing how to please an insane, possibly slowly hitting senility, billionaire".

He's probably right but the main roster guys aren't rewarded for their 'fire' like the NXT guys are. Yea, whether he's speaking in character or not this is it here
Cien Almas bombed for a year before he turned it around and was the quintessential jobber to the stars guy
Velveteen Dream another example of having to start over after a bad start

The majority of NXT guys have more fire because they want to get out of NXT and get the money and exposure that comeswith getting a main roster slot. Once they get there, they find that if they're not handpicked for greatness the way that Roman and Randy Orton were, you will face a massive uphill battle to get anywhere, and moreoften than not, the fire goes out before management change their plans to make bet use of a guy who worked hard to get over. I can't say I blame them, it's undoubtedly spirit crushing to work your backside off, only to see guys come straight from developmental into a main event role, and stay there no matter how poor their reception.

Drew McIntyre states that main roster talent doesn't have to fire NXT guys like he does.

What the article leaves out is how he went on to talk about how much of an honour it is to be in this arena here tonight, in front of these fans, putting in the work and doing what he can to entertain them, because they're what make this business great, and driving from town to town and working indie shows for no money was worth it to get right here tonight right now in (CITY)

The NXT guys don't have the schedule, either, or even a quarter of the scrutiny.
If he's not in kayfabe mode, he is in doofus mode.

Drew, that "tension and competitive environment" behind the scenes during the Monday Night War would have buried you, sweetheart Let's see, decently sized, talented guy, long hair, muscles.....yeah, Shawn and Triple H would have eaten him alive, circa 97.
