I just finished watching The Last Jedi on Netflix. I didn't bother seeing it in the theater because a co-worker spoiled it for me, and then I avoided it after that because of all the negativity. But you know what? I thought it was great!
It was a little too long; there was a lot of fluff that could have been trimmed. But it fixed the main problem I had with The Force Awakens - that the new characters were ciphers. Well, Finn is still a cipher, but it really made me care about Rey, Poe, and Kylo. I'm excited for the next installment now.

Well Rutger Hauer is awesome. Tropic Thunder looked bad on paper, but was actually a fun time because of the right people to make the material work. Would you say it m-m-made you haaaaappy? As happy as getting a TiVo.

I thought the first Pirates of the Caribbean was going to absolutely suck. I was thinking "Pirates, really? I love the ride and all...but this pirate movie probably isn't going to have jack crap to do with the ride and will probably be just a bunch of boring Brits sitting around drinking tea and occasionally going "Arrr." Man, was completely wrong on that one. Pirates of the Caribbean ended up being probably one of my favorite Disney movies of all time and was everything I secretly wanted from a movie based on the ride.
I didn't really have high hopes for The Peanuts Movie or The Lego Movie either. Besides the first Christmas special and first Halloween special, I find a lot of the animated Peanuts movies to be boring as hell, especially the one where they were pilgrims on the Mayflower. I expected the Lego movie to just be a bunch of Adam Sandler inspired "LOL aren't we just so random!" drivel bullcrap. Instead, both movies were amazing! Peanuts was extremely touching, and I cried while seeing it. Lego was fun as heck, and I adore that "Everything is Awesome" song. Good stuff!

New Magnificent Seven movie wasn't bad. Not a classic like the original but it was a damn fine flick.

I was dreading watching the new Jumanji, but it was actually pretty funny and I loved Jack Black in it. It's not masterpiece theatre but it was a fun way to spend two hours.

I can think of several. I remember seeing the Pulp Fiction trailer with John Travolta and Uma Thurman dancing and thinking it was going to be a silly movie and then I was completely blown away by how good it was. I ended up going to see Rise of the Planet of the Apes with some friends thinking it was going to be a CGI poop fest and it was surprisingly great. I thought Oblivion wasn’t going to be any good but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Didn’t know what to expect from Drive and liked it so much that I went out and bought the Blu Ray right away and I never do that. I couldn’t sleep one night so I figured I’d watch a movie and drift off. I chose Layer Cake having no idea how good it was. I was totally glued to it and couldn’t sleep at all after.

That new Jumanji was actually a fun watch. Also, the first of the new TMNT movies was the first time I ever sat in a theater actually thinking "This doesn't suck??"

New Magnificent Seven movie wasn't bad. Not a classic like the original but it was a damn fine flick. Oddly enough, I was very leery about watching "the original" knowing that it was a remake of Seven Samurai but it was entertaining enough on its own.

After Anchorman, Will Ferrell went on a string of movies that just looked really bad. Me and some friends watched Talladega Nights years after it came out, and I legit cried laughing at the blindfold sequence. And the whole movie is way, way better comedy than I ever expected out of it.

I was dreading watching the new Jumanji, but it was actually pretty funny and I loved Jack Black in it. It's not masterpiece theatre but it was a fun way to spend two hours. I never knew I wanted Jack Black to be a teenage girl, marvel at his penis, crush on The Rock, give flirting tips to Karen Gillan, and yell out "Yes, queen!", but this movie showed that I did want those. He stole the movie, and it was hard to steal the movie. Freaking fun and hilarious, with everybody hitting their parts perfectly.

Recently, it was Solo. I didn't have high expectations for it, but damn, I had fun during it. Gotta agree with Solo. It sounded like such a train wreck leading up to it (with all the bad press, reshoots and fired directors) but it ended up being just fine. I was so happy leaving that theatre. I thought Rogue One was going to be bad too after the trailers (that cringy “I rebel” line) but it ended up being my second favourite Star Wars movie (and that line was cut from the final film)

The Bucket List with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. Universally slated, but I didn't think it was at all bad.
Million Dollar Arm about recruiting baseball players from India was also a pleasant surprise. Both films I thought would be 'meh' at best were actually very enjoyable.

Two spring immediately to mind.
Crazy, Stupid Love - This is really just an extraordinarily above-average rom-com, but it's SO tightly written, funny and sweet that it somehow outclasses almost everything in its own genre.
The Last Kiss - I thought this would be a fluffy screwball comedy. It stars Zach Braff! I watched it the first weekend after my girlfriend went to university and we weren't sure if our relationship would survive. This was a foolish decision, because while the characters in it are funny sometimes, it's actually a hard-hitting, gut-wrenching relationship drama that makes it really clear that there are no easy answers and sometimes no happy endings in life. Brilliant.

The new Jumanji. Oh never mind, that's a movie that was worse than expected. GARBAGE.
Hell or High Water. Heard nothing about it, saw a trailer on a bluray for it that looked pretty good. The movie is terrific.

I had zero expectations for Seven Psychopaths. I only went because my stepson wanted to go see it purely based on the title. It was so enjoyable.

Role Models. Watched it absolutely blind due to an auto-next from some movie I watched prior (can't recall what it was), but Paul Rudd and Sean William Scott have proven to be the kings of underestimation for me.
I mean seriously...the entire third act is Dagorhir:

I recently Redboxed Game Night. I wasn’t expecting much, but it was pretty funny. And Jesse Plemons totally stole the movie. My only complaint was the ending kinda dragged.

Bernie. Story sounded interesting enough for a watch, but i was shocked at how good it was, and Jack Black was exceptional in the title role.
