I was legit excited by the [fake] tweet Ed O’Neil sent challenging Punk. I would pay all the money for Ed O’Neil v. Punk. Mr Bundy has taken bjj since the early nineties, since before the ufc even existed. I think Ed was one of Rorion Gracie’s original students. He would tap out Punk four times in one day. I see what you did there........

Probably the biggest theft in ppv history. Hey pay me two million to get my ass kicked twice. Just embarrassing. Eh he helped goose the numbers on at least the first ppv. It was an embarrassing showing both times, no question, but he did get eyes on there at least once.

We had a thread tracking his WWE title run, so why not a little more dubious tracker? On December 6, 2014 at UFC 181, the UFC announced that they had signed CM Punk. On September 10, 2016, Punk lost his first fight to Mickey Gall at UFC 203. UFC President Dana White said Punk would most likely not fight again. Punk fought again on June 9, 2018 at UFC 225, losing in a unanimous 30-26 decision against Mike Jackson. UFC President Dana White said Punk would most likely not fight again. Punk remains employed by UFC. My respect for UFC as a legitimate athletic entity has gone drastically down ever since they started this clown show of an experiment. At least when the MLB trotted out Garth Brooks it was only in spring training.

To be real though, if you look at those earliest UFC cards, there's always been a sideshow aspect. They made it more legitimate sport later, but where there were no weight classes and such it was a straight up freak show.

The only time they let an actor fight was in tuf China and they realized that he was a fake after he got his ass kicked.

Could Punks UFC run have gone any worse than it did?
He's easily the worst fighter I've ever seen in the UFC and I'd be amazed if he's not the worst in history.

Mickey Gall could've hit him with an uppercut once and his head could've come clean off like a rock 'em sock 'em robot. Which as someone who doesn't really watch MMA is what I was hoping for personally.

Mike Jackson is a horrible fighter who fought a division above his weight and was never UFC caliber. He decimated and humiliated Punk. I think it would be tough for Punk’s run to have gone worse without UFC intentionally trying too. They should have just gone full Pride and threw him in there against people like Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic. At some people might respect Punk then for going so crazy out of his league. Of course then he may not exist anymore so there is that.

Sure, but when you have a four hundred lb dude fighting a guy who's less than two hundred etc.. that's a bit of a freak show. They even promoted it that way: 'no rules!'

You’re talking about the Emanuel Yarbrough and Keith Hackney fight. I think they put in place the weight classes after that clusterf***. Even then both those guys had combat experience. Ol Phil started training after he got signed.

However, because he has gold glove background and Punk has no type of combat or athletic training whatsoever he was toast

Yeah it’s pretty funny when you watch the first 10 or so UFCs. After all the backlash UFC got from state commissions they quickly distanced themselves from the ‘no rules!’ stuff they used to hype UFC 1. I think at UFC 9 or so at one point there is even some UFC official who gives a speech that of course they have rules and are not just free for all fights. Around UFC 9 or so they also are encouraging a lot of their fans to do grassroots stuff to make UFC more widely available. Anyway back on topic perhaps CM Punk could have got a win over some other bum who never should have been fighting at one of the early UFCs, but in the modern era he never had a chance against legitimate competition. It would have been more entertaining if they used him as fodder for elite talent or scrapped the barrels of MMA to find some people he could actually beat, to create a draw. As it is, it has been a painful experiment dragged out over nearly four years during which Punk has never come off worse or less entertaining. Please end it already.

How long until the novelty of Punk in the ufc wears off? Eventually people will stop giving a trap.
On a related note, how long until the brand of Punk is worthless?

He probably still has another five years at least where he could return to WWE and be used in-ring for some good matches. He could do the same in NJPW and elsewhere for about as long, but of course WWE is the biggest show in town. Much longer than that though and more and more fans will start wandering away from the product and new fans won’t know who he is. He’ll always have some name value, but at some point there won’t be much more to do with him other than have him be that old dude who came back to bury the hatchet with HHH/Vince.

Novelty of Punk in UFC has worn off at least for Dana. I think after the 1st fight you had the excuse of a 2nd fight in which you can say maybe he learned but nah he really didn't

I thought Dana was going to release Punk after the fight. He has nothing of value left to offer at this point.

The second fight exposed him way more than the first one. At least with the first fight you could make the excuse that Punk made a rookie mistake then got beaten by a young untested fighter who could become an elite fighter. In the second fight the UFC fed him what would have been a can to every single other signed WW and heck even LW. Then the bum not only beat him, but beat him in decisive and embarrassing fashion. More importantly for the UFC though that second fight didn’t generate a lot of added buys to the PPV it was on. This should be the end of the CM Punk experiment, but he’s still on the roster. He really should never fight again and if the UFC wants to keep him in video games and stuff then his deal should be re-worked to a licensing agreement.
