Who are some commentators who dont really get brought up much, but were pretty good at the job. Two that come to mind are: Hillbilly Jim: Surprisingly good, especially since he didnt really play up the whole Hillbilly persona and took the role seriously. Looking back, it's fitting that he went on to be a DJ. Bob Caudle: While I can admit he could be somewhat dry at times, his delivery had more of a "real sport" feel that gave JCP/WCW a sense of dignity.

I’m sure people will laugh at me but I always thought Sean Mooney was better than he’s given credit for.

Post-wrestling Rick Rude filled in a few times and sounded like he could have been Jesse Ventura Jr. if was really given a long-term opportunity.

I think Paul Heyman was pretty underrated in his commentary run when he replaced lawler. Also Foley was decent

People praise him and give him credit for making JR get off his ass and up his game as well

Heyman and JR always had a bit of chemistry, going back to their WCW days.

A lot of F bombs and foolishness but in a good way that people would have enjoyed
JR sitting there being the straight man would make it even more hilarious

Going away from wrestling, Brian Stann. During his UFC commentary tenure, I actually thought he was better than Joe Rogan and thus the best color guy in UFC (Florian was OK but is much better on BattleBots, Cruz is absolute dogshit, Hardy is all over the map and also sucks, Cormier is mediocre, and Felder is good but not spectacular).

Michael Cole
WAIT! HEAR ME OUT!
Just that he gets such rabid stick for being Vince's mouthpiece, people forget how good he can actually be. Beast in the East for example, and myriad other great calls at big moments.

Actually, you're right. You can notice a major difference when Vince isn't in his ear at all times. During the original UK Championship tournament, he and Nigel McGuinness had some pretty good chemistry together.

I dunno if "underrated" is the right word for it, but I don't think Striker is as bad as the majority says he is.

I dunno if "underrated" is the right word for it, but I don't think Striker is as bad as the majority says he is. He was great on ECW then soon descended into obnoxiousness. It's Joey Styles syndrome. He was a good announcer until he realised he was a good announcer.

Lord Alfred. Always called it as a sporting event and while he was typically associated as a baby-face commentator, he would always support whoever wrestled the smartest match regardless of alignment.

Tazz I thought was decent on Smackdown with Cole, seemed to offer good insight at times.

I mentioned this yesterday in the Neidhart thread, but Jim was pretty good as the "wrestler who has been in the ring with these guys" part of the crew. Made Mean Gene actually sound decent when he and Gorilla would throw something to Jim like "Tell us about [this guy]."
Dick Graham had a helluva job trying to call the match while keeping Kal Rudman in line.
