Being honest if they do weight classes it'll probably do a lot to kill my interest in the company right out of the gate. I've always thought it's just an inherently stupid idea in wrestling.

Juniors can be interesting, since you can expect a different sort of style, but it often leads to the perception that they're inferior, NJPW included. The name also can add an infantilization problem, further making the division treated as a joke or afterthought.

Space Monkey is the latest name reported to have signed an AEW deal. Never seen a match, but the whole act sounds like an animal-themed El Generico to me, which is definitely a plus.

Yeah, not a fan of weight classes myself. They just make little sense to me, especially with how what used to be a Jr. now being a normal wrestler in most places, in style and size. Space Monkey is the latest name reported to have signed an AEW deal. Never seen a match, but the whole act sounds like an animal-themed El Generico to me, which is definitely a plus. Space Monkey is awesome! He is just so much fun and great break from the crazy seriousness that can show can take on. I became a big fan when he had no problem taking the little kids at a WrestleCircus outside to play games when they Masada wrestled I think, Jordan Len-X in basically a deathmatch. I thought that was a neat thing to do and a great memory for those kids.

I'm all for a Jungle Boy/Space Monkey tag team. They can call it Animal House.
I would think World, Tag and Women's titles. Wouldn't mind a "TV" title or something down the line for midcard talent to battle over, but it would be weird for the Bucks of all people to limit wrestlers due to their size with a Jr. belt.

If you're gonna do weight classes, go down the UFC route and make it more actually-differentiated and not promoted as any greater than the other. Could even then have a general 'AEW Undisputed Champion' or something that fights anybody of any weight.

I agree I don't see that being the case in having a jr belt or lightweight title. I mean being that PAC and Adam Page did the stare down and they where the first two to bring up the World title. PAC falls under that Jr division or did in the WWE anyway. If they have a two hour show for TV or midcard title should be there.

The name also can add an infantilization problem, further making the division treated as a joke or afterthought. Yeah, weight divisions in a worked sport need to be handled very carefully; there has to be a plan in mind for why you have them in the first place, how you intend to present each division, and how you'll ensure fans will care going forward about each of them, even if it's to varying levels. NJPW is close to having a good feel for it, but they always stop short of really going all-out in giving the Jr. belt the full prestige it could have and often leave their junior division short on names; among the main puro companies it always felt like NOAH handled its GHC Jr. scene better, on the whole, mainly during its golden era with KENTA and Marufuji holding the belt. But over there it kind of works if you view the Jr. belts as restricted to a certain weight limit, but the heavyweight title being open to anybody, with juniors just accepting the size disadvantage they're at going into their challenges for the belt; that way the heavyweight feels more prestigious due to the larger field of possible challengers while the Jr. belt has a logical reason for having so many younger guys going after it due to the kayfabe and real life reason that many young guys aren't fully grown into their bodies yet and may not be over 220 or whatever pounds. If NJPW would grow their junior division more and allow more juniors a chance to compete for heavyweight titles (bye for now, Kushida ), then I'd say they have the right idea for the most part, but even then they'd have the "heavies just about always pin juniors in prelim tag matches" issue. Long story short: the weight divisions really only make sense if you have a roster with the proper size and diversity of body types to allow for or call for it, and even then you have to keep a strong mission statement in mind for how you'll handle it. I assume AEW won't start with a ridiculously large roster, so I'm guessing it's not on the table right away.

If want to do non-title kudos for the midcard, they could wait a few months and do Bunkhouse Brawls or the equivalent, baybeh.

Ideal for me would be positioning Jericho as such early on while you get everything established but working to eventually move the ball to PAC. You've also got MJF, who could wind up being a HUGE deal. I am still surprised WWE didn't pounce on MJF long before now. Dude's like the product of a drunken threesome between Berto, Miz, and EC3.

If you haven't, check out his segments on the two most recent BTE's. If they can actually translate that to in ring, dude will be golden.

I'd much rather see a division that is different from the rest stylistically. Think the ROH Pure title where the rules were different and changed his matches were laid out or how the NEVER title kinda became the super strong style title. Not really a hardcore title though as that would take away from similar matches being used in other feuds.
That said, focusing on the World, Women, and Tag at start would probably be best way to go.

They should not have too much focus on weight classes but I always liked the idea of having a Super Heavyweight championship for the really big guys. And maybe have a title for the smaller younger guys that are more new to this business. Maybe called the "Spotlight" title.

A super heavyweight title is one of those things that is fun or awful, no in-between. Though, there just aren't that many huge dudes on the indies nowadays.

What makes a heavyweight and a non heavyweight when like 90% of the roster is the same size

Promoting something like that would be tricky in this day and age, and would be a nightmare in terms of medical clearances and insurance if they went more Vader and less Undertaker in terms of build.

Yeah, times are different now. I don’t see guys like Styles, Bryan, Balor or the Bucks as “small guys” anymore, they’re average sized wrestlers. Having some mass and a good body never hurts from a marketing standpoint, but if ZSJ can be so comparatively lean and be booked as a killer these days, all bets are off. You don’t need to be super jacked to become a star in 2019.
Hell, New Japan is essentially treating the Junior Heavyweight Titles as midcard belts that you can graduate past to heavyweight, looking at how the Bucks moved up and Ospreay talking about wanting to compete in different weight classes.

How many championship are they going to have? I figure when they started, they would have a world, tag and women title. Can't see them having a mid card or Jr. Heavyweight title until later on. I would go with World Heavyweight, World Television (if we can fit a mid card belt), World Tag and World Women's.
