I remember the famous one from 2004: which contained Test, Billy Gunn, Albert and some others.
This worked its way into the post "Wrestlemania release" for the nxt few years.
I'm glad it's not a regular occcuence now. Releases seem so few and far between now it's almost as if wrestlers can enjoy some kind of job security.

Yeah, it seems you have to be a complete idiot to get released these days.

The company has more money than it knows what to do with and it's usually easier to just let contracts expire.

2005 was the one I remember most, I remember Smackdown vs Raw 2006 was very outdated because of it.
I think the last time they had one of these was in 2016.

It used to be so exciting, to see if Funaki or JTG would survive.

The last "mass" release was that random Sunday when they released Darren Young, Emma and Summer. May have been only three but the first time in quite awhile where they released multiple people who weren't in NXT.

There was a big one in 2014 after none for a while. Just when you think Mass Releases are done, they come back, basically.

Remember in 2008, they split it over two weeks in August, a week in November and a week in January 2009? I remember this specifically because I had so many fantasy booking ideas for the post-draft rosters and they killed it all pretty quick lol

Crazy that the one in 2014 had somebody who would be a future World champion and somebody who has been massively protected since his return (oh and Curt Hawkins too)

They haven't gone away altogether, the last big one was May 2016 (Sandow, Hornswoggle, Zeb etc) which is not so long ago. The last one before that was June 2014 (Brodus, JTG, Teddy Long among others).
It's more like they've just gone back to the way things were in the 90s when they were very sporadic (1995 and 1999 both had them for example), unlike the 2000s when they suddenly became a semi-regular occurrence.

2005 was the one I remember most, I remember Smackdown vs Raw 2006 was very outdated because of it. Oddly enough, of that infamous mass release of 2005 (18 talents in a 48 hour period) only 3 of those talents were in that SvR2006 game. So that may not have been the reason that particular game was outdated (unless WWE somehow made THQ/Yukes do some hardcore deletion jobs which perhaps took time away that would've been used on adding other people that then were left out.)

They do their best to avoid it after they went public in the stock market; it hurts their stock when they do. I kind of miss "Spring Cleaning", heh. Yes, I too miss the days of a dozen plus people having their sudden unemployment status broadcast worldwide all at once. Fun times.

Ironically (something I read, may or may not have been NEWZ) one of their recent cleanings was urged on by stock owners claiming they were spending a little too much on contracts, so they did some trimming.

WWE’s current goal seems to be to have every wrestler in the world under contract at once. I think they’re going for a Guinness record or something. Good for the talent at least.
