This isn't really a goofy Russo swerve or hot shot booking move though. Maybe to do it right before Survivor Series, but not as an overall deal. What has been a theme of Bryan's return? Namely that he has been disappointing, that even he realizes he doesn't really have it anymore the way he used to. Miz hammered this point home several times, including when he won at SS. Bryan also has been acting semi heelish for a while now, attacking Miz at his house or threatening Miz/Maryse with what he thought at the time was an infant in the ring, generally acting kind of odd. The clean submission loss to Styles was the last straw. He needed to force a rematch somehow and didn't care if he cheated to win since he knows straight up he can't really beat AJ otherwise.
Sorry but this isn't like Becky Lynch. This was a well put together heel turn. That said, other than Styles everyone on the brand is a total heel as far as top guys go. I think this might be a short term shock title change just to do Bryan/Lesnar at Survivor Series since Bryan has wanted that match for a while and it's really the only time they can do it. Would they really keep a title on Bryan long term given his health history?

Yeah he turned heel but I don't know how many times we can do the "Bryan is an underdog and face he's climbing his way to the tit-" storyline that we've seen with him getting every singles title he's gained in the company. This is the one that they actually flipped the script and did something different for him. This is going back to what made him mega-over in the first place and this gives him more creative freedom which also works with Bryan given he likes being a heel more than a face. More than anything it gives him the top title on the brand after all he's done. That's just better to me from a writing standpoint. I honestly don't want to see anymore "underdog Bryan climbs his way to the top to win the title" storylines anymore after all Bryan's done. Yup. That story has been done. Now let's move on. DB is good enough to pull off almost any story, and his heel work has always been excellent going all the way back to ROH. I'm failing to see a negative here. He had a big ol' babyface return. Time for a new direction now. This is a top guy doing top guy things with the top belt. Exactly. As much as I love underdog Daniel Bryan, we’ve seen that story happen so many times. It happened with his US Title win, his WWE title chase/win, his IC title win when he was going up against six competitors or so and then the Sheamus feud thereafter. It’s time for Daniel to sink his teeth into a new side of himself. The side that arguably got him over in the first place. Let him be the cocky chicken shit again, but let him become more sickening with each action he takes to keep the title. Let the title consume him into madness with delusion.

God I am so freaking sick of every single WWE heel turn's immediate followup being, "I don't owe you an explanation!" It's so goddamn lazy and repetitive.

The timing was weird and yes, there have been a lot of these turns lately. However, I like this one. Bryan returned and couldn't get big wins. He struggled against Cass, lost to Miz (only beat him in lucky fashion) and couldn't beat AJ. It was getting to him. Things changed around him. He had to do something different. This was it.

That’s the look of a psycho who’s had to pretend to be the man of the people for too damn long in order to get what he truly wants. I love it omg lol

Also take into account that Brie is also a heel. Perhaps his wife got in his ear, telling him he didn't need the fans, and has to look out for himself.

They could do a lot with resentment towards fans over their reaction to Brie too. This is gonna be a good outlet with a lot of exploration and opportunity.
Plus with the chaos of WWE internally lately, some serious shakeups have been needed.

Can they give the WWE title a darker paint job? It looks so much better in that lower lighting.

Bryan, Becky, Ambrose, Nakamura, Orton.
Funny how these popular stars from 2016 (Nakamura was in NXT) all end up as heels in 2018 lol.

To be honest, Bryan has really kind of sucked for the last few months. Being an asshole could be a fun new turn for him, because what he was doing, wasn’t working, in my opinion. I just want a video of Nakamura smiling in the back like a proud father for using the dick kick to AJ And to top it off, AJ Styles got pinned with a "Knee...to....Face".

I'm completely with kn and a few others here. I dont give a flying f*** that he turned heel, I'm at work and saw the post of him with the belt on his shoulder and lost my shit.
A year ago I was watching old Bryan matches and lamenting I'd never see him wrestle again, and now he's champion. All of my yes.

I don't know what angers me more: Bryan as a champion again or WWE turning him heel now.
