At the end of the day, I’d say Ambrose has had a good run, especially for someone with a deathmatch background. Did he get to reach his full potential? No. The character never got to be as dangerous and dark as it could have been. I’d even say that his FCW run is probably his best character work in the WWE system. But, once he got to the main roster, he was basically a featured talent the entire time, arguably up until this possible last few months where he’s dropped from upper midcard/fringe main eventer to just midcard. He’s won a shitload of belts and got a back catalogue of banger matches with a whole bunch of Shield six-man tags and some other scattered stuff here and there (SummerSlam 2014 Lumberjack match with Rollins, Backlash 2016 with Styles, the tag matches with The Bar)... There’ll be some regrets, but not too many. It probably could have been darker and I agree with you on most points, yeah. but then we never would have gotten moments like this: Or for that matter... If it really turns out that he hated doing goofy stuff like this, it'd be a shame because while there was a lot of it that was pretty dodgy, there was some that was actually really funny.

If they retaliate against Renee, they'll look petty AF (though I admit that's never stopped them before). If worse comes to worse, they can very easily find a spot for her in AEW or wherever he ends up. I doubt she's too worried. Yeah, she has options, and not necessarily just in wrestling. Obviously AEW is a possibility. But remember the rumors a while back that ESPN was interested? Even if that fizzled, there are plenty of other sports outlets that would probably be glad to have her—Fox, CBS, NBC, NFL Network, Turner Sports (hmm 🤔), possibly a Canadian network if they can match the money and she can work out a decent commuting arrangement. Or, I don’t know if she would have any interest, but she might fit well on a CNN/Fox News/MSNBC-type outlet. (I’m going to stick to the media side of this, so that we hopefully avoid the politics rabbit hole.) She has a look and personality that you might see on those networks, and obviously she can handle a talking head panel format. (Britt McHenry recently jumped from sports to Fox News, so that kind of move is not unheard of. Not to mention Tyrus/Brodus.) My point being, if Vince gets too petty with her, she has plenty of options herself.

Incidentally it is really sad that the only way to actually get the Shield guys away from each other is for one of them to quit and another to get leukemia. This certainly would be the "end of an era" in that sense. Aside from Ambrose's brief WWE Title run on Smackdown, those three have ruled Raw for years now.

Some people look at the Lesnar match as the beginning of the end for him, or the Austin podcast. To me it was the Styles feud. That Sept. 2016 PPV match they had was just jarring. It was a very good match, but just watching it you could flat out tell that Styles was straight up better than Ambrose. Crisper, better moves, more athletic. The fans sided with the heel AJ there as well.

I think the point that began his downfall in WWE is that joke of a Wrestlemania match against Lesnar. Counterpoint: I agree it took the shine off him, and sounds like that was largely down to Brock - but I would say his last big chance was probably his WWE title defence against Ziggler at that year's Summerslam. Really seemed that was the match that made Vince sit back and think, "eeehh, neither of these are going to be my guy."

Don’t really blame the guy. WWE needs this kick in the ass to show them that you need to start booking your stars better.
Just nobody tell edgestar, ok?

As soon as the shield broke up Vince already decided Dean wasnt going to be his guy. And Ziggler he has that opinion since he won the MITB

That's a shame. But if dude is not happy there, no point in staying. Dude had a great run as WWE champ. Can't believe they botched his heel turn so badly, actually I can.
Hope he's happy where ever he ends up.

Not surprised at all. I think this has been brewing for years. He was white hot after the Shield broke up, and rather than capitalize, they turned him into a wacky dork and fed him to Bray Wyatt. That pretty much set up the pattern he's been in ever since.
As for where he's headed, I'm almost certain it'll be AEW. He and Jericho are buddies, and if they promise him creative freedom on top of lots of money and a light schedule, why not?

Here's some quotes from an interview with Ambrose after he returned. Back then when I read it I was thinking that they'll either listen to him or he'll leave eventually and well, here we are.

I enjoyed Jon Moxley, but WWE's Dean Ambrose never did it for me. I still think he had a heck of a career. I hope he takes some time off and gets some rest before jumping into anything new.

I wonder what his career would have looked like had Lesnar played ball with him and he was allowed to have his Austin at 'Mania 13 moment that we all wanted, and the story dictated.

Just to put it into perspective: the Shield as a team have collectively been a part of the WWE's main event for nearly 7 years now since their debut in November 2012. This is two years longer than the 'Attitude Era,' slightly longer than the full-time main event tenures of The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and Mick Foley, and longer than the entire run of WCW Monday Night Nitro.
They've accomplished a hell of a lot, but the homogenization of the product in the last 15-20 years just made it all seem like it came and went in a blur when the truth is the longevity of each guy on the roster has been fairly average for stars back in the biggest era professional wrestling has had in the modern era. As these men and women take better care of themselves, 10-20 year careers with the same company are becoming much more commonplace (Forgotten Era nonwithstanding), and the independent circuit is far more profitable now than it ever was.
If Ambrose is truly done with the company, he will be perfectly fine with whatever he decides to do. He isn't injured to the point of incapacitation, he isn't struggling to make ends meet due to the money he made throughout the last decade with the company (he is one of the last FCW guys after all), and most importantly he still has the potential to break out and carry the company if they gave him the opportunity. Leaving on his own terms is a respectable move that, while likely to upset quite a few in the community, people in the higher-up office should take into consideration knowing that he's not quitting because he wasn't given a choice, rather he is choosing to leave on his own accord.

It ain't about the money man, it ain't about the money.
As an Ambrose fan I love this. Finally, someone who doesn't care about the money.

I never liked skinny Ambrose. He came and finally looked like a star and now he’s leaving. Damn Comparing Ambrose when he returned to now, he's lost most of the muscle he gained while he was away. He's still in better shape than before he got injured, but he's pretty much just skinny Ambrose again, only with a beard that makes his face look puffy and hair that is somehow even less unflattering than the thinning mop. Throw in taking one of the most intense promo guys in the business and have him cut promos like he took a fistful of antidepressants and you've got one of the biggest botched returns in company history. I just wish he was buff when he faced Brock because Ambrose was skinnier than teenage me in that match and it ruined it a bit for me

I think that depends on what the follow up is. If he still ends up feuding with Jericho, having a pot plant with a name and having that weird cage match, it may not have been all that different.
