I'm not really saying they're trying to keep him from AEW, I just mean that WWE has the means to just kind of keep people on without caring or doing anything to use them, and that factors have led to that increasing from the scattered handfuls from past years to scores of people nowadays. Whatever the reason they're not using him is, he's pidgeonholed in WWE to a role that simply does not exist in their current product, and that while I'm sure he would love to see higher than that role, he's also not even being used in that right now. I can see the man wanting to get away just so he can actually do the thing he's been chasing the dream of for so long, because nothing is more disillusioning than finally finding your place, getting over, being a big deal, and then getting shelved for no good reason and having everything stall out for no good reason. Dude can't even be happy just to be there because he isn't even there. Didn’t he get hurt pretty much as soon as he showed up on the main roster? Seems like some bad luck hurt his momentum more than anything. Far as I remember, he was only injured August of last year. Dude was pretty consistently on TV in the early goings, ran a feud through Backlash with Aiden English and then just kinda fell through the cracks as people on Smackdown do.

My booking's gone cold I'm wondering why I went to work at all The ten chants cloud up my reception But I can't win at all And even if I could, it be on Main Event. The AEW poster on my wall It reminds me, that it's not so bad It's not so bad

What's "Negative" Ten doing in AEW?
What's "The Imperfect 10" doing in the Impact Zone?

Can't fault the guy for wanting to get more ring time. The roster is so packed, so his opportunity likely wasn't coming anytime soon. I hope more people follow suit. If you're happier taking indy bookings than you are collecting checks to sit at home, then go for it.

It’s something that happens a lot in sport, especially football where people left on the bench usually try and find a way to move from their club to somewhere else because it’s all well and good being paid a tonne of money and regularly getting to match shape but if you’re not actually doing the thing you’re paid to do on any kind of consistent basis, there’s no real point in being just content with the job.

Wasn’t he still working house shows? If so, he wasn’t just sitting at home. If he just wants to wrestle, he is wrestling several nights a week in front of large crowds, so it is definitely about creative and being used on tv.
He has been hurt, he even tweeted about making his return last week.
If he was just not being used for no reason and not even on the road, I am more sympathetic.

Dillinger vs MJF for Cody's best friendship.
Feud ends when Marty Scurll's ROH contract ends and he beats the piss out of both of them.

The only noteworthy thing of his WWE Career is being 1 of only 2 wrestlers to wear their Entrant Number on their ring gear in the Royal Rumble. The other one is Baron Corbin, who wore #13 in the same Rumble.

i don't blame him. He was over as f***, and Smackdown booking refused to do anything with him.

i don't blame him. He was over as f***, and Smackdown booking refused to do anything with him. I'm hesitant to say that they refused. In a sense, that's almost charitable. What actually happened was that they did things with him sporadically. He proved to be over, more often than not, and often quite loudly over, and then they just went back to not using him. It's like how Gallows and Anderson literally said 'the fans are sick of the same three teams facing each other' and since then we've either had the same teams facing each other or we've had an entire division handed over to Shane McMahon as opposed to letting underutilized teams wrestle for a week. Or it's like how, in the first episode of the post-draft RAW, we had noticeably different camera work and then it was back to normal the following week. Or like how Smackdown, in 2016, would open with a pre-credits stinger to set the tone. That didn't last. Point being: it's wrong to diminish the wrestlers when even WWE would agree, tacitly or overtly, that they're wrong in how they book talents. They just don't care. They can afford not to care. But there is every indication that they're aware of complaints the fans have. They'd just agree. And shrug. At best. But they knew and they damn well knew Tye had a valuable role to play.

From what I can find he didn't have a match between Oct. and Feb. He did have an injury that required surgery but he seems to have been cleared to return in Dec.

Tye is really, really good. The Orton matches, the AJ matches and the backstage segments with Truth from last year (where he played the straight-man perfectly and really played a significant part in getting the Truth-Carmella pairing off the ground) show how good he still is.
He's gotten himself tremendously over, has a connection with fans, and is by all accounts tremendously liked.
I think he winds up in AEW. Cody said in multiple interviews following his WWE departure in 2016 that his one his absolute favorite WWE feuds was his with Tye when they were in developmental, and that the way he'd return to watching the WWE product is if they put the NXT title on him.
I also think he could make a huge splash in ROH right now. Over character work with the ring skills to back it up is a recipe for their biggest attractions.

To echo what others here have said, he's smart for realizing that he's been overshadowed by the incoming talents, and wants to take a chance at making a name for himself outside of the WWE. If he's got an in with AEW due to his friendship with Cody, by all means, go for it.

Don't blame him at all. Yeah, he probably never was going to amount to much (although he was putting on pretty good work in NXT that should have led to a lot more there than it did) but at the very least he could stand to be given some TV time every now and then. But nope because they're awful at time management and have way too many people.

There's just not enough spots for who they have and it's only going to get worse as more signings happen and more guys go to the main roster. Anyone wanting to bet on themselves and try the indies... man I get it.

I’m saddened but not surprised. He was developing such a following in NXT circa late 2016/early 2017 that I really thought they were gonna put the NXT belt on him.

As a wrestler he's really, really good. Some of his nxt work was cracking. I never got him as a character but he managed to get a number over so must be doing something right.
Could well be AEWs sleeper hit.
