Hux went out like such a bitch and his reveal as the mole was hilarious gah, Hux was one of the most interesting parts of the movies to me, before this one. He was a sniveling little asshole, but he was a better leader than Kylo and he knew it. Kylo just was on top because he had the Force. It showed this ridiculous hole in the structure, connected to Sith philosophy, where the biggest bad-ass is on top regardless of whether they'd actually be effective in that role. Hux was watching his whole enterprise getting undercut and ruined because it was led by a guy who didn't care about anything but settling his own personal scores, and he couldn't fight it because it was a philosophy he bought in to... but it was being exposed to him as stupid. And then here, well... I guess we have to establish that general guy who, uh, was working for Palpatine and against Kylo the whole time? ? Ah c'mon, that was General Whatshisname. Totally important, just like Rey's dad Steve Palpatine. You know Steve. He was always around. Good ol Steve.

It's also VERY clear they didn't have this trilogy mapped out from the get-go. I mean I guess you could say that while watching Last Jedi as well, but man.
Like I don't believe for a second that Rey was always meant to be a Palpatine or that bringing back the Emperor was even a thing back in Force Awakens.

Although midway through the movie I was afraid she was gonna straight up be a Palpatine clone, so at least they didn't do that haha.

Close friends of mine that are as big of Star Wars fans as me (and who like me also loved TFA and were turned off by TLJ..) are telling me how much they enjoyed it. So there’s that at least I guess.

It's not a bad movie by any means; there's stuff I like about it, there's just a lot I don't. But eh, no big deal.

I wonder what Finn was going to tell her? They kinda forgot about that.
Also, Space Horses, lol

And was there a sale on lightsaber effects that I missed out on because Rey was going trigger happy with that thing.

I guess Force powers skip a generation sometimes, cuz poor Steve Palpatine (yep gonna keep calling him that) didn't have em I guess? I mean otherwise why did grandpa not just try and use him instead?

My close star wars fan friends haaaaaated it. They also liked the last movie, so there's your pattern. Yeah. Seems to be the case. One just told me how much she loved it and that it even made her cry and that’s really sweet to hear. I honestly can’t judge it until I’ve seen it (and I’m reserved to wait for redbox/Disney+ at this point) but I also honestly can’t deny that all the external stuff has superceded my want to watch it. Even if it sounds specifically designed to appease to my palate. I think that’s part of it: I’d rather they’d have stuck to their guns after TLJ instead of drastically course-correcting. I mean, what kind of a hackneyed trilogy will it come off as? And I’d say it’s fair-game to judge it as a trilogy, as opposed to individual movies, because that was always the design of it. They’ll make all the $$$$$$$$ but Its truly astounding what a shit-show the development and behind-the scenes has been. It grates me more as a consumer, that was originally happy to hand over my money, than it does as a big Star Wars fan. But I’m happy it’s brought happiness to my friends and a certain sect of the fandom and i more than understand the part that feels betrayed or underwhelmed. And I still haven’t gotten my damn Baby Yoda plushie yet, damnit.

He felt like it was just pathetic and cowardly that the producers had changed over, and he shrugged and was kinda like, "This is our reality now, horrible yelling people on Reddit run pop culture." One thing I gotta say, though? The CGI in this movie (and all Star Wars movies) looks absolutely FANTASTIC. Every other blockbuster I see, it looks awful. What the hell is going on? Why do these other big budget franchises like Marvel stuff look like silly little cartoon people running around, but Star Wars always looks great?

I certainly don't feel betrayed or contemptuous, but I do agree with your friend's point. Screech loud enough on the internet and there's a good chance studios will try to appease you, no matter how shitty the things you're screeching are. As I've said already, rather than simply being a big "f*** you" to Last Jedi, this movie feels like it's trying to please everybody, which you just can't do when there's so many groups who want different, wholly incompatible things. It's a disjointed mess of a movie, though yes, it is an extremely pretty one.

"Rey is Palpatine's granddaughter" is literally some shit you'd expect in a Star Wars parody. No need for Spaceballs 2, we already got one.

Back in the day it would be 1000 people from the south writing letters about a gay person or an interracial relationship on TV. And the network would assume 1000 letters meant 100 million people and back down so its really just a new technology version of that. Though they used to assume most people were too lazy to write so 1 letter meant thousands felt the same way. Now with the ease of the internet you can assume the thousands of losers crying Woke=Broke dont really represent millions.

It felt like many scenes were directed by someone trying to make fun of it. 4/10 is the highest I can go, just really bad for me.

Saw it again this evening with the wife. Definitely liked it more this time around. Caught a few little things that I missed at the early morning show yesterday.
I like how the trilogy played out.
7: Look at how much love we have for the OT. 8: Let the past die. Kill it. Move on. 9: Move forward, but remember and learn from the past.
I’d be willing to bet that over the next five years, comic book creators and novelists will have a ball filling in the gaps in this movie and its predecessors and I’m genuinely looking forward to it.

Also I will say it's not unreasonable/wanting to have EVERYTHING explained to have even a little bit of rationale for Palpatine being around. The last we saw of him as the Emperor decades ago (both in reality and in universe) he was tossed down into a reactor of a space station that then blew up in space&then wreckage crashed to a planet below and he's never been hinted to have alive (both in reality and in universe) since.
You don't have to have an hour showing his escape etc, but even a line of dialogue about it isn't unreasonable.
Now if there'd been even a hint of him being around in say Force Awakens, something as simple as mentioning that there are rumors of a cult to him or some such I think you'd get a pass there. As is though, it's one thing that made really clear there wasn't a plan for How the 3 movies were gonna go from the outset. Pretty clearly an audible once they got rid of Snoke and didn't actually want to have Kylo be the big bad.
JJ and Rian both share some blame there I guess, but the main blame falls on the higher ups not insisting on having a plan they stuck to all the way through from the get-go.

The only reason I didn't walk out on this film is because I am still recovering from leg surgery and didn't want to walk down the steps from my seats way up high in the dark.
This film was a train wreck. I probably have every form of cancer known to humanity now from watching it.
So:
WHEN was it ever mentioned or even hinted at that Palpatine ever had a SON let alone a granddaughter? WTF did his son come from!?!?!? WHO was the mother!??!!? Why didn't the Dark side powers pass to Palpatine's son? It would have been a lot easier for The Emperor to just possess his own SON than track down and chase his granddaughter. WTF!!!!
So Leia was basically a trained Jedi this whole time?!?!? WTF!!!! I mean I guess it explains the flying through space thing from the last movie but still..C'MON MAN!!!
If C3P0 was not permitted to SPEAK THE FORBIDDEN SITH LANGUAGE....why the f**k didn't he just...oh I don't know...WRITE IT DOWN!!!!! Or hey here is an idea....have C3P0 just GUIDE THE FLEET TO THE LOCATION!!!!!!!!!!! You do NOT have to talk to convey information!!! WTF!!!!!!!!!!
Oh so now Jedi can RAISE THE DEAD!?!? WTF!!! I get the healing thing, but RAISING THE DEAD!?!?!? REALLY!?!?!?!?!
So in the space of a few hours Lando manages to raise the largest fleet ever assembled in the history of the Star Wars universe!?!?!? WTF!!! And he manages to lead that fleet into the system that was, to this point, impassable unless you had the specific co-ordinates and even then required skilled pilots to do it AND the entire fleet jumps out of hyperspace IN PERFECT BATTLE FORMATION right on top of the Sith Fleet? AND IT WAS HAMMERED HOME THESE WEREN'T MILITARY SHIPS BUT JUST ORDINARY PEOPLE WHO HAPPENED TO HAVE SHIPS THAT WERE ARMED....WTF!!!!!!!
I have to stop now because I will be writing all day.
Thank God for The Mandalorian.....
