Britain clearly wants herd immunity. In itself not a terrible thing its the natural default in virology and all countries are going to have to attempt it at some point but Sweden's experience shows trying to rush it leads to a high death toll (for losing that gamble the next Swedish elections and general public sentiment over there are going to be very interesting to watch). I feel Johnson's hand as been forced as the country is simply going to run out of money soon and they won't be the last, the G20 really needs a common finance policy to allow bulks of people to remain home for several more months as we try to bring it about in stages.

the big problem with rushing for herd immunity is the same reason the lockdowns and the talk about lowering the curve.
Not overloading the hospitals.

Going for herd immunity when there aren't even viable treatments for the symptoms beyond "stay home" is the worst idea. Not to say it isn't a solution down the road, but save that for when there is a vaccine.
Doing it now is just going to raise the case and body count.

Herd immunity was the default response to smallpox for centuries by deliberately exposing children to a strain of lower (but not 0%) fatality rate. Once it was confirmed that exposure to cowpox (which is mostly asymptomatic in humans) also granted immunity in humans was a massive breakthrough in modern medicine.

the big problem with rushing for herd immunity is the same reason the lockdowns and the talk about lowering the curve. Not overloading the hospitals. That's why any strategy of the sort must be done alongside a system that allows hospitals to adapt to any new surge in cases. A lot of talk about Sweden's lack of mandatory mitigation but, they didn't just say "Que Sera Sera" and that's that. No, they didn't go for a full lockdown but, they had a centralized response in their healthcare system that ensured that there were enough resources needed to not get overwhelmed. Which they didn't.

So there are videos of tube lines being packed to the brim on morning commutes.
It's like as though telling businesses to "actively encourage" people to get back to work will lead to said businesses taking advantage of that.

Same here. There's still so many unknowns with this coronavirus and I'm not going to risk my health dining in when even local places are doing curbside pickup. And honestly, I don't really see stuff like bowling or going to a movie theater happening for me either. It sucks, but I just don't trust that people will respect the guidelines or that companies will stick to sanitizing. We're seeing how fantastic beaches are going where people can distance themselves; how are we going to do this for places that aren't designed to social distance 6 feet? I agree that I probably won't be eating or drinking much in public until I'm damn sure everything is somewhat controlled. I'm pretty sure I'm losing my mind. The other night I had a dream that I was sitting in some nicer restaurant having a ribeye and a dark lager beer. It was one of those super realistic dreams. I woke up right as the meal was being delivered and I was absolutely irate with reality. If you see a black and white Willem DeFoe crying that you want steak instead of his lobster, then you’ll know you’ve cracked.

11 senior citizens and 3 employees at an assisted living facility nearby have tested positive.
Palm Beach County has been given the go ahead to enter Phase 1.

Sounds like more counties in PA are pushing to move to the yellow stage on 5/15. While PA has a high number of cases they are in the Philly and Pittsburgh areas. A lot of counties are pointing out that their hospitals have not been hit hard and pointing to how a lot of cases are isolated from the working community.
There are two sides to this. On one hand a lot of the letters being sent about opening up due seem to scoff at the elderly living in assisted living. But st the same time the yellow phase is opening small businesses and enforcing similar social distancing that is used at grocery stores and pharmacies, but offices that are able to have their employees work from home are still to do that.
I think the issue comes from some having the mindset that opening the state means acting as nothing happens

Of course, where I live the governor said if you don't want to work when things open you can be fired.

Maybe this is the wrong thread for this, but the way some artists and MLB are handling ticket refunds for rescheduled events is some bottom of the barrel, seedy shit. I've had 3 concerts this Summer postpone and had tickets to a couple of baseball games. I was told by Ticketmaster that they were waiting to hear word from the artists/MLB. I could use the money, but there's people out there who lost jobs who could REALLY use the money that are being shafted hard.

What an absolute omnishambles the UK government had been from the start. The confused mess if the past few days is going to force many people into unsafe environments and the infection rate shooting back up. They can't even get the announcements and supporting documents released at the same time.

Even following it from here, it felt like there were 3 different answers from three different people about what they mean by being with other people or if they can come around your house which, you know, is kind of important to have be the same between all avenues.

TO CLARIFY WEDNESDAY 13th MAY is the day for companies to start PREPARING to open back up, and that means setting up workplaces for SD and buying all those PPE, because they'll be a glut of them very soon ..... then on MONDAY 1st JUNE it's back to working conditions for those who can we are now in the third three week notice period in the UK AND THE MESSAGE IS STILL THE SAME as i won't be changing mine

British people should follow the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish approach.
Johnson has left England in utter confusion.

Looks like New York will start phase 1 reopening on Friday. This includes: -Construction -Manufacturing and Wholesale supply chain -Retail for Curbside pickup -Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing
Cuomo also noted however that only three regions are ready...none of them mine. Not surprising as my county had a slight increase in cases today.
