I started with Saints Row 3, so I don't mind that.
I just wish they'd let us put a longer skirt on a female Boss for once.

I’m glad to read that. I really liked 2, but it’s the style and tone of 3 & 4 that I prefer.

Yeah, my first game was 3. Loved the tone of it. Can totally understand where people who like the tone of 2 better are coming from, but to me that's too close to GTA's tone to base it off, and the Boss was basically a villain at that point and it kind of gave it a "None of these characters are worth caring about" vibe.

My first was 2, but I ended up preferring 3 and 4 a lot more. I liked SR2, but I prefer my Boss being a Puckish Rogue.

I mean, it makes sense to go with the more tonal shift style instead of the one considered “GTA-lite”.

The thing about Saints Row that atleast to me that was so sppealing was that it was the anti-GTA in that it was a series that never took itself seriously at all (and this was originally the developers philosophy)
I mean come on one of the weapons in 3 is a giant dildo for f*** sakes lol and you can run around naked , the insurnace game (greatest mini game in any game ever BTW this cannot be argued it is factual) etc
I am still willing to give this new reboot a chance to win me over but the scrubbing of the names like FRECKLE BITCHES! into just generic FB is a definet warning sign of things to keep an eye on with this IMO atleast.

I know they're trying to give it the Robocop III treatment.

It's fine to go back to 3. 4 seemed just a little bit over the top for me.

I think if they capture the chaotic tone of 3, but with more of the underground street gang feel of 2 rather than celebrity empire, it'll be a good mix. I know they have us starting again from the ground up in Steelport, but that's undercut slightly by the big old purple Planet Saints buildings everywhere.

So, I never played the first one, but I did put in hundreds of hours over 2, 3 and 4, and also beat Gat Out Of Hell (didn't play that one near as much).
3 felt like the sweet spot to me; the harder edge of 2 reduced in favour of yet more absurdity and without the less interesting virtual simulation world of 4.
After 4, there very much was a question about where to go, they'd literally got up to the presidency and planetary war level. Harder and harder to keep escalating. Either a major nerfing of things or a soft reboot seemed the better option.
So the theory is good. But, I thought the first trailer was godawful. Yet, the second one with a lot of gameplay shown seemed better.
I'm still really on the fence. It's not like the characters beforehand were major three-dimensional people, but they were the same people through multiple games that did alter and you just spent major time with all of them and their struggles.
Going back to square one with a new group, well, no wonder that blank slate can be off-putting right now. Would you like Johnny Gat as your wingman, or Steve Urkel and Shirtless Doofus?
Keeping an open mind. But not convinced to lay down my money for it yet.
