The answer to this question, twice, for me is the Ultimate Warrior.
1996: WCW is running away with the ratings on the strength of former WWF stars like Hogan, Hall, Nash, and Savage, and the Warrior is signed to an absurd contract and very obviously brought in to be THE guy to turn the ratings tide. The vignettes for his return built him up as a returning hero, he squashed one of the company's biggest up and coming stars in HHH at Mania, had one of the WWF's worst PPV "matches" ever with Goldust, had a match on RAW with Isaac Yankem, feuded with Jerry Lawler while wearing a baseball cap and being a weird regular guy version of the Warrior, and then got into a another contract dispute with Vince and was gone.
1998: WWF has started to stem the tide of the Monday Night Wars on the strength of the fledgling Attitude Era and Stone Cold Steve Austin. WCW panics, and the Warrior is signed to an absurd contract and very obviously brought in to turn the ratings tide. Vignettes promoting his return built him up as a conquering hero, and he's immediately thrust into the absolute top of the card. One 27 minute promo and 3 matches later, and he's gone.

And still referenced the gimmick with mannerisms like holding the mic like a wine glass while saying the gimmick wasn't him It was stupid. It is still the quickest I have seen someone lose a shit ton of goodwill very fast THEN came the Liberace gimmick....... Yeah. Some people shouldn't be left to their own devices There were a few gimmicks in quick seccession that apparently the wrestlers themselves came up with the gimmick in WWE and Vince said no... that you look at and go... Yeah, I can see why Vince turned this idea down, and it wasn't because he was jealous of how creative you were.

You can put Thunder Rosa in AEW now. Although that is far more on Tony Khan's ineptitude than her So going from a YouTube show & her own indie promotion to being on national TV pretty much every week as a top babyface constitutes a flop? Not sure I follow on this one.

I remember watching that Hogan vs. Warrior match at Halloween Havoc 1998 live and it was a f***ing mess. And then the feed cut out just as the Goldberg vs. DDP match started lmao.

The weird butterfly effect thing of that Warrior run for me will always be the fact that he insisted on having a trap door to appear from, and that was the beginning of the end for Davey Boy(who, to a lesser extent, fits this thread both in 1993 WCW and in WWF in 1999) when he blew his back out getting slammed onto it and relapsed on his pain killer addiction.

By Promotion:
WWE: Sin Cara. Biggest draw in the world into complete jobber. A combination of his own fault and the fact that WWE is horrible with non-English speaking talent. And honestly, isn't that great with styles outside of the WWE style.
AEW: Jay Lethal. If there was any former ROH champion to get, it wasn't him. And the lack of results prove it. Bandido, Gresham, hell, even Dalton Castle, would have added more to the roster.
WCW: Bret Hart. Not gonna explain that.
TNA: Aron Rex, but special shoutout to Tito Ortiz

Killer Kross and Scarlett in WWE. Ehhhhhhhhhh, they were fine in NXT until Adam Cole delicately snipped Kross's balls off with his "you know how they make me a big deal?" promo. But even then they were salvageable and were doing okay. Then... hashbrown justmainrosterthings.

It was people not caring about Kross that lead to Cole sniping at him.

He's another Bobby Rude: Great when he can be the big fish in the small pond, but never a real chance of getting over as a big star.

Kross is a lot like Brian Cage where Lucha Underground's unique presentation style benefited him a lot by covering up his weaknesses.

Funny thing is WWE is the only place that tried him as a main guy (I mean I guess Lucha Underground kind of did but he barely wrestled). Everywhere he's else he's been a heavy for someone else. And he's good in that role. But he has never been a main eventer till NXT

Yeah like Elijah Burke pitched Da Pope character and I think he did a house show with it but it never got anywhere and TNA he showed they missed on that. Then you get shit like the Liberace gimmick which….. I still want to know why he thought it was a money idea

And playing to your strengths will get you a lot more mileage than trying to force someone into a role they aren't fit to play.

I enjoy him as an act. His best asset is character work. But he is a guy that can be really over as hired muscle or tag Him and Moose I was really looking forward to in Impact before everything happened
