I very much doubt it’s a one year deal. The only time I recall them doing such a short-term deal was for Goldberg in 2003-04 and with all due respect to Cody he’s not Goldberg. It’s not in WWE’s interest to give someone this much hype, a massive debut at Wrestlemania and put them over one of their top stars if he can leave less than a year later and take that momentum elsewhere. And Cody doesn’t need to use Scott Steiner mathematics to realize his chances of getting a world title run and such drastic go down if he’s only committed to one year. I’d be shocked if it’s anything less than 3 years. They offered the Bucks a deal with an opt out clause since they were hesitant about being used correctly. Doesn't mean they would offer that now but it's a possibility. I personally doubt he signed a one year deal but Cody shouldn't have signed for more than two years in my view. Both companies are due for huge rights increases in that timeframe and he'll be worth a lot both for an AEW return and for WWE wanting to avoid that.

They also offered that deal to the Bucks at a point in time Vince was convinced AEW wouldn’t last 6 months and that NXT would stomp them. I don’t see any way in hell Vince offers that now, their preferred contracts are now 5 years.

None of Cody's WWE themes are going to pop the crowd, so I hope for his sake he can use Kingdom.
I actually think it's the right move to debut him at Mania. It will get a bigger reaction since it's going to be smark heavy, and the surprise element will make it mean more rather than it being his 3rd or 4th appearance since returning.

I'm really curious about the 'Mania reaction. It's going to be heavy smark territory, and while there are diehards of both promotions, you have to imagine a significant amount of people in attendance at 'Mania are just big wrestling fans. A lot of them likely went to AEW shows the last year or so booing Cody with that 00's Cena/10's Roman heat.

But six months, a year from now when him being back in WWE space is normalized? There's a chance people grow tired of him again but I feel WWE fans are much more tolerable and forgiving of things they don't like than AEW fans.

I really think the crowd won't care THAT much after mania. Which brings up an interesting case, and maybe a clearer picture that the smark/internet fan and the casual fan both in fact exist and have separate tastes.

I'm assuming Vince isn't just gonna ignore Cody was in AEW while on air(like he does with other talent with other companies). He would be passing up the opportunity to brag about sticking it to AEW by swiping one of their top guys.

If it's Cody, fresh after beating Rollins at 'mania and with Kingdom as his entrance music, they will care.

I really think a lot of the WWE crowd don't watch AEW very much. I think Cody will benefit from a good pop at Mania but he's also going against a guy in Seth who is starting to get face reactions himself. He'll be fine for the first month but he'll need solid booking and really reinvent himself pretty quickly. I wouldn't be shocked if he was a heel after six months or so.

Lost in all of this, by the way, is the fact Brandi Rhodes went from having status and a perceived push in AEW, to following her husband out, and into... nothing, because WWE doesn't want to apparently sign her. I do get standing by your man and all that but plenty of couples work for each company or not together, still feel weird she dropped everything as CBO, unless she was as equally unhappy with her position or perception in the company... but they were sure giving her a lot of unnecessary TV time and really trying to make something work... to the pain of many, lol. I know reports are that some people were relieved she was gone, but I wonder if we'll ever know any further detail on all that really, and I wonder if Brandi's ever gonna find another home to wrestle if it ian't gonna be WWE as she's expressed interest in doing so. We're being denied a Brandi vs. Charlotte promo duel if so and I think that's unfair To heck with that, bring in Brandi as Charlotte’s manager. They’d be godlike and hilarious together.

Hell I'm an internet fan, and had to look it up. Again this is after mania, where the smark crowd will decrease.

I don't know I think the more recent version of Smoke and Mirrors ("blood drips from your camera...") is the absolute best theme he's ever had, and the crowd would pop for that. I've never liked Kingdom as a song though. Entrance music or otherwise. He'll probably have choir music, just WWE style, until it transitions into unintelligible noises and maybe a riff.

You know, I truly didn't know hardcore WWE fans were as insane as they were until I scrolled through comments here and there about this. My favorite brand of comments are the ones that say that "You shouldn't say anything bad about Cody for wanting to feed his family" and "This is like Jericho going to WWE in 1999. This will kill AEW!" As if Cody's family were living in poverty prior to him signing with WWE and as if Cody is remotely as talented/important as Jericho was/is. I can think of one of his matches in AEW that was great, and that was with his infinitely more talented brother.
AEW improves by losing Cody and Brandi. Pretending that this is MAJOR STEAL by WWE is laughable. I'm just happy that this means I won't have to worry about hearing one of his promos or watching one of his matches on a weekly basis.

Those are bad takes by the “hardcore” fans. Cody right now is definitely a much bigger star than Jericho was coming from WCW, though.
