There’s no such thing as a lie detector. It’s a fancy-ass heart rate monitor that can’t tell shit. And you'd be wrong. I would not.

Educating yourself might be a better comeback.

Educating yourself might be a better comeback. I have. If it was in any way reliable science, it would be admissible in court. The AMA doesn’t accept it, the US Supreme Court rejects it, science rejects it, the National Research Council rejects it, no one credible accepts it. That’s why it’s on a shitty talk show and not real life. I’m sorry a talk show worked you, but there’s no such thing as a lie detector.

Polygraph examinations are routinely used in investigations and background processes for a multitude of jobs. I've been polygraphed twice. While they are not admissible in court, they are found all over in "real life." Again, I would suggest you educate yourself on what a polygraph test actually is and how and what it measures, and you'll see it is more than just a "fancy-ass heart monitor".

And it’s still bullshit. The Green River Killer? Passed. Ted Bundy? Passed. Richard Crafts? Passed 3 times.

What will kids watch when they play hooky from school?
Honestly, this was trash tv but it was entertaining trash tv.
Maury deserves his time to just enjoy life. He's up there in age and needs a break from this.

And the Supreme Court allows states to decide on the admissibility of polygraph. Several allow them to be admitted if both the defense and prosecution agree. Polygraphs have plenty of faults and legitimate doubts around them, but to claim they are total bullshit and not found in real life is one dimensional and wrong.

Ok, you seem to be stuck on my wording of "real life", I'm aware police, security and military use them, that still does not make them useful science. They measure arousal, that's why the true believers insist on never using the term "lie detector" and always "polygraph". It measures nothing but your immediate reaction to a question. That's why there's always the "after quiz", where they go "You kinda wavered on the question of, "have you ever thought of another woman besides your wife", because everyone, kinda goes, "Yeah, I'd f*** Halle Berry if she offered", so then you lied. It measures your reaction to naughty questions and in no way measures a lie.

We have derailed this thread enough, though. We won't see eye to eye, so let's meet over it and move on.

Maury mainly dealt in DNA and lie detector tests, pretty sure they're not allowed to fake those. It'd damage the reputations of the people conducting the tests for the show. To be honest, I'm not sure lie detector tests have much of a reputation to damage. I don't know, it's not quite as outrageous as Springer or whatever, but I do still suspect a lot of it has been embellished even if they aren't outright hiring actors like Springer used to. Then again, I thought that about bits of Jeremy Kyle and look how that ended up...
It having to be real doesn't prevent the producers from telling the guests to amp up their behavior for ratings. It's very common. The crazier the guests get, the more attention on social media and views on Youtube they get. Word of mouth's a great marketing tactic. Someone who worked on Springer did an AMA years back, she said about 40% or so of that show was real. The rest was scripted. A lot of the shock talk shows shied away from real stories after a Jenny Jones guest was murdered post-appearance in 1995.

Considering how expensive a DNA test is, I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re voluntarily hamming it up so they don’t cut from the show by the producers

I don't think it was outright fake (Jerry Springer apparently was), but I also imagine the show producers encouraged the people to embellish the drama for the sake of entertainment. In the late 90s a friend was on 3 day time talk shows,Springer was one of them. What it is is the stories are real. They just pay people to be the parts. Like my friend,on Rowanda she was "My parents hate my boyfriend" then on Danny it was "I worship the tree in my yard as God". According to her one dude booked all the guests for all the daytime talk shows, besides Oprah. . So what about those "boot camps" they send troubled teens to? Are those legit?

In my head canon, Maury funds a science institute that does nothing else but test the DNA of children with indeterminate fathers.

Did they already play the last episodes and just take it off tv?
Here in LA, there’s just local news programming at Maury’s time slot.
I thought they would play reruns for a few years. Maybe even middle of the night with Steve Wilkos or something

I'll tell you right now, I've never been polygraph tested before, but I would fail one so badly. I don't like answering questions under pressure!
Also, how will we know who's the father without Maury?
