No, I think it made sense at the time, too. HBK/Taker is a much better idea on paper than Taker vs some dude 6 months off his debut. Triple H was being an ass about it but I think it was pretty easily the right call at the time and in hindsight. He’s still an ass. It doesn’t matter if it made sense in hindsight or at the time. It’s entirely besides the point. Oh yeah I'm with you there, he was an asshole about it. I was just confused by some of the comments here saying or suggesting that he was in the wrong in shooting the idea down at all.

Like, on that I’d say shoot the thing down before they wasted money on doing the first promo and hiring the guy. And also not have HHH in meetings at the time but that’s a different topic.

Hade Vansen could've still debuted and got a push.
It didn't have to be "UNDERTAKER FEUD!" right off the bat.

I love how almost all of Freddy's stories are basically "we put a lot of work into this and then Triple H was a dick about it so it got thrown out" That's how you know Freddy is telling the truth.

I still don’t understand why they couldn’t have tried to give him something else. If something doesn’t work, that shouldn’t be a death sentence to someone’s career. At least Kevin Fertig got a second chance after Mordecai bombed. It wasn’t a great career but he lasted a whole year in the gimmick and got a Wrestlemania match out of it. They never really gave Vansen a chance at all.

I have zero doubt this happened, and have zero doubt that Hunter was a straight up chode.
I do think age mellows you out, though. I also think that being in charge of NXT made him realize that "oh shit, I shouldn't bury ANYBODY because it makes the product as a whole look awful."
If you'll notice, post-NXT HHH suddenly had no problem eating pins.
I'm not saying that he's absolved of all of his sins because that's not up to me, but with experience comes wisdom and all of that.

One among the many reasons I wont ever buy the "Papa H" persona, dude is a politician and is as honest as a 3 dollar Bill That's why I've never gotten into the Papa H thing. Seems like people have forgotten a lot about Triple H's past these last several years when he was in charge of NXT. The selective memory has gotten even worse these last few weeks since he announced his retirement. He was an insecure douchebag that got in bed (literally) with the right person and also had the ear of the chairman who oh, by the way is also his father-in-law. He kept his spot by crushing everyone with his backstage political power and pull with the McMahon family and stayed on top for decades by doing so. I agree with Bret, 4/10. I loved the black and gold era of NXT and he HAS changed with the times, but OTOH the dude's still a dick and reading stories like this makes him losing all of his power hilarious to me.

Try to imagine William Regal poisoning another wrestler's chances with some jag comment to Vince.

Not like Brock Lesnar, who’s a physical freak of nature, has sold his ass off for smaller guys repeatedly before and it’s been awesome either. My favorite Triple H story is when he said that it would “not be believable” for a guy like Kurt Angle to take him in a fight. And one of the old timers (It might have been Pat Patterson or Gerald Briscoe) said essentially “oh, then go try and shoot take him and see how that goes for you.” And Hunter sat down and shut up agates that. You know the Triple H/Angle feud in 2000 had such a damp squib of an ending? Because according to Kurt Angle, Triple H didn't think it was believable for his character to have Stephanie betray him for Angle. Triple H didn’t want to do the angle at all because he thought no one would believe Angle could beat him IRL. Brisco told Triple H to try Angle then, and Triple H suddenly got real interested in his shoes….and that’s Prichard telling the story and he kissed Triple H’s ass every chance he got.

The success of NXT talent was a reflection on him directly so of course he wasn't going to be an uncharitable to them as he was to the talent from OVW/FCW/DSW.
Never forget kindly uncle Hunter's plan was to stripmine the indies, kill ROH then take the show on the road to do to Mexico and Japan what he did to British wrestling. The end goal was to harm non WWE wrestling as much as possible then pull up the ladder for indie talents so they can control careers from beginning to end, making wrestling worse for wrestlers and fans alike. If AEW and covid hadn't happened, we'd be discussing the WWE buying NOAH and counterprogramming against big AAA or CMLL shows, having signed away and re-gimmicked half their rosters.

Man, Hade Vansen is a dumb sounding name. It sounds like something you'd find in old Mad magazine movie parodies where the main character of whatever they were spoofing was Jade Danson or like that.

If I'm not mistaken, Jericho pitched the idea of Steph having an affair with him leading up to WM X8 and HHH shot the idea down for the same reason. H vetoed or put up huge fights to anything that would make his character look vunerable for a very long time. He was a super insecure guy for most of his run on top and it showed. www.wrestlinginc.com/news/2008/10/more-on-wwe-orders-for-hhh-to-not-look-weak-in-sd-vs-raw-512773/Back in the days. WWE send out an memo, ask reviewers to not show Triple H in a weak in screenshot. Triple H always been like this.

I mean to be fair Hade Vansen was pretty crap (he says based purely on a few bits and pieces from FWA)

I love the mental gymnastics going on in here that somehow Triple H robbed HADE f***ING VANSEN of an opportunity to be a star.
The dude wasn't good, didn't look good, and was never going to do anything beyond this 1 angle, where he was going to be 1/4 of a step above a jobber.
If Trips is guilty of anything here, it's only of being the one person who said the truth in front of Vince.

I don't think anyone's like "man Hade Vansen was really gonna be a megastar" but maybe one guy making an offhand comment in a backroom shouldn't lead to the summary execution of a person's career.

And whether he was going to be a massive star or not is really besides the point. He could have had a role somewhere else or gone to developmental to try something else, no need to f***ing fire the guy either for an off handed comment. Like, it wouldn’t be different if it happened to anyone on the card, John Cena to Heath Slater.

When you're so trusted by Vince you've had say in other talents booking since 1997, you should use your power over other people's careers responsibly, not saying they look like a gardener, call them bumblebee man, mock them on TV for losing muscle mass when they adhere to steroid testing that doesn't apply to you...

Yup, ok he wasn't going to be a star. So what, most people aren't. He wasn't given another angle, he wasn't used as 1/4 above a jobber, not even AS a jobber, he wasn't sent back to developmental till it clicked for him, there are people who've hung around there for years before putting it together on WWE time. He got nothing, just released at the earliest opportunity because 1 guy got in Vince's ear and made him completely worthless.
