What was up with this storyline at the time? I was not watching so hearing that Foley kissed Vince's ass for a heel Melina. Who then in turn, turned on Foley.
So what was the long term storyline here?
Next thing I know Foley is in a bloodbath with Flair at Summerslam.

I can’t remember the details, but Foley wrote a book about it (sort of, i think it also has a bunch of stuff about amusement parks and his love for Christmas), one of his later ones that wasn’t as successful but was really insightful.
The genesis of the book is he wanted to write about one specific angle and take the reader through it from start to finish — from idea to changes and evolution to final execution.
But IIRC (been a long time since I read it), it started with Mick proposing that he become the first person to ever volunteer to join the Kiss My Ass club, which he thought was a funny and different idea that he saw potential for a really good story that could be told. (Because who would ever do that and why, but also because who but Foley would ever do that).
I know the idea changed a good bit after the initial pitch but the book kind of takes you through all the twists and turns and I think some parts that got shot down and others added to make it how it really ended up. And I think a back injury along the way made some things change because of him being limited in ring, but, again, been a long time since I read it.
(I could be wrong, but I think it’s in this book that he also talks about the angle with HHH for the street fight with HHH at the Royal Rumble where he changed to the Cactus Jack character after Mankind was completely humiliated.)
EDIT: Looked it up to be sure and the book is ‘Hardcore Diaries.’

It was really bizarre since it was essentially a way for him to turn face after having an excellent heel run.

There was this whole weird thing of Foley and Melina just suddenly being friends on TV, and Foley and Flair having a feud, all pretty much entirely under the assumption everyone had read all of Foley's books and would just completely understand the reasoning behind it all.
Hardcore Diaries is a weird as hell book. Offhand he compares Melina's entrance to Christmas mornings when he was a kid, seemed super insistent on Terry Funk biting Vince's ass, and genuinely couldn't seem to understand why Cena / RVD would main event One Night Stand 2006 over his tag match.

What if Mick volunteered to kiss Melina's ass for Vince?

Hardcore Diaries was him going into detail on this a lot (and his Melina obsession).

I get what he was going for, between this and the Flair I Quit match, but I think that it didn't feel earned because they hadn't really done much to establish Melina and Mick having much of a connection.
Melina's one of those people who some people really wanted to go to bat for. Wasn't just Mick, either, as, if I recall, Bret Hart really talked up Melina as being a revelation, too. I thought she was a highlight of a down period, but also someone who got in her own way a lot, eventually blowing the spots she'd get.

I think my best fantasy booking came from this. I forget the exact time frame, but I wanted Nitro and Melina to turn on Mercury for being an ugly freak after his face exploded. Mick Foley, who also had been wrong by Melina, takes a newly disfigured Mercury under his wing and makes him the new hardcore crazy guy.

I wouldn't have hated that, potentially, depending on how it was handled. Sort of a proto-damaged Cody Rhodes.

It was the stupid remnants of a much bigger angle that was just dumb
He was trying to get Terry Funk a main event run in 2006
I love Mick but this was one of the worst periods of his career, and the beginning of him turning into at times one of the exact kinds of veteran that he hates

I hate to sound like an asshole, but Hardcore diaries reads as the first real obvious signs that Mick's brains were starting to become mashed potatoes.

I was surprised Mick was back yet again around this time. I enjoyed his brief return in 2004, particularly his match against Orton, but I think that should have been it. Not to say his matches with and against weren't great, but he was starting to push his goodwill that he'd built up, it seems. Mind you, he'd not hit TNA yet...

Mick has been one of my favourite wrestlers since WCW. Loved “Have a Nice Day”, and “Foley is Good”, but “Hardcore Diaries” was bad. Mick was coming off as miserable writing it, the pages where he’d talk about lusting over the Divas were creepy, I couldn’t even finish the book.

In 2001, Mick Foley wrote that no one wanted to hear Grumpy Mick in book form, and that was best edited out.
In 2007, Mick Foley gave us a whole book of Grumpy Mick.
The storyline made no sense, it cut off the Edge/Foley relationship which sort of did (and produced Foley's last great matches), and at one point they had Foley say on RAW: "Everyone knows me and Melina are old friends". No, they didn't.
I do like Mick Foley and think in general he tries to be a decent chap (compared to countless others in wrestling who don't) but yeah, the wise heads who pointed out he shouldn't be publishing stuff where he looks like a pervert with an ego weren't doing their job at that point.
And yes, Foley wanted Vince to give Terry Funk a big run, in 2006. Get yourself a friend who will look out for you as much as Mick Foley continues to promote Terry Funk.
