Hardcore Holly. In later years even if he was a jobber he usually always got a pretty good "respected veteran" pop but I don't recall him being over during the attitude era. I wonder how they'd like him now.

Unless you want to count his association with the Right to Censor, I don't recall Bull Buchanan being over despite being an agile big man. Despite their association with Shane McMahon, The Mean Street Posse came out to crickets. Bull for sure! The fact that Cena was able to escape working with him and not only become popular but a top guy speaks to John's talent. Bull was one of the absolute worst. His lack of talent shined on those he worked with. I think he was a Jim Ross guy as he always tried to mention him but the best he could do was "his momma named him Barry but his friends call him Bull." Time after time after time he was repackaged and still was awful. It wasn't a case like Bob Holly or Bradshaw or Godfather where their talent came through given the right gimmick, Bull was just not talented at all. Also, they miss the Attitude Era by a few days but Furnas and Lafon wouldn't have been over if they had stayed.

Just Joe, Essa Rios, Marc Mero, Droz, Raven. I think Steve Blackman was over enough for a midcard hardcore guy but he's definitely a guy people like a lot more now in hindsight than they did at the time

With The Acolytes beatdown and burying them on commentary, WWF made sure The Public Enemy weren't getting over.

Savio Vega was about as over as a fart in church. At least stateside. Seems after his first babyface run all he did with Los Boriquas was fight Crush and the bikers every damn show. Of course he’s gonna flop with no direction.

To add to this thread, Jeff Jarrett comes to mind. At least until he got a haircut and ditched the Country Singer gimmick. Even then, it mostly came from his association with Debra and a maybe Owen Hart as well. He wasn't over on his own until the spring/summer of 99 after Owen Hart died and became IC champ three more times. His misogynistic character and feud with Chyna really amped up his heel character.

William Regal with his "Real Man's Man" gimmick. It also didn't help that he had drug problems at the time. Billy Gunn as a solo act. Even winning the King of The Rock, feuding with The Rock, and having an intense match with Triple H(all in the summer of 1999) didn't make him stand out. He later went back with Road Dogg and DX a month later. When he came back from injury in late 2000, they tried to push him as "The One" and gave him an IC title reign, but it still didn't click. It's a damn shame too. Gunn has the look and wrestling ability, but it never resonated with fans. I would chalk that up to poor mic skills. He did have a kick ass theme song in both his single runs though, but that wasn't enough to get him over. I actually liked The One although admittedly it was mainly because of his awesome 90's sitcom entrance song. As far as him not being over it reminds of that Survivor Series 2001 Immunity Battle Royal. It ends up coming down to Billy and Test. Billy slaps his leg to signal he's going for the fameasser and the crowd completely loses their s**t to the point where even Billy looked surprised. Then Test big bootted him out to win the match.

I wonder how they'd like him now. I find it funny that the general idea of Hardcore Holly likely getting that as his catchphrase was "Well he's southern and Toby Keith is southern and he's kind of a big deal right now. What's a popular song Toby Keith sings?"

My first thought when I saw this thread. He would have fit better in WCW before Russo arrived.

Maybe they were cheering because they thought the match was going to be over.

Oddly the times I saw him live he got a pop. Not a huge one but he did get a reaction.

He was from Alabama and he talked with a southern accent so unless Bob actually told them there wouldn't be any way to tell.

Oddly to my ears he never sounded real southern. But that might be cause I have lived 90% of my life in the deep south. Got family and friends that I doubt people from outside the area would be able to understand.

I disagree with a lot of these. They seem more like "who wasn't over with the IWC" than who was over with most fans. But, to each their own.
