So, I always thought Mr. Blobby was like an actual kids show character overseas, but his mention in the Teletubbies thread and casual reference over wrestling twitter the past two weeks had me actually look up who/what he was.
Do I have it correct in that he was created for a hidden camera prank show as the star of a non-existent kids show that was meant to just be a one-off, but then people loved the prank so much that the character became an actual phenomenon with subsequent actual TV show and music releases?
But like, there's a meta level where he's a parody of dumb children's television? Like he's an Itchy and Scratchy or Terrance and Phillip of straight barely-comprehensible destructive silliness? And the actor who portrays him does it super dedicated and seriously so there's a level of respect for him? And in 2022 he's looked back on as a loved piece of 90s nostalgia?
Am I missing anything or way off about other parts?
Also, can anyone find footage of his original first prank appearance?

A truly horrific abomination that we Brits speak of only in hushed tones.

There was a Saturday evening TV show in the UK in the 90s called Noel’s House Party, hosted by (the then still popular TV/Radio personality) Noel Edmonds. One of the features of the show was the “Gotcha” awards, essentially as you said, a prank show. Blobby was the star of a supposedly new kids show which was actually an excuse to get celebrities on the show and make them think they were filming a show where everything went wrong and then Noel would appear and hand them a “Gotcha” award. When it was in these early days it actually wasn’t that bad but as the popularity grew they turned the dial up from 2 to one thousand and it was very quickly over-exposed and became very annoying very quickly to the point of within a period of about a year he was more hated than some of the most evil people alive. It’s become an example of something that evokes feelings of nostalgia and utter hatred. It also doesn’t help that Noel Edmonds also managed to perpetually become a bigger dick over a couple of decades.

Look... the early to mid 90s, where weird... we were in this weird nether region between Madchester, house and britpop, everyone was on coke and Noel Edmonds seemed like a viable mainstream tv star. Shit happened...

Although Mr Blobby was created for Noel's House Party (late evening variety show type thing) with that parody purpose, he soon just became a character that featured on the show regularly in other parts.
However he did also feature quite heavily on Live And Kicking, BBC's saturday morning children's tv block that had various live segments with celebrity guests/competitions/etc as well as airing cartoons and stuff, so technically did become a kid's show character. This is where stuff like that bit of him fighting Scott Hall came from.

I have a very fond memory of visiting the short-lived Crinkley Bottom theme park when I was a kid, which is probably more infamous now for the before and after comparisons of when it was open for business and when it had been abandoned for two decades (and looking like a deranged horror movie set in both instances): I'll be honest and say I found Mr Blobby funny here Jack Whitehall cowering in terror from Mr. Blobby is the only time Jack Whitehall has ever been entertaining.

It was a pre-internet pop culture meme. Something created to be intentionally unlikeable, that people started liking ironically, and then far more people actually started liking unironically, driving the whole thing so deep into the ground that Crinkley Bottom was consumed by the resulting lava flow.
