Having watched him in one of his crappy recent movies, this guy has NO charisma. It's like he's not even on the screen, he barely even tries.
I assume back when he was in shape and could actually kick ass, he had to have given more of a shit? Otherwise, how did anyone let him be the lead in a film?

As a connoisseur of cheesy action-spoitation, I have no idea what his appeal ever was.

Ties to people connected to the world of organised crime opened doors. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julius_R._Nasso#Legal_issuesHe was also a surface level interesting guy, someone who has a lot of tall tales, mysticism bullpoop and has just enough legitimacy to seem convincing to people who don't care to look into things, like the Tommy Tallarico of punching people in movies. He is a martial artist and he did study in Japan, but every other detail is hazy because he's a bs artist.

Steven Seagal's better films (Under Siege, Executive Decision etc) tend to work because of other actors or those behind the camera.

I think people only liked him ironically. Like, say what you will about Sylvester Stallone or Chuck Norris' personal lives, but they have a certain charisma to them that translates really well into action acting.
Seagal's always been a pretty terrible actor.

I assume back when he was in shape and could actually kick ass, he had to have given more of a shit? Otherwise, how did anyone let him be the lead in a film? There's always been a market for action movies starring guys who were legit martial artists with no charisma and no acting ability. Seagal was lucky enough to rise to prominence at a time when those types of movies drew decent box office numbers, which has allowed him to coast on that reputation as age and gluttony has eroded whatever fighting ability he had.

(Taken from youtube comments I have seen over the years)
Steven Seagal is 1/4th Cherokee, and by that, I mean he weighs one-quarter of a Jeep Cherokee.
The only thing dangerous about Steven Seagal is his cholesterol level.
Steven Seagal knows Akido, Judo, Karate, Jujitsu, Krav Maga, Systema, and so many other dangerous words.
Steven Seagal couldn't beat Bruce Lee, and I mean Bruce Lee in his current condition.

Out For Justice and Marked For Death are great but they're lower tier, like slightly better than American Ninja but not as good as Tango & Cash

Oh man, those poor 25-year old actresses who have to pretend to fall instantly in love with the hot and sexy Steven Seagal in every movie.

Yes. This dude came up using Aikido(which is super boring and massively useless) in movies when you had JCVD and others using kickboxing etc. Add into him thinking he’s a legit ass kicker and being a generally garbage human and it’s a wrap.
Also: never forget the time that Gene LeBell choked him out and made him shit his pants because Segal claimed that he could escape any choke that LeBell could put on him. LMAO

His lasting legacy to me and people I know is whenever one of us has a cold we ask if they've used Powdered Deer Penis to cure themselves.
