I think people only liked him ironically. Like, say what you will about Sylvester Stallone or Chuck Norris' personal lives, but they have a certain charisma to them that translates really well into action acting. Seagal's always been a pretty terrible actor. MIght have just been regional, but back when Segal's first few films came out he was HUGE. Every male 10 to 30 loved him. Never got why. But by then I had a buddy that was into Hong Kong action movies. So slow boring Segal wasn't much to me. Hell look at Jean Claude Van Damme. For about 5 years he was a huge star. But he actually had charisma and all that.

Just watch this dude rip on Seagal. Its really funny how Seagal has a pattern of whats in his movies. I tried, but holy shit that guy narrating that is grating. It did remind me how funny it is watching Seagal running.

My dad loved action movies. I don't know where he would have ranked Seagal but he was a fan of his movies. I vaguely remember watching them as a kid.
There definitely was that 'hey he knows martial arts' aspect when that wasn't as common among action stars. Plus he carried himself well back in the day. That said I was a kid in his heyday, so if I checked it out now I probably wouldn't be as kind.

Seagal is so lazy, I've never seen anything like it. Tom Cruise will climb a mile high building and hang off a jet taking off, but we can't even get ol' Steve to fight standing up.
He's not even 1/2 assed, he more like 1/10 assed.

Never got the appeal of Segal and thought all of his movies I have seen (including under siege which was only carried by Tommy and Gary) were terrible films. This guy can't act to save his life and has no charisma to even fall back on. I especially can't say I like him as a person as everyone here has already pointed out for the multitude of reasons. I think at his core too the guy is the typical bully who acts like he is tough and only pulls his macho act on people that have no training (though a lot people themselves seem to regard aikido as a joke but I digress) but backs off the second he is confronted by someone that knows how to fight. The stories about a Gene Lebell choking him out and Segal kept trashing Jean-Claude Van Damme constantly till Jean-Claude Van Damme confronted him at a party and then basically punking out Segal by challenging him for real to see who would win, are great examples of karma feeling real lol.

The only decent thing he's done is being impersonated by Will Sasso.

Best part of Under Seige, besides the end credits, was an in-her-prime Erica Eleniak coming out of a birthday cake.

Out For Justice and Marked For Death are great but they're lower tier, like slightly better than American Ninja but not as good as Tango & Cash Woah woah, do not talk shit about American Ninja. Except numbers 3, 4 and 5. American Ninja's fine but those Seagal films i'd definitely rate above it. American Ninja 2 is the classic IMO.

None of you would say this stuff to his face! That’s some HBK vs Hogan level of overselling right there. Oh, and to answer the OP, just by reading the title I could not tell if you were asking if he was always a garbage performer or a garbage person. Then again, I suppose it doesn’t matter since the answer either way is yes. He very much has always been garbage.

Seagal is considered one of the worst SNL hosts in the long history of the show and was so much of an unfunny headache they considered dropping him and just running a hostless show. They removed it from reruns after broadcast, he was that bad.

Seagal is considered one of the worst SNL hosts in the long history of the show and was so much of an unfunny headache they considered dropping him and just running a hostless show. They removed it from reruns after broadcast, he was that bad. Just throwing it out there, some lovable scamp uploaded the original broadcast of this episode to archive dot org. It's one of the few episodes where you can hear the audience audibly confused on when/where to clap when the sketch was over. I may be misremembering, but I think while it was pulled from ever re-running on NBC, this was the episode where the Comedy Central rerun was heavily cut and they added an additional taped rehearsal performance from the musical guest to fill up the time. (I may be wrong on this, I'm about 65% sure this was the episode it happened on) The only episode that was aired once and never rebroadcast in whole or in part in any form was when Milton Berle hosted, who did not get the concept of the show at all and it's among the worst trainwrecks in live television history. It never saw the light of day until Saturday Night Live began releasing DVD sets. Milton didn't get the sketch concept and delivered all of his lines right into the camera - and that's the best thing you can say about it. The abrupt cut-off of his monologue and subsequent on-air tantrum have to be seen to be believed.

Not enough love in this thread for Scott Adkins. Ninja is delicious flavorful piece of cinematic candy.
