Really I think the first true surprise entrant was Backlund in 2000. And also during the first brand split you had 15 Raw and 15 SD so little chance for surprise there.

Seems like a long shot, but Austin not being at Raw 30 makes me think he’s at least a possibility, which would be insane. I actually feel pretty confident in saying Austin's in the match and it's going to set up SOMETHING for Mania, which if you told me that a few years ago, I'd say you're nuts. If they somehow pull off Rock and Austin in the rumble. They need to have that moment where the smoke clears and they’re staring at eachother from across the ring

I think 08 was when it started becoming an annual thing. 01 had Honky Tonk Man and Haku. 02 all the returns were announced ahead of time. 03 through 07 everyone was announced although I think in 06 there was few as I believe Goldust was a return surprise as well as RVD who had been out for a while with an injury.

The signs are pointing towards Cody winning the Rumble and going over Roman at Wrestlemania.
There is one thing however that has me concerned about Cody winning the title, and that's the very likelihood of him being booked as the conquering hero type of babyface, much like how Cena and Roman before him were booked.

Iam fine with that, especially with the rumors of them splitting the world titles again

After so long of a heel conqueror, a take on all comers babyface is more than welcome

Two years of a dominant heel champion has me thinking that Cody being a fighting hero champion is gonna be a breath of fresh air.

And Cody does not need to be champion long
4-6 months is ideal in terms of time of reign and he could lose it and win it back later as I assume they will want him to headline a Mania as champion

Someone very nice has gone through since from 2005 to 2022 here. Before that, from memory - Backlund was a surprise in 2000. But so were the APA, the Outlaws, Jericho, Chyna and Hardcore Holly as WWE had promoted the Posse, Kai En Tai, Mark Henry and Mideon. Mideon never even did a run in. 2001 announced everyone except Drew Carrey (before the PPV started), Al Snow (iirc it was a surprise return but heavily hinted at), Honky Tonk Man, Big Show and Haku. 2002 announced everyone, but as I was ill, I somehow missed Mr Perfect was going to be in it. Lovely surprise. 2003 I believe announced everyone. 2004 did the same but did the old Test out/Foley in switcheroo. I vaguely recall hearing Greg Valentine was a surprise entry in 1994 (hence the huge pop, the first nostalgia surprise appearance) but I'm not sure.

So, no upset or surprising win as per usual?

So, no upset or surprising win as per usual? I think that that is the one flaw of the Royal Rumble concept. Knowing that the winner is going to main event Wrestlemania greatly limits the number of potential winners. If they did a surprise win and then that guy loses the spot sometime before Mania he kind of looks like a dork. They would really only need to do one surprise win to be able to cite that for years though. Hopefully eventually it will happen, but it won't be this year. lol

Unless they have a surprise one for the Women's match this year...which is possible as at the moment there doesn't seem to be a clear cut winner.

I remember Snow being announced on the website which I found weird as he had been off TV about a month selling injuries from Raven hitting him in the head with a cinderblock. They also had the Hardyz listed on the website in 2002 even though it was the same deal as they had been off TV selling getting destroyed by Undertaker.
