The story in the champ vs champ match was definitely that Kaito had gotten too big for his britches and cost himself by deciding to poke the bear that is Okada. You want the guy who’s basically the modern face of Tokyo Dome shows? You think the best way to get his attention and to get him to agree to a match is to attack him? Well, junior, you reap what you sow. The downside? I wanted a longer match that could’ve stood to feel a little more brutal. Upside: I do think this is part of a long term story for Kaito. But NOAH coming through with its booking for its younger talent is always a roll of the dice, so we shall see. Also, yeah, count me as one who got kind of verklempt when Muto called Chono and Tiger Hattori into the ring. Chono should be the Final Boss of Wrestling. MJF beats Danielson? Chono appears. Cody goes over Roman? Chono goes "GOD DAMN". Rhea gets her win over Charlotte? There's Chono! Dario up to shenanigans in MLW? Chono walks in the office. Can he be driving the Hummer into the office? Yes. Yes he can. But real talk, is Mutoh the last major star of his generation, at least for Japan?

Ultimo Dragon debuted like 4-5 years later and while still obviously a star, he isn't like Muta-level big, so even he probably isn't a great answer to the question. Not sure if anyone else comes any closer.

Ah yeah, good point, Onita's been retired multiple times, but he did still debut in the '70s. Also, I forgot until just now he's currently one of AJPW's tag champs, since they have two sets of tag belts.

Meltzer gave Okada/Kaito 4 and 3/4 stars.
Both Hiromu/Amakusa and Naito/Mutoh got 4 and 1/4.
