This thread would be way more interesting if was “Horses that weren’t actually horses” which is what I originally thought it was. The disappointment is real. The Young Stallions.

Rhyno was an interesting case where wasn't that big, but his intensity and Heyman's booking made him seem like legitimate beast.

They presented Roman as the big guy in The Shield. In reality, he's not much bigger than Seth Rollins. and Dean/Mox was pretty clearly taller than him.

Some of the mentions are outright ridiculous. Scott Norton not a hoss? LOL, he was a BEAST. Lance Hoyt? He's now Lance Archer and a murderous monster in AEW and NJPW.
Now there are some examples. The prime example to me is Judas Mesias in TNA, who was presented as a Kane-like monster, but he was barely 6' with lifts. Same goes for Rhyno. Abyss wasn't as much of a monster as well and his billed 6'8" were a joke.

To be a Hoss you either need to be built like a muscle tank (Bulldog, Scott Norton, Goldberg, Road Warriors) be very tall (Undertaker, Nash, John Studd) or be very heavy (Bigelow, Quake, Yokozuna) or a combo of those factors.
If you are too tall you enter giant territory see Khali, Andre, Reese, Gonzales & Big Show.
I always found Hercules to be a wrestler who was marketed as a hoss but was no bigger than Dino Bravo, down to the gimmick I guess.

Dustin Rhodes as Black Reign is sort of an example too. The whole “monster” presentation fell flat because as crazy as his getup was, his workdays was nowhere near its prior levels plus the only way he resembled a “monster” appearance was that his weight had ballooned. They tried to make him look massive by pairing him with smaller opponents but he still lost way more than he won.
Related note, please correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t Jericho deliberately gain weight in recent years because in Japan he uses a “monster” style?

Related note, please correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t Jericho deliberately gain weight in recent years because in Japan he uses a “monster” style? Dustin was still taller than most people in TNA, but yeah, the awful costume and him being out of shape cut his menace down. He looks much more physically impressive when he's more fit. As for the Jericho thing, yes, that was his reasoning during his time in NJPW, gaining weight because he felt it'd make him look more intimidating. He ended up losing weight and getting more defined when he quit drinking, so I suspect some of this was him rationalizing a beer gut, too.

Guys like Herc and Nikita were hosses in territories, where most of the roster was average sized guys, but the problem is when you build a roster of big, muscular guys, and somebody has got to be the smallest. The Road Warriors looked like absolute monsters in the AWA, but how small were they next to the Powers of Pain or even the New Age Outlaws?

He legitimately had a Shao Kahn-like presence in Lucha Underground as Mil Muertes, but that's also with LU being arguably the closest to a polar opposite to Land of the Giants-era WWF. As much as I loved his character, even in AEW I feel like the roster is comparatively tall enough that he just wouldn't have the same presence.

I think his presentation on WCW was sometimes kind of dull, but he was plenty credible as a guy you didn't want to screw around with.

I remember thinking that ECW Taz was a lot thicker than he actually was, thought that he was just short. Then he showed up in the land of the giants of WWE and he looked quite small all the way around. ECW Taz is probably my favorite wrestler of all time though. Tax in his prime was kind of a unique case. He wasn’t tall or muscular, but just looking at him you could tell he was a powerhouse; he just looked solid through and through, like if you punched him anywhere on his body, you’d hurt your fist. And particularly in his matches with Bam Bam you could see his stong he was, picked up a three hundred pounder and handled him like a feather..

This led me to the discovery that Wardlow is actually shorter than Shawn Spears.

I'd say Michael Elgin would fit.
