Yeah the “monster” or “hoss” is a staple of wrestling and always will be. But there have been cases of promoters trying to present a star as a powerhouse even though they physically really didn’t fit the part. Karrion Kross is about the same size as most of the other stars but on his debut in NXT he used a Goldberg/Warrior style to make it look like he was just so massive that he easily overpowered his opponents. Same for Ludvig Borga back in the day, yeah he was a huge and chiseled guy but nowhere near as massive as Yokozuna or Undertaker. Giant Gonzalez may have been really tall but he was actually very lanky-to say nothing of near immobile. What might be some other examples?

Nikita Koloff was pushed as a powerhouse hoss, and looked the part so long as he was matched with Ivan, Magnum, the Horsemen, or the Rock N Roll Express. BUT, put him in the ring with Luger, Sting, or the Road Warriors and he just looked like an averaged sized dude with an above average physique.

They presented Roman as the big guy in The Shield. In reality, he's not much bigger than Seth Rollins.

Davey Boy Smith was all of 5'10 and he was treated as one of the most powerful wrestlers in the WWF or WCW.

Crimson in TNA.
He was just a tall and slim guy with tattoos, yet they gave him an undefeated streak.
Bull Dempsey on NXT didn't have that much size either.

Roderick Strong in 2005 ROH is one of my favorite examples of a dude who's literally the same size as everyone else, but he's been designated the hoss. They never tried to pretend he was bigger than he was, which helped, but I swear, he's never been more interesting than he was then.
Miu Watanabe in TJPW right now is starting to rival that, although I agree with the podcaster who said that if you do the moves she does, you count as a hoss regardless of your size.

TNA always crowed about the size of Lance Hoyt, but all I saw was a tall, skinny guy with a tramp stamp.

TNA always crowed about the size of Lance Hoyt, but all I saw was a tall, skinny guy with a tramp stamp. He looked like Trinity's ugly sister. Heck, Trinity was more of a hoss than half the roster when TNA first got going.

TNA always crowed about the size of Lance Hoyt, but all I saw was a tall, skinny guy with a tramp stamp. The issue was one of presence. He's talked before about how working in Japan really raised his confidence level and that it'd been what held him back. Lance Archer is a fantastic example of a guy who matured as an act, sort of like how if you compare Lashley now to his mid-2000s self, and how it's night and day.

Except when against someone like Bigelow or Mike Awesome, Taz in ECW was kinda booked this way. I remember McMahon described him as a "sawed-off monster" in the Rise and Fall of ECW DVD.

They presented Roman as the big guy in The Shield. In reality, he's not much bigger than Seth Rollins. I think it's how others act towards them that plays a part in this. Kross is the definitive example to me because five guys acting like he was Brock Lesnar when he didn't have that size and his moves just didn't have that sort of impact is one of most ridiculous things I've ever seen in wrestling (and I've seen Russo booking and watch DDT). Cesaro is a similar size but never gets that reaction from oponents. Similar to Miu and not just for the swing, they have the power one-on-one but it's not like an Undertaker situation where they're monsters who can overpower multiple threats at once just through their size. They have to wear an opponent down to show their power. They're still vulnerable and aren't going to start no-selling offense. Roman is also in the Kross and Cesaro size bracket but he's more portrayed as having explosive power so to me it usually works there too but YMMV.

Davey Boy Smith was all of 5'10 and he was treated as one of the most powerful wrestlers in the WWF or WCW. Maybe he was? He did some displays of strength that borders on being stupidly strong, and was almost as wide as he was tall. Now, call me crazy, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Crash Holly fudged the scale and didn't really weigh 400+ lbs.

When I first saw Taz, I was shocked he was as short as he was. Pictures and descriptions made him look and sound enormous.

Davey Boy Smith was all of 5'10 and he was treated as one of the most powerful wrestlers in the WWF or WCW. To be fair, while he wasn't tall, Bulldog was able to lift guys like Vader and Mabel so he was one of the stronger people in the 90s WWF/WCW.

Scott Norton was another one who was hyped as ts behemoth but he never struck me as particularly huge.

In British Bulldog's defense he may have been the strongest guy on the roster at the time. He was only 5'10" but he was also 5'10" when he laying down. Guy was built like a refrigerator.

Amish Roadkill was treated like a hoss in developmental, thought of as a future monster for Taker to slay, and then management got a look at him and that was that.

The smaller hoss is honestly one of my favorite types of wrestler, but it's all about delivery and impact. When someone's moveset just works with it and they can show off a lot of strength and explosivity despite their size, it sells them in a reall neat way. Someone who's a bit short but incredibly wide throwing people around with suplexes and going toe to toe with someone towering over them will always get a pop out of me. Definitely more than some immobile giant who can't do anything at any speed but the commentators cream themselves over how big he is. Hoss credibility is something you sell as a performer.
