So it looks like he’s a face by narrative, but he’s also talking shit to the crowd. I could see him and starts doing a double turn (assuming starks is heel). Maybe be a heel for the MJF program?

Doesn’t really matter, he’ll be heel by the time the MJF feud rolls along. No doubt he’ll still have his contingent of fans, but I see MJF getting way better reactions when they’re pitted against one another again. I sort of can’t wait for that feud if I’m gonna be perfectly honest. Last time around, Punk had the high ground so-to-speak. Now? Oh boy. Gonna be interesting to see how hard/easy MJF takes it on him. oh, and I voted no.

Right now? Probably still leaning in depending on the city
But it really looks and sounds like he wants to be a heel when all is said and done. He's not endearing himself to many crowds and he is leaning into that very blatantly

It really seems like they're John Cena-ing it, where for all intents and purposes in the narrative he's the big #1 face while throwing out a few breadcrumbs for the people booing him where he's slightly heelish that probably won't ever go anywhere.

We spent all of Cody's run wondering if they'd listen to the crowds and turn him, not banking on it any time soon.

If the most heelish he gets is a snippy sports comment to crowds that boo him, nah, that's nothing. Dude did these same "heel" moves during the early parts of his AEW run and it was toward absolutely nothing. I'll believe he's a heel when he does something directly villainous and the story/commentary frame him as explicitly wrong for doing it. And I have trouble buying he's going to be working heel against MJF because it really feels like MJF only wants to be a face for fakeout purposes. Nobody really seems to be going in a direction that'd get that match happening with that alignment.

Rather than a straight-up heel, I'd like him to be a deluded heel who thinks he's a face. He could pull it off. There are signs of him already doing it.

Said in Collision thread I think it's more shades of grey than anything. Darby was clearly cheesing it up in his promo when saying he was teaming with his buddy. I think they're just going with Punk is an asshole some like him some don't.

If you accept that Punk is trying to be a less PG John Cena, it makes more sense. It is dumb and is going to backfire on AEW, but this is what they have chosen to do.

We spent all of Cody's run wondering if they'd listen to the crowds and turn him, not banking on it any time soon. The only difference here, is that Cody repeatedly insisted that he wouldn’t turn and didn’t really play into the crowd booing him. He just kept playing the earnest babyface through the boos. Punk, in the other hand, has played into the mixed reactions more often than not since his return.

"When and how I portray my gimmick, I'm consciously choosing to go against the majority reaction I receive from the live audience."

Yeah the guy willing to light himself on fire to get cheered is definitely a meta heel

Speaking of that
Like it or not Punk has pulled it off better than Cody...

Three of Punk's biggest feuds in AEW have been against faces. The only difference is now he's getting heel heat. His alignment is just "is CM Punk" and basically has been since the Eddie Kingston feud

(Don't get me wrong, I prefer him NOT doing that, but...)

Would love to hear all the other instances in wrestling history where the face would insult the local sports team in multiple cities.

With Cody it was in "so weird, it's entertaining" territory. With Punk it is in messy and boring territory.

Would love to hear all the other instances in wrestling history where the face would insult the local sports team in multiple cities. CM Punk himself in AEW every time he's gone to Long Island. Once in the MJF feud taking a shot at the crowd booing him, once when he came out for a match against John Silver in an Islanders jersey. In neither of those stories was Punk actually the heel, which goes to the diea that maybe just when a crowd boos him he takes the shot back at them, rather than that he's narratively being portrayed as a heel or even a gray character.
