I'm not skeptical of that report at all. I fully expect Rock/Roman this year and I can see Triple H using Punk's Mania match as a way to soften the blow for Cody. And that is still a big match but I absolutely would not blame him nor fans for being disappointed.

I see you and I mostly agree, but they literally tried to transfer the Yes chant to Big Show, wanted Bryan to remain in the Wyatt family longer and then even when they got him out, they had him lose the blow off. The Mania plans they had for the biggest star they had at the moment was a throw away match with Sheamus. Bryan might've been booked strong but he was still underutilized relative to the level of popularity he achieved.

Until they announce Rock vs. Roman at Mania with Cody out in the cold, I'm still going with Cody vs. Roman 2 as the main event this year.
I feel like WWE has to know about the jokes/memes, with Drew even mentioning it last week on Raw.

As long as Cody’s not losing a title match to Roman, he’ll be good. And the Punk match is probably the biggest thing he can be doing otherwise. Gunther winning the title from Rollins would be great too, although I wonder how they deal with the IC Title in that case. Also leaves Brock without an obvious dance partner, though I guess he can feud with someone on Smackdown like Orton.

Honestly, Seth's the one that gets f***ed over most in this scenario because he goes from a main event match with Punk to (presumably) getting mauled by Gunther in short order (especially if he's hurt). I still think Rock is next year, though.

Having Gunther fight injured Rollins kinda does Gunther dirty, because he’s not going to be able to really lay in his offense because he’s gotta protect Rollins’s knee at the same time.

The Rollins injury is not supposed to keep him out 10-11 weeks though. That’s all kayfabe, no? They’ll still be able to put on a great match.

Cody summed it up in an interview he just did...if he doesn't leave WM 40 with the WWE title it is a failure.

But if Rock wants the match at Mania this year, the story waits. Which would be stupid IMO. Rock can wait till Mania next year or summerslam to blow up within the first min of the match. They cannot afford to do Cody dirty again because who knows if anyone will care let alone if something like an injury derails either he or Roman if they wanna hold off on this even longer.

Wasn’t the Rhodes/Punk promo segment announced as happening on the next RAW before the Rollins v Mahal match where he got hurt? OK, sure, it could retroactively become something that leads to a WM match, but it definitely wasn’t something put in the show initially as that.

If we're to believe Justin Barrasso at Sports Illustrated, well, it may be time to break out those memes. www.si.com/fannation/wrestling/news/wrestlemania-40-card-is-taking-shape-and-it-looks-spectacular"Where does this leave Cody Rhodes? Multiple sources close to WWE Head of Creative Paul “Triple H” Levesque have indicated that Rhodes will not headline this year’s event, nor will he “finish his story” at WrestleMania. But there is still a new chapter to write with a marquee matchup to be had… against CM Punk." This feels very trap card to me. They wouldn't be heavily selling 2K24 on the Cody/Reigns rematch for this to be the outcome.

Even baiting people with "Oh well maybe we'll do it this way" is exactly the kind of tiring mind game stuff that keeps these conversations going. WWE preying on the anxieties of its fanbase in behind the scenes stuff and leaning on its reputation like this doesn't make the story better. Worked shoots and deception like this doesn't add to the show. Funnily enough, it was another thing that drove me away. Just tell the damn stories on your damn show instead of using stuff 75% of your audience don’t give two shits about.

Pretty sure we can chalk up that SI article as BS considering they fired everyone and is pretty much dead.

I probably should have used that LOL at the end to indicate I was not being serious. That is my mistake.

That is my mistake. I mean, just glad you don’t think companies just let people get fired and not finish any tasks because they’re extra assholes, that’s all. 😆

Maybe I’m wrong but I feel like WWE has been doing a pretty good job in swerving the dirt sheets lately. I really do like the idea of Gunther winning the rumble to be honest.

Yeah this either could be a switch that was made if Rock fully committed to the Mania match, or it could be fed to SI to throw everyone off the scent of what is actually going to happen. I imagine we’ll hear more from either Dave, SRS or others today.
