I said this in the Wrestlemania 39 thread last year. I'm not even a Cody stan, but I'm seeing red after tonight's finish. WTF. April 2nd, 2023. Kind of obvious, innit? WWE's booking of babyfaces in the past 15-20 years has felt less like "oh my god, yes, yeah, they did it, they won the big one at Wrestlemania!" and more like "ugh, f***ing finally, peas and rice, it wasn't worth all the drama beforehand." And that sucks. And it's not very fun to watch. And it's striking when the iron is stone cold. Even if Cody beats Roman clean in a 1-on-1 match for the title at Wrestlemania 40, my reaction will be muted because this shit should have been done last year. And I'm still not high on Cody like lots of other folks are. "Too little, too late" is a bad booking philosophy and a bad storytelling principle, no matter if it's wrestling, movies, TV shows, comics, video games, whatever.

I've been largely done with the bloodline story since they managed to turn one of the best Mania's in years into a wet fart and then followed that up with...an Uso bitching out and going crawling back to Roman because heaven forbid the destruction of the bloodline take anything less than a decade. If Cody finishes the story this year, cool. I stopped caring when he gave that promo the night after. Hopefully him winning might reignite something, we'll see. In the meantime, I got no problems with memes. The reason they exist is WWE's history as many have mentioned. Yeah, they've been a lot better, but they have a lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng run of terrible choices to live down. It's not like one right choice dissolves all that.

I've been meaning to go back and look at it and the search function here is a bit booty. I don't think I'll ever have a more memorable board moment than walking out of night 2 seeing women/children cry over Cody losing, guys start getting into full on fist fights about it and reading the thread just absolutely go nuclear at the same time.

thanks Damn, I was so salty, lol. Still am. oh i'm still f***ing pissed lmao. i can see the light at the end of the tunnel with Cody winning at Mania but I do think it won't feel as good as it would have last year. turns out almost everyone in there was right and roman didn't need the title this whole last year. also find it very funny how the specific people i cannot stand in the "real" sports section are the only ones hopping in that thread gloating at people saying YEAH ROMAN WOO YEAH URGHHGHG lmao while everyone else is bummed out.

I don’t care how salty I was, this year I’ve got things in perspective. Last year I said that Cody not winning was a booking decision that was going to haunt them, and *lord* did WWE say “bet” and proved me wrong in that regard.

Just give Cody the belt at WM and not make it a lame way and we're good. Should have been last year but hey we gotta work with what we got now. At the end of the day Rock shouldn't dictate what happens in a company like he's Zach Morris coming back to Bayside because he heard it was going to be sold and only he can stop it. Like, nah.
As for the Cody slander, memes and jokes I just chalk all of em up to anti-WWE/AEW extremists/people who want Cody to take an L because he left AEW. Since dude came back to the company people have praying on his downfall either silently or loudly. You even had dudes saying he was gonna be booed by now. Like I've said it before but that shit is lame and weird to me. I just keep it moving.

As it stands I can't figure out how they'll make it a bigger deal than last year but what will likely happen is that Rock is involved somehow and assists in putting Cody over even more. For us avid wrestling fans, would Cody just winning last year be more immediately satisfying? Yeah, I'd say so. For everyone including media purposes, us avid fans, casuals, etc., would Cody having Rock's presence by him as Cody wins the title on an anniversary show be an even bigger deal? Yeah probably! That tells everyone including people who only watch stuff like YT clips that Cody is indeed that huge deal. We all already know he is on fire but there might be that extra step to give him and prop him up even more.

It could be the "Rock endorses Roman" thing except it actually works this time in the form of Cody.

If Cody/Roman does happen, I can see them trying to do the same finish from last year but this time either Cena or Rock evens the odds and takes Solo out of the equation.

I really don’t want Gunther to win the rumble. It would be a deflating crowd reaction if it’s not Cody or Punk.

All this talk about who Cody is facing at Mania and I thought the answer was obvious since last year Rubber Chicken.

Idk, there were rumblings and reports that Randy Orton was going to win 2017 despite not being a clear cut tv favorite going into it, and lo and behold he ended up winning, so I can see it happening

It’s worth pointing out again that there wouldn’t be all this hand wringing about what to do if Cody has just won the title last year. Rock could have faced Roman with no title on Mania, or it even could be for the title, because at least Cody would have already had the belt by this point.
I know WWE continued to have a successful year and faced no consequences from the booking last year, but I maintain the storylines would have all been a lot better with the title change. As it stood the way they did it, this has been a year of just padding Reigns’ title reign with very few real title feuds set up.he defended the title only two times the rest of the year!

I've seen the "Cody has to suffer or else people will turn on him!" nonsense since last year... and that excuse is running thin.

I think they're now kind of interconnected. Cody's only pinfall loss in the company to date was at the hands of Roman. They did that face off to tease the match late last year. Roman is Cody's mountain to climb. Beating anybody else for the WWE Title wouldn't be the same at this point. Like, I find this subject really weird because it feels so obvious. If a Dragon kidnapped a Princess and the knight saving her was recently hurled aside by the Dragon's tail, is the Knight getting revenge on the Dragon or saving the Princess? The answer is literally both. It is more like if a second dragon steals the princess from the first dragon, you go after the second dragon with the princess.
