Has there ever been a low-budget sequel with the main expensive cast dropped that has actually been good? All I can think of is Lion King 2. It was a massive drop on the original one, but was still a decent enough film. If we’re talking animated, I enjoyed the Aladdin series

Addams Family Reunion which was a straight to video sequel to the other 2 films. The only actor who returned for it was the one who played Lurch.

Neither touched the first though.

The only thing I liked about the second Aladdin movie was Iago's face turn.

I will defend the "Death Race" sequels for what they are. Okay, technically, two of them are actually prequels, but still.
Also, believe it or not, there were sequels to "Never Back Down." The second one had a character from its predecessor return. The third one brought back Michael Jai White, who had a big role (and also directed) the second film. There is a fourth one, but I haven't seen it. I have seen the other sequels, though.

Undisputed 2
Sequel to Undisputed starring Wesley Snipes and Ving Rhames. The sequel does not have either man but Michael Jai white plays Ving Rhames character George IceMan Chambers.
And then the series becomea Scott Adkins series from then on with him as Yuri Boyka.

From Dusk til Dawn had sequels that no one asked to be made. I actually ejoyed the first sequel...is it anywhere in the ballpark of the first? absoloutley not but it is harmless fun....we don't talk about that 2nd sequel though.

After a few sequels, the star of the first movie may come back if their career didn't really work out well.

I didn't like the second one, but I didn't mind the third one. Then again, it felt like a retread of the original but set in the 1910s. The brothel concept wasn't really much different than the strip club. I might give the second one another chance, though.

Someone tried to get a Cruel Intentions TV series off the ground, and then when it didn't get picked up simply sold the pilot as Cruel Intentions 2, which also got a sequel. Cruel Intentions 2 starring Amy freaking Adams.

It was a massive drop on the original one, but was still a decent enough film. I don’t know if any have been great or beaten the original, but there have been a least a few decent ones. C.H.U.D. II: Bud the C.H.U.D. - This was supposed to be part of the Return of the Living Dead series, but the IP owner declined and the C.H.U.D. IP was cheaper to get the rights to. That’s why rather than the monsters we had in the original, it just has zombies. It’s a decent enough zombie movie though. Bachelor Party 2: The Last Temptation - No way they could get Tom Hanks to be in the sequel 24 years after the original. Still it’s a fun gross out comedy similar to others of its era (2008) and arguably better than most. Creepshow 3: Okay so Creepshow 2 didn’t have many returning actors either just because they’re anthology movies. But this fits the bill of this thread by being made years later at a fraction of the budget. It may be a little generous to call it decent, but it’s better than it’s reputation would have you believe.

George of the Jungle 2 outright says it right at the start of the film
"Studio too cheap to pay Brendan Frasier, so I George now!"

The Tooth Fairy 2 going from The Rock to Larry the Cable Guy was a choice….

Absolutely the first franchise I thought of Has there ever been a low-budget sequel with the main expensive cast dropped that has actually been good? All I can think of is Lion King 2. It was a massive drop on the original one, but was still a decent enough film. Hadn't seen it in years, but watched it when the Blu Ray boxset came out. The Lion King 2 is a shockingly good DTV Disney movie, probably the best they made when they were going all crazy pumping out DTV sequels The Tooth Fairy 2 going from The Rock to Larry the Cable Guy was a choice…. The real crazy thing is, in terms of pop culture relevance it really wasn't that big a step down when the casting was announced. The Rock was a punchline due to the whole Disney run, and Larry the Cable Guy was still pretty damn popular for whatever f***ing reason. How he became the big star coming out of Blue Collar Comedy is beyond me

Lion King 2 basically cribbed the story from Romeo and Juliet and then took away some of the stupidity so it makes sense that it was decent. After all, the first one basically cribbed Hamlet and it's one of the best animate films they ever made.

RoboCop 3 is sort of closer to the Predator/Terminator mould of the budget being there, but with a much lower-status star to replace Peter Weller. The Crow got three sequels, two of which were straight-to-DVD, with progressively lower-rent casts, plus a really cheap Canadian-made TV series. The new movie starring Bill Skarsgård may or may not buck the trend, but considering filming wrapped in 2022, it's supposed to be released sometime this year and almost nothing is known about it, I'm not confident. Starship Troopers has two low budget sequels, though Casper van Dien returned for the third movie. Robocop also got a cheaply-made Canadian TV series followup (that naturally didn’t have Peter Weller as Robocop), as well as a series of TV movies in 2001, also made in Canada. The 2014 remake (yes, also shot in Canada) was by no means cheap, but kinda disappointing nonetheless.

Has anybody mentioned "The Substitute" yet? I doubt the first film was that high in budget, but it didn't seem like it did well back in 1996. However, Tom Berenger didn't return for the sequels, but Treat Williams (RIP) starred in the sequels that were straight-to-video or straight-to-cable because I recall the second film debuted on HBO.

Do we count the Dick Tracy Specials that Warren Beatty made to prevent Disney from getting the rights to the character? They obviously have the star, but the budgets were, what? A pack of gum and the loose change in the back of Beatty's couch? Beatty actually went to the courts to ensure they were legally classified as sequels so he would keep the rights until the character becomes public domain in 2027.
Has anyone in the last 35 years given a shit about Dick Tracy besides Warren Beatty himself?
