Addams Family Reunion which was a straight to video sequel to the other 2 films. The only actor who returned for it was the one who played Lurch. Doesn't hurt that they got the legendary Tim Curry and Daryl Hannah to replace Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston. That's about as close as you're ever going to get to a lateral move in a direct-to-video sequel.

Yeah the movie was pretty average though anything with Tim Curry in it gets another star added by default.

I'm shocked no one has mentioned the obvious choice in this category thus far: Son of the Mask. Substituting Jim Carrey for..........Jamie Kennedy.

MIDNIGHT RUN from 1988 stars Robert Deniro as a bounty hunter. Then in the 90s, three made-for-TV sequels were released, with Deniro's role played by Christopher McDonald (Shooter McGavin from HAPPY GILMORE)!

The first Exorcist sequel that brought back Linda Blair and Max von Sydow, but also had both the writer and director refuse due to rights issues over the first, and Ellen Burstyn presumably told them to go to hell because they gave her a permanent back injury the first time and now they wanted to fire live locusts at her from an air cannon.

Smokey and the Bandit, got 2 with Burt. Then the third he is not there. But in the 90s there was 4 made for TV movies that while set in modern era are prequels and sequels to the trilogy. I am thinking it is Robbie Benson that plays the Bandit now. Was surprised when looking for a pack of the original trilogy and the current release includes the 4 made for TV movies. Watched the first one months ago and it is meh. Elizabeth Berkley plays the female lead and her acting in Showgirls was better and more believeable.

The 'American Pie' straight to DVD sequels had Eugene Levy (and a few other tertiary characters). In retrospect, it's a bid weird as Eugene has had the most successful career after those movies concluded. Hell, he had a more successful career before those movies started too.
For how popular the American Pie series was, no one really became a mega star from them. Sean William Scott did some cult classic films and Tara Reid was fairly popular for a hot minute, but that's really it

For real, I couldn't tell you a single thing Alyson Hannigan has done beyond American Pie and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

I never watched it and had no idea there was anyone on it besides NPH, so I guess that's more a "me being out of the loop" thing.

After being in more than 200 episodes of "How I Met Your Mother", she was the host on "Penn & Teller: Fool Us" for 7 seasons.

Not that I’m acknowledging they exist, but let’s just say Slap Shot 2 and Slap Shot 3….there’s a huge, huge chasm between Paul Newman and Stephan Baldwin and “Just make sure the cheque clears Leslie Neilson”. The Hansons had bit parts in the sequels, but….sigh.

He was just a background player, got the gig because he was playing IHL or AHL at the time, but there are autographed pictures of him with the Hanson's and him with Gordie Howe and Lanny McDonald hanging up at the bar here. Unfortunately, Terry passed about 10 years ago. Nice guy EDIT: Google tells me he was playing in the now defunct EHL for the Syracuse Blazers when he got the Slap Shot gig.

They were all pretty successful movies. John Cho went on to be fairly successful too--surprisingly, since his role in American Pie was basically to just say "milf" a few times. Not a megastar, but a recognisable name and he usually gives a solid performance.

Jingle All the Way getting a sequel 18 years after the fact that had Larry the Cable Guy, Brian Stepanek, and Santino Marella playing the Arnold Schwarzenegger, Phil Hartman, and Sinbad roles is the craziest one I can think of off the top of my head. I really like the first Jingle, I guess it has nostalgia since I saw it in theaters. I don't care for any action Arnold does but his comedy, I will always watch. I did see Jingle 2, at least half of it before having to leave home for the day. I thought it was pretty funny and Larry really does come off like a family member you would have that waits til the last minute to shop for the hottest toy. I had to check wikipedia for what happened at the end and it seems like a sweet ending. The worst one of these I’ve seen was the WWE produced Leprechaun film…until I watched Showgirls 2: Penny’s from Heaven. I actually watched the WWE Leprechaun film more than once. That’s the reason I have to admit Showgirls 2 is worse. I’m sure there are some set of circumstances where I would watch it again…but I’m having a hard time coming up with them. I can only recommend Showgirls 2 if you’re like me and seek out the truly worst stuff around. I’m not talking fun bad movies, like the original Showgirls. I’m talking movies that make you wish the process of filmmaking was never conceived. I got a Leprechaun DVD set of all the films. The first three I saw years ago and liked. But the fourth one, I think "In Space" was so horrible just in the first 15 minutes and I just stopped and didn't watch any others.

When word got out that American Reunion was getting made and almost the entire original cast was returning, I remember thinking how weird it was that of all of them, the MILF guy was the one most likely to be like "I'm too busy to participate".

Had a friend who was in American Pie: The Naked Mile (very minor character). Apparently they had been trying to turn it into a franchise similar to National Lampoons.
