I have to disagree. Somewhat violently, I might add. On a side note, I saw Genesis last Saturday and LOC was absolutely perfect. As was the rest of the gig for that matter. I'm with you on disagreeance, albeit minus the violence. That whole song is a protest song about policies that would lead to violence...with nuclear ends. Keep in mind, many of our friends aren't politicos who will understand what Genesis had in mind with this particular song...orthe anger in the voice of Phil Collins. A great tune, but thankfully, without breaking the rules here at the Crap, we can remind ourselves that the curtain has fallen and remember that not everyone is as well atuned to events from years ago as we are. I'll definitely give you that. In light of that, the song itself takes a much different meaning and, to some, any cover would be disrespectful to the events at hand. However... I'm strongly of the mind to say "Keep your politics out of my music"... where I just judge songs based on how they sound, regardless of the message behind it. Due to that, I really enjoyed the cover. Genesis's original is great... just, it doesn't get me pumped up.

Grand Funk Railroad's version of "Gimme Shelter" [Rolling Stones] is simply awesome. Check for the track on 1971 Live Tour
G'n'R brought life into Knocking at Heaven's Door
Lacuna Coil's "Enjoy the Silence" is great.

No mention of the world's greatest cover band: Me First and the Gimme Gimmes?

As others said... Johnny Cash - Hurt Manson - Personal Jesus GnR - Live And Let Die
Others... Lostprophets - Cry Me A River (Justin Timberlake) Metallica - Turn The Page (Bob Seger) Velvet Revolver - Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd, and mostly because of the guitar work) Good Charlotte - Back That A** Up (Juvenile, it's not actually GC, but the "pop-punk" cover is excellent) System Of A Down - The Metro (Berlin) System Of A Down - Shame On A N**** (Wu-Tang Clan) Mindless Self Indulgence - Bring The Pain (Wu-Tang Clan)

I guess I could fifth or sixth Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt, but Instead I'll say his cover of U2's 'One'.
Other covers I like more than the original: Metallica - Astronomy (Blue Oyster Cult) Devo - Head Like a Hole (NIN)
edit: oops! I'm a retard. I really meant to say NIN, honest.

I liked ELO's cover of Do Ya better than the Move's version.

For sheer comedy value, there's also Ben Folds "B****** aint S***" He slows the song down so much that it's just impossible not to enjoy it.

Fact: Ska band [spunge] is the only band to ever have officially been given permission by the Marley family to change the lyrics of 'No Woman, No Cry' for their cover version.

Carpathian Forest's version of The Cure's "A Forest". Not because Nattefrost's vocals compliment well and the fact that it deems the band to be Avant-Garde, but simply because the production is clearer and the atmosphere is more convincing.

Just about everything Metallica did on Garage Inc.
I hate Thin Lizzy but the Metallica version of Whiskey is brilliant.
And Tuesdays Gone and Turn The Page are brilliant.
Plus the White Zombie version of I'm Your Boogieman

Genesis's original is great... just, it doesn't get me pumped up. A good argument in return. I was a music major for a year here in Laramie...and when people are willing to hear a song for it's musicianship, regardless of the message, that's a great thing. Huzzah, sir! HUZZAH, I SAY! That being said, we've already broken this argument down to personal taste...and I have to say that the original is far superior to my ear. Whilst Disturbed did a fine cover, they really didn't improve on much, and given the motivation for the song, I'm still siding with Genesis on this one. But hey...if you need to get pumped up, check out that cover of the Zoo by Dickinson.

Tool "No Quarter". Better than the Led Zeppelin version by mere inches.

Now that I think of it.. I like C.O.O.'s version of Joy Division's "She's Lost Control". More guitar work makes That Loser Guy a very happy camper.

Disturbed's Version of Land of Confusion I'll say yes. As for the political content... well, watch the video and tell me it got lost. Todd McFarlane tees off on the military-industrial complex, very "Do the Evolution". (Yes, I compared Disturbed and Pearl Jam. Eat it.) For sheer comedy value, there's also Ben Folds "B****** aint S***" He slows the song down so much that it's just impossible not to enjoy it. MORE MORE MORE
