Some of you mentioned the Lacuna Coil rendition of "Enjoy The Silence" but I'm more partial to Failure's rendition of that tune.
Some other covers that I like that haven't been mentioned (or I might have overlooked):
99 Red Balloons done by Goldfinger Little Willy done by Poison Blue Monday done by Orgy Bring The Noise done by Anthrax Cat's In The Cradle done by Ugly Kid Joe You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) done by Dope Cat Scratch Fever done by Pantera It's The End Of The World As We Know It done by Pitbull Daycare No More Mr. Nice Guy done by Megadeth Solitary Man done by H.I.M. White Wedding done by The Murderdolls

Hendrix's version of All Along the Watchtower. That was my pick.

All of Hayseed Dixie's covers, especially Gin and Juice (Bluegrass version, come on!)
I also liked that lounge cover of The Sickness. That was brilliant.
But for the win?
Jeff Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." That's the version you hear nowadays, and to hear that whole song sends chills on your spine. He took that song, stripped and slowed it down, and made it his own.
Muse's cover of "Feelin' Good." That song needed guitars, it needed them and those bastards delivered.
I like Violent Femmes, but I think Gnarls Barkley's cover better. I guess just the songs and all that.

I don't know if it's better than the original, but I like Johnny Cash's version of "In My Life" by the Beatles. The fact that his wife had recently passed away added some emotional depth to the song, at least to my ears. I got kind of choked up the first time I heard it, especially thinking about the circumstances.

I dunno if it qualifies as a cover, but "Walk this Way" with Aerosmith kicks the crap out of the Run DMC version. Dunno if you meant what you implied there, but the Aerosmith version was the original. DMC covered it later. Most of the songs that were big at this time were either covers or covered by others. There were instances of four or five different musicians/bands/groups having the same song out all in the same year. Musical identity really only started to take hold in the later 1950s when performers started the trend to want to do more of their own material than do stuff that was already around.

In my life Personal Jesus(the piano in this song kicks 20 kinds of ass) Hurt Bridge over troubled water w/ Fiona Apple some others(I'll try and not repeat any ones) Ben Folds-"Video Killed the Radio Star"(The Buggles) Cake- "I will Survive"(Gloria Gayner) The Fugees-"No Woman, No Cry"(Bob Marley) The Pixies-"Winterlong"(Niel Young) Weezer-"Brown Eyed Girl"(Van Morrison)

Elton John - Pinball Wizard (The Who) Eric Clapton - I shot the sheriff (Bob Marley) William Shatner - Lucy in the sky with diamonds (Beatles) The Worst ever! - Winger - Purple Haze. what the hell !!! You ever hear Dave Mathews (I think it was him...might have been Jack Johnson) do All Along the Watchtower? THAT...is terrible. Mostly because he only plays the basic notes from the song, and the guitar from the Hendrix version is 95% of why that song kicks ass.

Actually I did...I could have sworn it was DMC, then they had that little duet video or whatever on MTV, which was when the Aerosmith one hit... ...oh well, its been awhile since ive been wrong. I guess I was due.

even though i haven't really ever liked her stuff that much, lily allen's cover of "oh my god" is surprisingly cool. and johnny cash turned "hurt" from just another NIN song, to one of the most powerful things i've ever heard.
