It's sad but true. Someone like Aretha Franklin could never have a mainstream music career nowadays, she would be considered too fat. There was a thread about Amy Winehouse recently, and some people were talking crap because they think she's ugly as if that has anything to do with music. Yes, but not only is she ugly, but, her music stinks (IMO). Therefore, my original statement on her stands. (Assuming I even RE'd that thread)

Time to drop THE bomb here...
QUEEN...
***ducks bricks and other heavy objects***
The band had so much more potential, but Freddy's antics went a bit over the top IMO. Still a lot of great songs, but the cult following (half of it is postumous though) and the iconic status annoy me to no end.
* Doors. Mystique and an aura of "poète maudit" granted Jim Morrison and his band immortality. Now he's the Poster Boy (and T-shirt boy, and Wallet-boy etc) of mediocre musicians who made it big BECAUSE they died before getting exposed for what they were. [see, Cobain, Kurt] Morrison's so called poetry makes me scratch my head, and the musicianship of the rest of the band is questionable... How Ray Manzarek can be regarded as a world class keyboard player is beyond me. Doors are decent background music while drunk. That's all.
* Nirvana. See my tirade on Morrison. Right time, right place, right thing. I'm still unimpressed and unconvinced about their real impact and innovation, but whatever...

Gonna have to go right ahead, without reading the rest of the thread yet, and say Pearl Jam. I loath them in ways that I reserve for very few bands. Vedder's voice alone would do it, but when you combine that with some of the most pretentious songwriting I've ever heard, it's far, far worse.
Second, any of the cookie-cutter girly-pop crap now. I'm sorry, you can't write a song to save your life, and when someone gives you something (even moronic and commercial though it may be), you can't sing it either. Remind me how the f***you have a job in the first place? Oh, right, those, yeah, they're nice, now use some of the money to take f***ing lessons, and then go away.
Dave Matthews Band. For much the same reason as Pearl Jam, Dave's voice just bothers me, a lot.
Grateful Dead. Look, I know they have a following, but when your claim to fame is being stalked by a battallion of stoners, maybe it's time for a new gig?
ICP. I don't know if it's the makeup, the idiotic lyrics, or this weird thing they have know where they're talking about the religious message they're trying to send through their music, but I honestly want to hurt both of them. Perferrably with something heavy.

How is ICP religious? Unless you consider the horror genre of movies a religion...

Nirvana - Nevermind People like to act like this is some master piece.. don;t get me wrong I LOVE nirvana I just think this is their weakest album & I believe Kurt knew this... which is why he designed In Utero the way he did. Everyone I see enjoying this album makes me want to scream at them and tell them how much better their live works are (see With The Lights Out). I`ll agree with on this one. I prefer In Utero, than Nevermind. That being said, I can sit down and enjoy Nevermind, but as far as production values goes, I say In Utero is much better than Nevermind

Silverchair - Diorama Powderfinger - Odyssey Number Five
These two albums may sound pretty obscure up there in the Northern Hemisphere. But down here you be called a poor excuse of an Australian (In fact I was dubbed that when I said Powderfinger are really overrated on the Triple J Message Board) if you do not own these two albums. The fact is albums may have high production values but they are mostly basic filler with no memorable songs.
The Offspring - Americana
I will say it here: I don't like the Offspring. I got this album for Christmas one year by a naive cousin. The album is basically a mess of over produced novelty songs.
Massive Attack - Blue Lines
I dunno. They say this album is an essential and a classic. The album is OK but not that great. I think 'Mezzanine' and '100th Window' are much better albums.
The Strokes - Is This It?
There was a huge buzz for this album when it came out. But what was it. Some basic sounding rock and lead singer who literally sounded like he was phoning it in.

I was once in the middle of a cnversation between two friends, and they started talking about Powderfinger. Well I shut up since I don't really care for them but they asked me about one of thier albums. Well, I didn't have a lot so say about them, and just said I wasn't really into their stuff. They looked at me like I'd just urinated on their Bhudda. I just don't really understand what makes them so great. But apparantly my opinion is crazy, and thus wrong. I'm also not too into My CHemical Romance's 'The Black Parade'. I'm also sick of people pushing me to like their stuff. It'll also make it a lot harder to ever try to get into them in the future. And I just don't like Fall Out Boy's stuff. I don't hate them like many people seem to, but no mater how many times I listen to them, it never changes my opinion on their music.

Glad I didn't have a mouthful of tasty beverage when I read that. The "battalion of stoners" line is gold. Jed Shaffer ~But they did do one good thing ... they inspired a decent ice cream flavor.

I totally agree with Green Day. I bought that album because I expected the songs that weren't commercially released to be somewhat up to the level of the singles. Unfortunately, not even all the singles are that good (Holiday, American Idiot), and I cannot stand most of the unreleased tracks.
And to add something, I will say Panic! At The Disco. Whenever I used to talk to a friend who was a fan, I would always point out how much their guy sounds like Fallout Boy, which was always vehemently denied. You take a listen (or don't) and you'll see. I got tired of their image around the second video, with all of their videos consisting of whimsical prancing about in circus outfits and vogue poses to the camera. Blargh.
Finally, I must speak on Metallica, whom I mark for. I agree with Jed's review of Kill 'Em All, but I do not agree with the post on the 3rd or 4th page of how Master of Puppets is bad. Personally, I tend to choose the Black Album, but I do acknowledge that musically, MOP is their best aside from Ride The Lightning. The only songs I don't like on MOP is Leper Messiah (which drags), and Damage Inc. (which sounds like a mis-mash of half-hearted sound). The title track is an amazing metal song, and Thing is far from their worst.
I do not approve of St. Anger, but I do approve of Load/Reload. And personally, I do agree with Lars.

I thought this was about albums people obsess about. I keep seeing a lot of albums that are generally excepted as being very crappy so I'm a bit confused.

The top 5 most overrated albums in existence, IMO, are...
1. Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon 2. Nirvana - Nevermind 3. Guns N'Roses - Appetite For Destruction 4. The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds 5. Led Zeppelin - IV
Now flame away.

Nirvana - 'Nevermind' (In Utero pisses all over it)
Radiohead - OK Computer (This has been voted best album ever a few times. Someone please explain why)
The Killers - Hot Fuss (I really love Sams Town but hated their first effort. It's music for beginners.)
Oasis - Heathen Chemistry (OUCH! What a f***ing terrible album)
A lot I would say have been covered, but these ones just get to me more.
