There are feelings of disillusionment, of betrayal, of disappointment, and of utter shock permeating amongst myself, my fellow crappers, and wrestling fans in general over the last couple of days. The sad facts of the tragedy involving the late Chris Benoit and his unfortunate family. It is hard to put to words the devastating effects of this sad situation. The George Reeves comparison hit things right on the head. In the eyes of wrestling fans, the image of Chris Benoit standing in the ring, confetti raining down, championship belt held high overhead was forever a testament to the rewards of hard work, persistence, and dedication. His close friendships with other wrestlers such as Dean Malenko, Chris Jericho, and Eddie Guerrero stood as touching example of the human nature of the men who we watch and cheer. However, this travesty has reminded us in more stark terms of the volatile quality of that human nature. Violence outside the ring is nothing new. The legal troubles of men like Jimmy Snuka and Steve Austin are well documented. And as heinous as such crimes as they committed are, no one has ever previously reached such dark depths of violence and outrage as the unfolding situation of Chris Benoit has. It has reached us all in a very personal way, to the point that we almost feel as if we have lost some of our faith in the rest of the world. The sad facts of this situation have opened our eyes, and then shadowed them over. I can but express my sincerest hope that we will all be able to banish this shadow away, and renew our faith in each other and in the men who we have so enjoyed watching entertain us for so long. In the end, I say God rest the souls of Chris Benoit's family. And may whatever personal demons haunted this man that compelled him to such a horrible action never fall upon anyone else. Amen. Proper words man, proper words.

It has been a long day and a half or so, but the realization of what happened is beginning to set in. I have come up with two scenarios in mind of what happened with this whole situation.
1. The Chris Benoit that killed his wife, son, then himself was in a altered state. Something happened, whether it be from drugs, alcohol, or any other vices that can affect your perception on what is going on. That, combined with the stresses of losing so many people weighing heavily on him, caused something to happen in his brain. The Chris Benoit that murdered his family then himself was not the same Chris Benoit that I met a few years ago. It wasn't the same man that had a warm and genuine way about him, a soft smile.
or
2. The person that we saw on tv and in person was a front. The man that was at home was a totally different person that only those close to Chris saw. A person that was mentally capable of commiting such a deplorable crime as murder. If this is the case, then should we not think that anyone we see or meet in life, real or otherwise, is capable of the same act?
Obviously, as a huge Benoit fan, I have a bias towards which of these I want to believe. I think over time, it will be shown which was the real person. I don't know which it will be, but I do know that its not fair to hate someone for what they do until you know everything about what they did. I'm not making an excuse for what happened, but until all the facts are known, I can't make a judgement of how I feel, other than that there's an innocent woman and child who were taken way too early, and another name to the list of wrestlers gone before their time.

Do they know if Carbon Monoxide was in Nancy and Daniels systems or has that been ruled out? Theres no price I wouldn't pay for that to be the true story.

WARNING SIGNS THAT SOMETHING WAS WRONG WITH CHRIS BENOIT By: Bob Ryder 6/26/2007 5:08:55 PM
In speaking with close friends and confidants of Chris Benoit contacted this afternoon, apparently there were some warning signs that something was wrong with Benoit.
Some of the information learned by 1Wrestling.com by colleagues and friends that did not want to be quoted:
"This wasn't roid rage, this was insanity. Roid rage doesn't last for 48 hours. There were signs that something was wrong. Stories have emerged that a year ago he became paranoid and believed he was being followed. He wouldn't let Nancy leave the house because he believed someone was out to get them."
“Chris hated religion. He didn't believe in it. I cannot comprehend him putting bibles by the bodies. I am shocked.” (Note: We have been contacted by other friends of Benoit who say he had recently become a religious person)
In addition, 1Wrestling has learned that sources close to Nancy are reporting that she had a safety deposit box with evidence of past rages and that authorities should check the box if anything ever happened to her.

See, I think a lot of people are just kind of sticking up for him and using the old religious "turn the other cheek" cliche on him because you liked him as a wrestler. If it had been some average shcmoe that did this, nobody would be saying "Oh we shouldn't hate him... etc etc etc". But I'm with bigstamp, Nancy and the kid were the REAL victims here. Absolutely mate. I think many of us wish it was a triple homicide or roid rage or whatever excuse to get away from the seemingly clear fact now that Benoit didn't do all this at the heat of the moment or was intoxicated. OVER A WEEKEND! What makes me sick is, I had posted this heart-warming memorial thread to Benoit at another website where I wrote my love letter to his great career. Now after learning that he killed his own family, I feel like such an accomplice of a lackey. I almost want to ralph. Dude, I did the same thing at my favorite sports blog right after I heard about Benoit and I feel like a total toolbag for it in light of the news that's come out. People need to get a grip. If that was your sister and nephew he killed and he wasn't your favorite wrestler you wouldn't be talking all this "Oh well don't hate him" stuff. Look, athletes get off easy with their fans for drug use and assault and lesser crimes (even rape) all the time. But there is no way we can just gloss over this one. What he did was despicable! It apparently took place over THREE DAYS. It was not roid rage or "heat of the moment" or whatever. If it had been, and he really was a good guy just having a bad moment that made a HUGE mistake, he would've turned himself in when he killed Nancy after his roid rage calmed down. But I agree that this is hard to take. Not only did we lose a great wrestler and his family, but we also lost his legacy. I mean before Chris left he took the respect we had for him with him. So unlike Owen and Eddie, we can't even really celebrate Benoit's life now. For some people, losing that legacy is hard to deal with so they go soft on him. I don't have that problem. Before this I always was a Benoit fan and stuck up for him, but I have no problem calling this like I see it. It is what it is, and in the end Chris Benoit was who he was I guess.

Yes its selfish, and its honest. Thats why I hate Benoit to hell. The monster killed his own family, and he made me and others feel like lackeys for ever praising his ring work...and his character. You understand betrayal? Why? Did his ring work get worse? He was a great, entertaining wrestler. His ring work should be praised. I would pose that question to myself if I were you. If you feel betrayed by this guy, who you didn't know on any personal level then you don't understand the word at all. You base your opinions of the man on a character he plays on TV, and when he isn't that man, he has stuck a knife in your back? I bet you cried for a week when you found out Gilligan was a pot head and lived in a land locked state huh? I'm sorry, i'm really not trying to be a dick here, but making this tragedy about you is really not cool. Fine, its not about me. With your logic, everyone here is being selfish. Whats with you? Yeah I am selfish with your logic. I'm sorry to be upset. I'm sorry that I cheered and supported (in DVD and T-shirt sales) for kid killer. I'm sorry that I feel guilty for putting him up as an example of "good" people in wrestling compared to say the Hogans or early 1990s Shawn Michaels or what not. I'm sorry for making a point.

I just want to say that I really admire how this forum has handled the entire situation. I've visited quite a few other forums in the past 24+ hours, and this one has by far been...well...proper? Anyways, I'm glad I'm a member here.

Losaphone, how could you been such a jerk about this? This thread is here for us to discuss this and if this is how rra feels, we shouldn't flame him. There's nothing wrong with it. Your holier than thou attitude isn't appreciated.

This will be my first and last post on Benoit and my last post for a very long time.
I've read a lot of sickening things on the internet. "Benoit should burn in hell" , "I hope he rots" things like that. Sure Benoit committed a heinous act. I'm not denying that nor am I defending it. But there was obviously something going on in his head that could cause him to do such a thing. Who are we to pass judgment on someone we didn't know. We weren't there, we weren't inside his head at the time.
People do snap and unfortunately some people can't control their actions. We should remember Chris for his legacy in the ring and not for what happened over one weekend.
With that being said. After about 20 years of watching and enjoying wrestling after the events recently I can not watch wrestling and legitimately enjoy it.
Wrestlers die all the time. I've become numb to it. But when it gets to the point where wrestlers are killing their wife and child and then themselves. Then the enjoyment is gone. I'm not saying never but for now I am retiring from being a wrestling fan.

I've seen a lot of people on message boards and such lately saying they hope Benoit is burning in hell now and I'd like to say something on that. If you believe in that, then I would think you would also know it's not your place to decide who ends up there. He'll end up exactly where he deserves to, which should be rather obvious based on what he's done, there's no need to be vindictive or anything.
As far as what happened, even now that more facts have come in I don't know how I feel. I doubt I'll ever know what exactly was going through his head at the time. Frankly I don't think I want to, I feel disgusted enough about this already. All the great matches he was in are still the same but I don't think I'll ever feel the same way watching them again.

The same thing thats with you and everyone else. I am lost. I feel like I woke up in an alternate reality. I am so crushed and furious. But I am not in the position to judge anyone. I refuse to tear the guy to shreds, because I am not his victim. Neither is anyone else here.
