Dixie Carter was on TNA Today this week discussing life in TNA. She said TNA was getting what it deserved going to two hours. I have no idea what to make of that statement. She put over the fans, which is completely understandable because the hardcore fans TNA has are the hardest hardcore fans I have ever seen, and that includes ECW. I mean, at least ECW was putting on a new, revolutionary product. . She said what they presented on Impact couldn't be found anywhere else. I agree. She said the two hour shows would allow for (write this down, by the way) longer matches and more character development. There just wasn't TIME for everything in 42 minutes. No idea why the 42 minutes TNA had every week was any different than the 42 minutes that countless other wrestling shows have had throughout history (including Raw and Nitro at the beginning) and still managed to be successful. She also plugged their upcoming Midway game, saying it would be the best FIGHTING GAME ever.
TNA is heading to Tel Aviv from November 15th through 17th.
The Women's Gauntlet Battle Royal deal at the PPV will be to crown the first-ever TNA Woman's Champion. They'd been talking about this for awhile, starting a full-fledged women's division when they got two hours. If Russo stays in charged, it's guaranteed a man holds the belt by this time next year, probably Eric Young in drag.
Big John Radocaj, 43, was found dead Friday of "blunt force trauma" at this home in Armstrong, MB. He got into wrestling after a gas station that he was working at was held up and a wrestling promoter saw the 6-9, 275-pound Radocaj on TV and told him to get into the business. He worked around Central Canada in the early 80s, then got into an early form of MMA (it was largely just US sumo) promoted by Walter Shefchyk in 1985. He was so big that guys couldn't force him out of the circle. His wife had gotten a restraining order against him in July and filed for divorce in August. Police are investigating the death as a homicide.
SLAM Wrestling also reports that Monty Black, another local Winnipeg wrestler, died a few weeks back at the age of 45.
The CMLL Anniversary Show, confirmed for September 28th, will air across Mexico on Sky PPV.
Mistico's big return on Sunday drew a disappointing 9,000 fans to Arena Mexico. It is believe that fans knew that nothing of major importance was going to happen on this show and it would just be a set-up for the Anniversary event on the 28th. And they were right. Mistico teamed with Atlantis in an incredible partners match to beat Dr. Wagner Jr. & Ultimo Guerrero. The story was that nobody could get along, so in fall three they all turned on Wagner, causing him to lose. So then after the match all three rudos attacked Mistico, tore up his mask and left him laying. Sucks to be him. Semi-main on the show saw Mascara Purpura beat Emilio Charles Jr. in a mask vs. hair match, so Emilio got shaved. Purpura, who is an American doing a lucha gimmick, is said to not be ready for this level and the fans found the match boring.
Latest ROH PPV taping took place in Chicago Ridge. Preshow matches saw Ernie Osirus & Silas Young beat Rhett Titus & Bobby Dempsey. During the PPV open with Claudio Castagnoli, Larry Sweeney and Nigel McGuinness cutting promos, a dude in a ski mask jumped the rail and grabbed the mic, but he was quickly tackled and taken out. Apparently there were about 20 guys in ski masks sitting there in the crowd. Sounds like a security breach to me. I realize that there are concerns in the world today about profiling, but personally, if I ran ROH I think there is a possibility that I would order an investigation into these men and have security keep a tight eye. Nigel won a four-way opener beating Chris Hero, Claudio and Naomichi Marufuji.
Rocky Romero beat Matt Cross with a kick to the head. Austin Aries beat Davey Richards. Davey has been heckled on a lot of shows recently for wrestling too much like Benoit, and at one point here he put on a crossface and a guy screamed, "GOOD NIGHT DANIEL!" Oh boy. Roderick Strong beat Erick Stevens with the Gibson driver. Bryan Danielson did, in fact, wrestle this evening while WEARING AN EYE PATCH. Awesome. Morishima beat him in 12:43 to retain the ROH title. Morishima tore the eye patch off and went to work on the eyeball with hard elbows. I realize the story makes sense, but I wouldn't have done that. Hopefully Danielson was smart enough to put the eyepatch over the good eye so he didn't endanger the bad one. Said to be very good, but the fans were very unhappy with the finish.
Danielson was the star of the show by a wide margin up to this point. Briscoes beat Kevin Steen & Generico in an insane ladder match to retain the tag belts. We got all sorts of reviews for this, some saying it was close to match of the year and others who thought it was too much. Finish was a problem as the belts were hung too tight and it took Jay almost a full minute to get them unhooked. Kind of killed the momentum. Fans chanted "SINCLAIR f***ED UP!", blaming the ref for putting them on too tight. Hey, better too tight then they fall off a dozen times like in TNA. And this can always be edited. Afterwards, Project 161 was revealed. It's a trio of Jimmy Jacobs, Tyler Black and the NECRO BUTCHER.
They beat the shit out of the Briscoes afterwards, then hung Jay upside down from the ceiling. He was bleeding buckets, so the heels stood underneath him to cut their promo while Jay bled all over them. Tyler was drenched, and Jacobs is a pro as he wore a white jacket. Promo may have went on too long as there were "BORING!" chants, which sounds impossible if you see photos of the aftermath. Apparently the company will not be airing this on PPV, saying it's too gruesome, but of course the footage will be available at ROHwrestling.com later this week. So yeah, this was the FIRST HALF of the show.
Then we got Mitch Franklin over Alex Payne to retain the Top of the Class student trophy, Daizee Haze & Amazing Kong beat Lacey & Sara Del Ray in a women's match, BJ Whitmer & Brent Albright beat Chasyn Rance & KENNY KING, who I hope is the same Kenny King I'm thinking of, off Tough Enough. Funny spot as King f***ed up a move and the fans chanted "FIP!", which is the name of the promotion Gabe books in Florida with lower-profile talent. Whitmer said afterwards that he was forming a group called HANGMEN THREE with Adam Pearce and Brent Albright. Crowd chanted "NO MORE FACTIONS!" Tyler Black NO CONTEST Jack Evans when Necro threw a chair at Jack in the middle of a move. This led to Irish Airborne & Evans vs. Black & Jacobs & Butcher, who are called THE AGE OF THE FALL.
Another no contest when Necro punched the ref. If the ROH fans hated the idea of Project 161 before, all the non-finishes will at the very least get heat. May not be good heat, but these fans are loyal and I can't fathom them getting turned off enough to stop attending shows. None of these matches could follow the ladder match spectacle, which begs the question why that didn't go on last. The answer is that Matt Sydal is going to WWE and they wanted to give him a nice send-off with one last match against Delirious. It was a nice idea, but the problem was they were also following the ladder spectacle, plus the match started approximately four hours after the first bell and people were burned out. Worse, Sydal suffered a concussion and it was rough going from then on. I should note that when writing about concussions, and saying that when someone suffers a concussion they should immediately go to the finish, sometimes that is easier said than done.
Apparently when Delirious figured out that Sydal was f***ed up he tried to take it home, but Sydal, who couldn't remember what he was supposed to do next, kept kicking out of things and refusing to submit. Delirious finally pinned him and Sydal, still messed up, went right to the back without giving any speech. Apparently he couldn’t remember any of the match that night or even the next day. Protect your head, kids.
One person in attendance wrote: "No matter what anyone says, the Briscoes match at ROH was total bullshit. I cannot count the number of times I saw a guy get smacked in the back of the head, full force, with a f***ing ladder. I basically couldn't enjoy the thing because I'd see some stupid highspot (like a Jay driller off a ladder THROUGH ANOTHER LADDER - and that was just one of about 15 spots so ridiculous that a normal person simply would never conceive of them in the first place) and all I'd think was, 'This man is going to be so f***ed up someday and he'll be lucky to live past 45. All for what, $500?' All the Benoit stuff has cast a really dark cloud over how I see this stuff now."
