Brainiac and Darkseid would both work as primary villains.

Well, Darkseid is... out there.
That might be a tad simplistic.

You mean "Apokalips," not that it helps. Then there's Granny Goodness and her Female Furies, the Parademons, Desaad, the New Gods, whew. Actually, Darkseid could work as a Superman villain if he is introduced in a New Gods movie. Imagine the potential if such a movie was a hit (also a very out there kind of movie) and then the same villain is cast for another film franchise.

"Apokalips" you mean. Meh. Whatever. We'll also never see Mongul or Warworld ever show up in a Superman movie, either.

I don't understand why a Superhero is only as good as his villian. IMHO, Lois and Clark did it best - we were interested in the actions of Kal El no matter who his enemy was - street thug, Lex Luthor or an alien.

Uh...if they are already accepting an alien from another planet who comes here to become a superhero who can fly, is invulnerable, etc...I doubt they'd have a hard time accepting him. We'd never see him because he isn't as well-know to non-comic people.

OTOH look at Batman Begins as it used Ras al-Ghul and the Scarecrow as its villains.

It's funny how general concensous can change how people think of something though. Batman Begins and Superman Returns both made about the same amount of money (infact world wide Superman made $20m more). Batman Begins is thought of as a success and WB was quick to green light The Dark Knight. Superman Returns is thought of as a disapointment and WB is hesitant on it. Superman did have a bigger budget, BUT a lot of it's budget was from the previous start and stops of making Superman movies (like Burton's, McG's, etc). This is just a comment on how perception can change things. Batman Begins got a very minimal advertising budget and didn't receive nearly the same level of hype Superman Returns did, in so far as the number of tie-ins with place like Burger King, etc. The performance of each at the Box Office over their run is kind of what sets them apart, despite ending close to each other's final take. SR had a solid opening week and then basically limped to the finish line, with some rumors about WB pulling some strings to get it to stay in some theaters to get it to a respectable $200 million cut-off (again, rumors, but the films takes for the final weeks were obscenely low). BB, on the other hand, had solid word of mouth and a very solid run even to the end, earning a lot of its money over time. The real difference came in rentals and people buying the movies for home use, as BB apparently dwarfed SR. Add in the fact there's a largely negative buzz against SR and the WB just watched Dark Knight break a lot of records, and its not really that surprising they want to move in another direction. I'm hoping they've learned their lessons with the line of failures prior to SR and don't repeat the process moving forwards. I think its less perception and more the reality that some $200 million is better than other $200 million.

Any one of Supermans lesser known villains could be awesome if whoever is writing it isn't a total hack.
Paul Dini for example can make any of Supermans foes awesome.

If they manage to do a Superman movie right, it will be better than Dark Knight but people won't say it is because it wouldn't be dark or 'thought provoking' enough.

I didn't hate Superman Returns. I just felt that so much more could have been done with the the character especially with what's going on in the world today. They really missed the boat with that film. Sure it made a lot of money but it could have be larger.
I don't think they need to make it darker but smart enough to get to the root of who Clark Kent/Superman is. Kids will love just because. There are a few villians to choose from if the can find the right on to convey the emotion needed to draw us in to the character.
I say leave Lex in but don't make him such a major character. Superman is a hero who saves the world when he's not protecting Metropolis while balancing a duel life. The movie should feel that way.
I hate that they have to reboot Superman like that cause they've already spoiled his return to the big screen. Now he has to live up to Batman's standards and I feel even if the movie is great that people won't admit it because of bias.
what would happen first:
John Cena the IWC Darling
OR
The Superman franchise getting the respect it deserves on film by todays standards.

I think a true "super fight" is what fans have been clamoring for for years.
