Can you think of any directors who had a great script idea in their hands but ultimately delivered a very disappointing end result?
Arguments that I've heard (while scaveging the Sitcoms Online message boards) so far: *"Natural Born Killers" - Oliver Stone
*"Halloween" - Rob Zombie
*"Superman Returns" - Bryan Singer
*"Star Trek: Nemesis" - Stuart Baird
*"Heaven's Gate" - Michael Cimino
*"X-Men: The Last Stand" - Brett Ratner

Steven Spielberg with A.I, why did you hand it over Kubrick? If the film had ended when robo-boy jumped out of the window, I would have liked it but the last half hour was nauseating.

*"Star Trek: Nemesis" - Stuart Baird Hmmmm, I can't remember, but I think I read something about the studio actually butchering a good chunk of his movie in post-production. Patrick Stewart seemed pretty annoyed by it too. It's a shame too, because Shinzon is such an underrated villain. I'm so, SO tempted to put Ronny Yu for Freddy vs. Jason, but a lot of that falls on whoever casted that movie. The Freddy and Jason stuff was fine, but for f***'s sake, is it THAT hard to find decent actors for horror movies? Same goes for you, SAW franchise. Oh, and Paul W.S. Anderson for AvP and the Strause guys for AvP 2. How the F***?! I didn't think the 2nd one could possibly be more disappointing than the first, but they proved me oh so very wrong. For the love of everything good and fluffy, they gave the goddamn Aliens shark teeth! Look out for the Xenomorph with the friggin hick mouth.

Sam Raimi - The entire Spider-man series.
We had potential for a line of fun entertaining movies but we got big-screen CW dramas instead.

Here's an obscure one: Joel Schumacher and "The Incredible Shrinking Woman." It was his first big-screen movie. Could've been a LOT better. Basically, about 2/3 of the way through, it degenerated from "ordinary woman has this terrible problem" into horrible slapstick with cops chasing a gorilla in and out of elevators.

Peter Segal on "Get Smart" Don't get me wrong, it was an awesome action movie, just, not so funny (Anne Hathaways Bethonged Backside FTW though )

TCM had a Spielberg special where he talked about A.I. and the criticism of the ending. He claimed that the ending was always how Kubrick intended it, but no one wants to hear that and everyone would rather believe that he destroyed Kubrick's vision (paraphrasing, but that's essentially what he said). I thought that the perfect ending would have been {Spoiler}
David at the bottom of the ocean, doomed to repeat his wish to the blue fairy until the end of time.

Sam Raimi - The entire Spider-man series. We had potential for a line of fun entertaining movies but we got big-screen CW dramas instead. See, I hate it when people say stuff like this. Its just like Transformers. The movies are made to make money, not pander to fanboys. They have to make something about the story that brings in the people that wouldn't normally come to movies such as Spiderman. If the whole movie is just one giant fight sequence, it will alienate people not really into the comic side. They put in romance and those storylines to pull in extra customers. Putting in a mix makes it a mass market appeal, thus making more money for the movie companies. Not saying i'm thrilled with it either, but I understand why. Might as well just submit to the fact.

I wasn't asking for a big mindless action movie genius, I was asking for something you know....Good. Not drawn out bullcrap that never gets going. Iron Man did what Spider-man should've done. Comic Book movies are supposed to be fun to watch, not a damn chore.

Agreed.
I understand that Raimi isn't blameable for ALL of it, but these bad enough to warrant my friend asking me if he made the Evil Dead movies good on accident.

in some of these cases, the directing isn't s bad as thw writing, so I don't know if anyone other then Raimi would have made a good Spidey 3 since the story itself sucked.

Micheal Bay should have not been able to make a movie about Pearl Harbor. Someone else should have done that movie.
Darn Michael Bay and his banal lines.

I always refer to A.I. as being one good director's good film being ruined by another good director's bad film

i LOVED freddy vs jason.....i just hate how there ALWAYS has to be the stoner dude or the drug scene (ie: freddy turns into a caterpillar and takes a bong hit)
I dont have a prob with the quality of actors in the freddy/jason frachise since its not like theyve ever had huge actors to begin with (aside from Depp in Nightmare1 from what i can recall)
and NBK was a terrible movie imo....tooooo long
