as for all the talk here about money, ironically enough baseball is one of the most balanced in terms of competition and ability to win titles.
This decade, 8 of the 9 years have had a different champion (Red Sox won twice) and they range from large markets to small markets. If you put together a team correctly, it doesn't matter if you spend $20M or $400M, you'll win.

Yeah, look at Boston. They spend money but they also have a really good farm system. That's the difference between Boston and New York.

I'm hearing the Red Sox as a possible destination. They've been looking over his medical records, and Boston, the Mets, and his hometown Tigers seem to be the favorites if he does leave Atlanta. I'd like him aboard with a Bartolo Colon-esque deal. Very incentive-based.

This is why I hate the Yankees. 10:57pm: Heyman says the Yankees' topped the Braves offer for Burnett by a few million dollars. He says the Yanks apparently will attempt to sign all three top free agent starters - C.C. Sabathia, Derek Lowe, and Burnett. And before anyone says "they have the resources to do it so they should," any success (which we all know is questionable) is based on them being richer, not better...and totally destroys anything close to competitive balance in MLB. Salary cap now, please. I'm not understanding any success is based on being richer rather than better. If they throw around money and it works out, that means the players are still playing well and doing their job, and if they're beating people, they're better. As we know, sometimes the big salaried players don't work out as hoped and then the team isn't any better. If you can sit and crow about the Yankees spending a smazillion dollars and it not working out as hoped meaning all the money spending doesn't make them better, then when it DOES work out, you have to admit the spending paid off and made them a better team. I think a salary cap is fine in terms of people getting 20 million a season being absurd, but to insist on a salary cap because a team who has the money to spend does so and gets the people they're gunning for isn't really fair. If a team has the money, they're totally entitled to spend it however they want, however absurdly they choose to do so.

The Mets have scheduled an afternoon meeting with agent Scott Boras, perhaps to discuss Derek Lowe and Oliver Perez.
ESPN.com believes that the proposed Rockies-Nationals trade fell apart Tuesday because one of the players failed his physical.
FOXSports.com's Ed Price believes the Diamondbacks are showing the most interest in acquiring Ty Wigginton from the Astros.
The Miami Herald adds the Rangers and Mariners to the list of teams to which the Marlins are shopping Jeremy Hermida.

I wish someone would inform Tom Hicks that baseball has no salary cap. Because he operates like there is one.
And it's apparently quite low.

The Yankees can go ahead and sign AJ Burnett and Derek Lowe. I can't for the life of me understand why either pitcher is considered to be "elite". Lowe relies on infield defense and Burnett is plagued with injuries. But hey, whatever makes the Yankees more of a hilarious failure is fine by me. Hilarious failure in December? I love it when people predetermine the future far too prematurely. Makes them look a bit silly when the result isn't what they want it to be. Yankees have added the fifth year for Burnett. In other news, they also offered a 3 year, 40 million dollar contract to Rick Vaughn.

He had foot surgery like 2 weeks ago.

That's a dumb offer from the Yankees. Vaughn is nothing without Jake Taylor behind the plate. They should bring him aboard as Wild Thing's personal catcher. 2 years, $16M.

Yankees have added the fifth year for Burnett. In other news, they also offered a 3 year, 40 million dollar contract to Rick Vaughn. Hank Steinbrenner announced that the Yankees will offer RHP Henry Rowengartner a six-year, $120 million contract. Yankees GM Brian Cashman has established concerns over Rowengartner's recent arm injuries and apparent off-field attitude problems, primarily related to early bedtimes and trouble in science class. Hank Steinbrenner announced that the Yankees have offered RHP Mel Clark a five-year, $100 million contract. However, there are some concerns over Clark's impressive season and rumors that his performance was enhanced by angels. Hank Steinbrenner announced that the Yankees will offer OF Air Bud a ten-year, $180 million contract. Again, Brian Cashman is concerned over the recent announcements that Air Bud is in fact, a dog, and cannot play baseball in the major leagues. Steinbrenner has said that he doesn't care about the recent scandal revolving around Air Bud humping the leg of his pitching coach, and has said that by signing Air Bud it has re-established "Yankee dominance in a Yankee Universe". This is fun AND strikingly realistic.

Did the Green Sox not get by their first two opponents by the slimmest of series margins or was that just me?

Okay good point. What about Air Bud? I thought he was only played Basketball, Football, and Soccer. Plus I heard he was currently under contract with the Knicks.
