I think its hard to define any era, especially one that is still going on. I think from 97 to 2002 was the Attitude Era. 2002 to 2004: Transition (?) 2005-Today: Cena Era That's what I'd probably say. 2002-2004 - rent-a-star era. the wwe had Hogan, The Outsiders, Scott Steiner, Goldberg, Brock, DDP, Curt Henning, Ric Flair, Bischoff, and others who were there for a short peroid of time.

when Vince had his head shaved bald is a large moment as well... this era never had a defining moment much like the Bret/HBK era never had one

I always think of the eras like this
pre Hogan = regional era Hogan win through WM 2 = transition era WM 2 through WM 8 = Hulkamania or Golden era WM 8 through KOR 93 = transition era KOR 93 through KOR 96 = New Generation era KOR 96 through SS 97 = transition / reality based era SS 97 through WM 17 = Attitide era WM 17 through WM 21 = transition / try anything / Ruthless Aggression era WM 21 through present = Modern era
Thats how I see it anyway

Cena winning the title at WrestleMania 21 was more responsible than anything else in shifting WWE into it's current incarnation.

I would go with Cena winning the title because he is the face of the business right now. It's kinda like when Hogan beat the Iron Sheik. That was one of the biggest moments of that era until he slamed Andre. I dont think the Benoit tragedy is a defining moment. It would be like saying what happend to Owen defined the attitude era. It was just a sad thing that happend it wasn't a defining moment. I think another argument could be when Cena started getting his push with the whole ruthless aggression angle. It was the very beggining of a new generation of superstars.

In alll honesty I'd say August 20, 2001. That's when Angle sprayed down Austin and the whole alliance with milk proclaiming the birth of milkamania. I think that's where the attitude era officially ended and this PG version of Raw began. The kids at that time should be mid-teens by now so hopefully that means they get the edge back again and cater towards them as teens now.

And: - Vince's Kiss My Ass segments including his bare ass - Kane's implied rape with Lita - Heidenrape - Triple H beats Ric Flair to a pulp on RAW Homecoming - Triple H beats William Regal to a bloody pulp in a hotel room - Live Sex Celebration - "Eddie's in HELL!" - Mickie James: Single White Female - Christian beats up Trish Stratus in the ring - And more recently. Chris Jericho punches Shawn Michaels' wife in the face.

Wrestlemania XI ended with a man winning his first match, then immediately retiring from wrestling, never to be seen in the ring again. Yeah that was totally stupid and went nowhere. That still means something, as it kept Stone Cold's legacy getting bigger. Blame it on Lesnar leaving. Hadn't he been such a dickhead, I guarantee you that particular match would have been THE defining moment of that era. And we wouldn't be having this very thread. I hated it, I found it pointless and redundant. But it still was something for the books, as Taker's streak and title list got a new chapter [the last one, if you will]. I'll give you WM XI, just because it didn't feature a title match. But all the others are still more defining.
