I think, because of the movie being released to everyone at separate dates, we shouldn't really go in depth(ie spoilers) until they are done with the tour at least.

no dates for canada. i hate all you americans. Co-sign. i just saw the trailer last night, and i really want to see this. I thought there was a showing in Toronto, and I know some "indy film" theatres are being persuaded to carry it, so I suggest you call/e-mail your local small screening room and see what you can do. I'll do some more research right now for Canadian dates. EDIT: OK, I kinda lied. There WAS a showing in Toronto, at the Toronto International Film Festival. My girlfriend saw it, and I hate her for it because she keeps teasing me about it (she's not a wrestling fan). She turned to me and said "there is no such promotion as Ring of Honor, is there?" Anyway, point being...maybe I was wrong about that. My suggestion of bugging local theatres still stands, though.

I think it is going to be extremely hard for this movie to win large awards due to its limited release...Without a nationwide release it will still remain relatively unknown...I have wrestling friends in this area who had never even heard of this before until I told them about it...even then it was hard to convince them that it was going to be "good" and not a mockery of the business...

I thought I post the trailer, for those who want to watch again or haven't seen it. This looks like a damn good movie. It's refreshing to see a movie that doesn't seem to be mocking the wrestling business.

It depends on where in KC. If it's at the AMC Oddesey in Gladstone (a 15 minute drive from my house) I am so seeing this. If it's somewhere out in Olathe or Blue Springs, then I'm out. Pretty much, if it's close enough for Blade Braxton to go see (as he lives on the other side of the KC area than I do), then it's too far from me...unless I'm underestimating how far Blade would go to see it. Yeah Olathe will most likely get it right after the New York and LA release because that is like the headquarters for all AMCs in the U.S. I use to work at the AMC in Independence, Missouri which is a suburb of KC and it sucks compared to the one in Olathe because it was one of the first megaplexes in the midwest built back in like 93 I believe so it is really old. The style and everything about the building still looks like early 90s bad neon color fashion.

Well technically a movie does not really need a national release to win movie of the year. The biggest thing this movie will be facing is all the other big drama movies coming out such as Changeling, Benjamin Button, Milk, and Frost/Nixon.(I hear the guy that plays Nixon is spot on) I think when it gets released in LA and New York they will decide how big of a release it will get. I think it will be popular just based off word of mouth really. If I remember right they didn't start promoting Juno real big last year until the end of December and it had the same distributor as The Wrestler. At first no one had even heard of Juno and all of a sudden it became huge out of no where and even won an Oscar so I'm guessing Wrestler has a mighty good shot.

more stuff from wrestlezone:
Actor Mickey Rourke, star of the much anticipated new film "The Wrestler," recently sat down with Newsday.com and had the following to say about meeting Roddy Piper. "He went on to pay us like highest compliments that we could wish for, And actually he got a little emotional about it. And it was kind of like, it was hard holding this guy and hearing him and talking back to him and understanding where he’s been " the journey that he’s been on and all the others that were like him. Because when your time has come and gone and that’s the only thing you know, you can’t go and be a godd--- bus boy somewhere. You just can’t do it. And the options aren’t a lot. And it’s not very pretty."
Rourke went on to discuss the training he did for the movie by saying "We had choreographed the wrestling matches pretty basically [with moves] that any half-assed athlete could do. And then what started to happen after about like two and a half months was, one of the guys was very gymnastically inclined. He, like, got bored and started doing these f---ing moves. And I thought, ‘Wow. Man, I want to do that.’ So I’d go in on Sundays with him alone and do it and not tell Darren (Aronofsky). And so what I said was, ‘I want to nail three or four f---ing moves that nobody could do.’

Alfonso Castillo of Newsday.com has just posted some highlights from a roundtable discussion he took part in with "The Wrestler" star Mickey Rourke. Here are some highlights:
On whether he tried to achieve the look of a certain wrestler:
“Yeah, like Lex Luger. And then when we Googled him, we were surprised to see how he ended up.”
On meeting Roddy Piper at a screening:
"He went on to pay us like highest compliments that we could wish for. And actually he got a little emotional about it. And it was kind of like, it was hard holding this guy and hearing him and talking back to him and understanding where he’s been – the journey that he’s been on and all the others that were like him. Because when your time has come and gone and that’s the only thing you know, you can’t go and be a godd--- bus boy somewhere. You just can’t do it. And the options aren’t a lot. And it’s not very pretty.”
On what wrestlers he became close with during the movie:
“Mainly, Dwayne Johnson’s uncle. His name is Afa. He was one of the Wild Samoans back in the 80s. And I talked to The Rock the other day I told him, ‘We’re sending you [the movie] and we want to hear what you have to say, too.’ And I didn’t know it was his uncle. All the Samoans say they’re related to each other. I thought when Afa’s going on about his ‘nephew,’ ‘Yeah, every Samoan is related to Dwayne Johnson.’ And they are related. And when he spoke very fondly of him, it was like, ‘Wow.’
On learning to wrestle:
"We had choreographed the wrestling matches pretty basically [with moves] that any half-assed athlete could do. And then what started to happen after about like two and a half months was, one of the guys was very gymnastically inclined. He, like, got bored and started doing these f---ing moves. And I thought, ‘Wow. Man, I want to do that.’ So I’d go in on Sundays with him alone and do it and not tell Darren. And so what I said was, ‘I want to nail three or four f---ing moves that nobody could do.’ And I got so hurt. I had three MRI’s in two months. I’ve never flipped over in my life – like done back flip and a scissors into the ring. And I couldn’t do it. Weeks would go by and I couldn’t do it. And then you finally… If you work hard enough at anything in your life, you’re going to f---ing do it.”
Rourke also talks about similarities between his life and that of his character in "The Wrestler," and his intense training regimen to look transform into a pro wrestler.

You've gotta admit, Rourke was very committed to this role. I mean come on, the script had him doing basic wrestling 101 moves at first, but once he saw the choreographer do some bad ass moves, he took the training needed to do those bad ass moves.
I think strongly think the only actor that could've pulled off the level of commitment that Rourke put in, and still come off as a believable down on his luck, past his prime 80s wrestler in the 2000s is Daniel Day Lewis, and the reason I say this is cause we've seen Lewis play plenty aging down on their luck guys, and knowing how Lewis gets into character, he probably would've became one hell of a ring worker.
