My Psycho I-IV boxset arrived in the post today! Can't wait to see IV again. I've only seen it once before years ago and remember how surprisingly good it was for a made for TV effort. I didn't even know they made a box set of the Psycho movies. I might have to pick that one up. Could be a different region box set. The UK has a Prom Night, Phantasm and Hellraiser box sets which are just awesome.

I already have Psycho II, III, and IV. I just need the first one (I've got it on tape, though).

The Final Destination poster That looks quite badass. If only it wasn't affiliated with a movie series I stopped caring about after seeing Part 2. *shrug*

Seeing as to how this one is in 3D though...that will at least be a cool 'gimmick' for this series. I'll be going to see it...mainly because I dig 3D cinema for the thrill ride it is, and secondly because this opens on the same date as Zombie's HALLOWEEN 2, and I want FD to bury Rob's film at the BO.

My Psycho I-IV boxset arrived in the post today! Can't wait to see IV again. I've only seen it once before years ago and remember how surprisingly good it was for a made for TV effort. I didn't even know they made a box set of the Psycho movies. I might have to pick that one up. Yeah, that's a region 2 box set. However, Universal did release a triple feature set featuring 2, 3, and 4, and if you don't already own the first film (and what self-respecting horror fan doesn't?), you can buy the two DVDs together on Amazon for quite a reasonable price. Also, the Prom Night box set can be purchased in region 1 off Amazon.ca, although I strongly suggest that you don't (hideous full frame transfers with no special features whatsoever). Speaking of DVDs, it's that time again. I have ordered even more DVDs for my collection after another payday from my online job (which basically comes in whenever I finish a particular assignment, and not on a weekly or bi-weekly basis like most jobs). I'm going to have to slow down soon due to the decreasing amount of space to store my DVDs in. But here goes: 1. Region free is the way to go, especially when you're a horror fan. I purchased the 2-disc special edition of Creepshow from Amazon UK, which boasts a far superior transfer to the 10-year-old(!) release currently available in North America, as well as *GASPSHOCK* EXTRAS! Who woulda thought? In addition, I purchased Anchor Bay's Region 1 special edition of the second film. 2. Despite having only seen the first film, I made a bold move and bought up the entire Phantasm series. Being region free allowed me to purchase the second film from Amazon UK, seeing as there is currently no North American release (and from the sounds of it, Universal has absolutely no intentions whatsoever of making one happen). Anyhow, here's hoping the sequels don't disappoint. 3. As unpopular as these films may be with some, I purchased Bride and Seed of Chucky to finish off my Child's Play collection. 4. Ordering Pet Sematary inspired me to go on a Stephen King-related buying spree, as I have now ordered Carrie and three non-horror King adaptions (The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption, and Stand By Me, for any curious parties). 5. I probably mentioned this before, but I'll mention it again. I ordered the Puppet Master box set, as well as the one sequel not contained in said set (The Legacy), and those should arrive in 2-3 weeks. The series is pretty low budget, cheesy, and not for everyone (the very definition of a cult series), but I enjoy them for what they are. Phew...that's it...for now. But wait! Don't go yet, I need some assistance from my fellow horror fans... Just the other day, I was leafing through my collection, and was trying to figure out if either I was missing either a) any notable series, or b) works from notable directors. And it hit me - I don't have any Argento in my collection! With my space rapidly decreasing with every purchase, I need at least one Argento film before I run out of space completely. I own the Masters of Horror Season One box set, which contains Jenifer, but I don't really count that as a feature-length film. I've been mulling it over, looking at Amazon, trying to decide which film I should go with. I was high on selecting Suspiria for a while, but when I heard that the audio on the DVD was remixed and manipulated in such a manner that it deviates from the film's original intentions, I wasn't so sure anymore. So, WC horror fans, help me out here. Which Argento film should I add to my collection?

The UK has a Prom Night, Phantasm and Hellraiser box sets which are just awesome. Yeah, it's R2. Pretty basic set but I've been wanting to get it for ages, just waited until the price was right. As for Final Destination, this is another series I like with an original concept. Parts 1 and 2 were excellent (seeing Sean William Scott play a nice guy nerd character was a bit strange at the time). Seen bits of part 3 but not all, hope to catch THE Final Destination in the cinema myself. Going to be controversial and say that I'd rather see H2 first just to see what RZ has done with it. The trailer is a bit all over the place, some bits look awesome, others look God awfuL!!

Good choice! Did you order the sphere box set? Because that is awesome. Now I enjoy parts 2 & 3, but 4 is odd in a David Lynch "What the hell is going on?" way. Did you order from fullmoondirect.com? Just a warning those guys take forever to ship packages. XD I believe it's mixed incorrectly on the three disc SE, but not sure. I used this site www.dvdcompare.net/ to check out other regions dvds to see what's a good choice. Now Suspiria is his most well known, but Inferno and Mother of Tears finish out his Mother Trilogy. Both, I feel, are good. Anchor Bay sells the Argento collection which contains: Tenebra(e), Phenoma, Trauma, Do you like Hitchcock?, and one I can't remember right now. You can get for around 35 dollars now. We maybe thinking of different box sets here. The one I have has Prom Night in WS and the rest of the films are in full frame. However, considering 3 and 4 were DTV then that isn't a biggie. Funny story about Prom Night 3. I was looking into this box set and found out prom night III is cut. So I actually ordered the prom night III uncut version from Australia as well. I just wanted to show how much of a loon I am for getting the complete version of films. XD Now from what I understand on the Prom Night release in the box set is it's a better transfer then the AB original release and much better then the canadian release, but not as good as the newly released american dvd. Prom Night II: Hello Mary Lou has also been released here, but not sure of it's quality.

Was in the mood for a good slow burn this morning after work, so I popped in an old favorite: Audition, a 1999 masterpiece directed by Takashi Miike. I've talked about it in bits and pieces here and there before, but suffice to say...this movie is incredible. It's very entertaining throughout its first half as it tells a pretty damn engaging love story between two lonely people, and the script does an excellent job building up both characters as sympathetic...and when this movie's final quarter rolls around, man, does it ever hit you in the balls. What a movie.
Presently, it ranks comfortably at #9 in my all-time favorite horror films.
I also have to state that THIS, I believe, is one movie that might be safe - at least I hope to GOD above that it is - from suffering a U.S. remake. I have never heard a word of any American director attempting it, and I for one am very thankful for that. Not because I don't think that this story could be made entertaining again, because I actually do think that it could, given that they find the right actors for the leads and don't settle for a couple lame flavors of the month. But, really, what's the point? I PRAY that no bright executive here in the States thinks that this movie can be "explored" some more, because this movie is absolutely PERFECT the way it is.
And you know, my favorite scene in the entire movie isn't the incredibly harrowing final twenty minutes, but the scene immediately before it, with Asami and Aoyoma sitting in the restaurant, and Asami giving Aoyoma her REAL life story. So simply staged, yet effective. With no exaggeration, this scene comes damn close to eliciting tears from yours truly every time I see it. The movie has just created this gut-wrenching sense of dread, and just before it hits you over the head with its real money scenes, it makes you identify with the monster in a real, emotional way, and not in the lazy, contrived way that Rob Zombie attempted with his remake of Halloween.
Lastly, I was hoping to see Drag Me to Hell today and thus have a review up sometime later tonight, but I'm just way too damn tired. If anybody else wants to take a stab at the review, I won't be hurt.

I never, ever want to see an american Battle Royale. Because I have a feeling they'll hire thirty year old actors as the teens and really toned down the plot and gore.

Good choice! Did you order the sphere box set? Because that is awesome. Now I enjoy parts 2 & 3, but 4 is odd in a David Lynch "What the hell is going on?" way. Nah, I got the Region 1 "Anchor Bay Collection" releases of 1, 3, and 4, because the transfers have been proven to be superior to their UK counterparts, and they have all the same extras. I'll admit the sphere box set looks cool as hell, though. Nope, Amazon.com. They're re-releasing the box set on June 9th. Besides, at least from what I can recall, Full Moon Direct charges insane amounts of money for international shipping (which would be required because I live in Canada). From what I'm aware, all DVD editions of Suspiria have the altered soundtrack. I've heard that most purists tend to make their own hybrids, with the audio from the laserdisc and the video from the DVD. I saw the box set, actually. I'm considering it. Yeah, that actually was the box set I was thinking of. I forgot it had the first film in widescreen. My mistake. I was aware that Prom Night III was cut on the American release, but was completely unaware that Australia had the uncut version. Now that I'm region free, I'll strongly consider importing it (I actually imported the R3 Remastered Director's Cut of Army of Darkness for similar reasons). The new American DVD, released by Echo Bridge, is indeed superior to any DVD out there. The only minor issue with it is the image "ghosting" that occurs due to it being a PAL sourced transfer. Also, the film runs shorter because they didn't bother to fix the PAL speed-up issue. Overall, though, I like it.

It's been a while since I've watched it, but as I recall Audition isn't a particularly gorey motion picture. It's just that one becomes so wrapped up in the lives of these characters that the finale packs a huge emotional wallop. Granted, there's definitely a sick, perverse quality to the events taking place. But I don't recall it being purely a blood and guts kind of affair. b.) Since you brought it up, I really dug Battle Royale. And I really hope they don't remake it, Audition, or a favorite horror/comedy of mine, Battlefield Baseball.

A pretty common thing that I've heard from people who DIDN'T like Audition is something in the vein of "Everybody told me it was so gory, but it's really tame!" Hey, if all you want to see is makeup effect intestines, go watch an Eli Roth movie - this movie is about the PEOPLE, and that's why it works. Yes, there is some stuff in Audition that really makes you cringe, but the amount of red stuff shown on the screen is, for the most part, kept to a minimum. This movie will, however, make your ankle hurt merely by thinking about it after you've seen it. ;D

Interestingly TR, I just cruised by RottenTomatos.com and looked at the ratings for DRAG ME TO HELL...and it's at 94% Fresh. However, one thing I'm noticing is that a lot of the reviews feel that they have to state that this is NOT a straight up horror movie...it's more of a slapstick, EVIL DEAD like campfest than an out and out bloodbath. One positive review even called it the "funniest film of 2009".
